I have never heard this version, but I like it. I thought only the Temptations did this one. But then again on the album "All Directions", The Temptations covered songs from other artists like Roberta Flack's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and Isaac Hayes' "Do Your Thing".
@fumetti I have only heard the 30 sec sample of Temptation's version, but that sounds very close to this. Yvonne Fair made a more energetic, incredibly funky version, and if any version blows the others away it must be that one IMHO. But nothing should ever "blow away" the original version, only complement it.
@thindude66 Edwin Starr did the original version in 1971 as a single; the Tempts did this as a remake...in fact, Poppa Was A Rolling Stone was a remake of the Undisputed Truth single.
this is a classic. It was on Gordy Records. I remember the song, they only played it on the Black Stations back then because "whitey" probably thought it was too black.
Love the harmonica.

Yvonne Fair also covered this track on her The Bitch Is Black.
I have to agree with tgibfo, this is the best version of the song, though Patti LaBelle did do a very good version of it.

@SlickFunker you never heard the Temptations version, which blows all the other versions away.

I've had The Temptations version for a long time, but I much prefer Edwin's version.
