  • Keaggy's great strength, I think, is his improvisational skills - he runs rings around the others this way; plus he only has 80% of a right hand. Muriel's fingerstyle is a pleasure, as well, as always.

  • Playing at the 2011 L.A. Guitar Festival...check out the video!

  • Mauriel Anderson is great no doubt but I just don't think Albeniz's Rumores is meant to be played with that much attack and aggressiveness... the tune is about water and needs more subtle touches like Chris Parkening gives it.

  • Sweet nice post!

  • Just fabulous,....thank you!

    FFD

  • I want to rip her clothes off, and steal her guitar:)

    sunaj

  • Wasn't much impressed with LJ. He always looks like he's holding most of the good stuff back, like he's afraid to play guitar naked in public.

Muriel and Phil show us all the goods. Words fail when they start to play.

    Muriel's smile is devastating.

And finally in the trio at the end, LJ starts turning the crank too. Awesome.

  • i like the way she changed albeniz's rumores de la caleta and mixed it with other wellknown spanish pieces

  • Wow! The Keaggy is awesome!

And so are the other 2

  • does anyone know the correct Tab? The only one i can find is in open-tuning whereas this is dadgbd. thanks

  • For Strawberry Fields the correct tab is in DADGAD. You can buy the tab annotated by LJ in "Laurence Juber The guitarist anthology Vol 1"

  • Will do. Thanks for the tip.

  • Any that deny God given talent......lean in......listen. I've seen him every appearance at creationfest. No doubt.

  • God given talent? You mean he never had to study? Never had to practice? He just woke up one day and God said, "hey.... you're a guitar player!"

  • There is a certain part that God expects us to do, and then there is a certain part that only God can do. Some people just naturally pick it up faster, better, easier. Talent. Hard work plus talent equals greatness.

  • @bonehead757

You have summed it up most eloquently. I think I may copy, paste and print that.

  • outstanding solo'ing by juber in the last song

  • juber was great. andersen is great too....did anyone listen to phil keaggy? man...how creative and original. what skills.

  • Whats great for me about Laurence Juber (apart from the exquisite musicianship and flawless technique!) is that his Beatles covers capture exactly what made the pieces great. The decoration, harmonies and dynamics are in a sense what we heard back then and he reminds us that we were right to be moved by the music.

  • couldn't be expressed any better

  • keaggy is one bad mofo!

  • Strawberry Fields Forever...

  • Yo Rolanddaily.. I don't know dude.. judging by your comments about Muriel, Edgar Cruz and others i figure you must be the most perfect fingerstyle/classical guitarists ever. Funny thing though.. i did a search on you and didn't find any of your vids. Each of these players bring their own style, creative work, sensitivity and imagination to the table. So lighten up will ya? So stop bashing and enjoy the music. Besides they're famous and your're not so they must be doing something right.

  • In response to Guitarman504: Just because you win a competition, it doesn't make you a great musician. Music is art, not sports, it is totally subjective. I love your example of Edgar Cruz, who produces a horrible sound on the nylon string guitar! You really need to listen to more fingerstyle/classical guitarists!

  • Muriels performance of the classical was ok. Tempos were rushed and she was sloppy, but I though it was ok. her day tripper was terrible, no groove. Strawberry fields was my pick on this vid.

  • I don't think it's possible to win the "National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship"(which she won in 1989) if you are a hack with sloppy hammer-ons and pull-offs. It has also been won by other "hacks" such as Michael Chapdelaine(in 1998) Edgar Cruz(2nd place in 1991).

  • c'mon.. Keaggy and Juber are both great in their own rights.

  • I agree!

    hb~

  • Muriel's performance eclipsed the other players. What we'd all give to have fingers like hers!! She gets such tone in her performance.

  • tebrikler...

  • so sexy

  • why did u cut keaggy short

  • look at the wind and the wheat

  • the only performance here that would sound as good in your living room, read w/o the effects, would be Muriel's ... Phil Keagy's solo perfomrmance sounded as much like a synth as an acoustic guitar .... not dissing anyone, they are all great guitarists. Different, not greater or lesser than. Anyone who really actually appreciates guitar understands that.

  • Juber doing a Musak version of Beatles music; sorry, but it's boring as hell.

  • well that's because can't hear how brilliantly it's performed. and they're all great! i bet you haven't even heard through the first one. i play guitar myself and i think this is a masterpiece. thanks to guitarsoul for uploading

  • I trust you noticed that in order to facilitate things,(lol) he is playing in Bb, in drop D tuning.LJ sure does find some music to play in that tune. Genius.

  • magical

  • keaggy is the guitar king!!!!!

  • undisputed.

  • Keaggy's one of my favourites

  • great! Laurence, MURIEL, & Phil !

  • I met Muriel at CAAS. I swear, she is so tiny she could fit in the case for her harp guitar. What's amazing is how she can reach such wide intervals with those tiny hands.

  • She's a magic woman!

    I just love her !

  • 3 people for daytripper? tommy emmanuel totally owns tt piece.

  • All three are so talented that

i wouldn`t be able to choose one

over the other. All three are winners.

  • Was this a contest?

  • No it wasn`t a contest.

I meant that all three are so great, i

wouldn`t be able to pick a favorite.

    IMO, the`re all winners(Masters)

  • gosh I love that warm tone she gets.

    very very nice.

    T.

  • they could have done without day tripper on the video, it should have just ended with keaggy...but i'll bet it was great to see it "live" with all three playing together

  • amazing

  • great sound!

  • Ha ha ha, STFU! Ha ha ha... Oh wait... you're serious. Scary.

  • Laurence Juber is my favorite - he's the only one of the 3 who played with any of the Beatles (with Paul in one of his Wings bands). I really like his version of Strawberry Fields. I wish all of them stuck with playing just Fab4 stuff. Daytripper was good too...

  • Phil really likes loop...

  • Wish I could have been there that night! 3 awesome guitarists! "Day Tripper" was really a treat. And there's just something about a good looking woman that can play a guitar like that. Look out Nancy Wilson, you might be coming in 2nd place on my fantasy list.

  • Phil stands out on these three for two reasons, one is because he has one less finger than both of them, the other is that with shades of green, the amount of skill was phenomenally greater to play not only because there was more finger picking, but also because the song went a little faster than most of the songs. It's funny that they all do Day Tripper and Tommy Emmanuel does that all by himself. 1) Tommy. 2) Al DiMeola 3) Phil Keaggy.

  • Dude - this isn't a race. These are all the greatest guitarists in the world! I wish had but 1/10th of the talent they do in their little pinky finger (right hand).

  • muriel anderson went to my high school! i've seen her a few times when shes in town cause shes around fairly often, and while a lot of her music i dont care for (some of the folky stuff on her cds) she is an absolutely amazing guitarist live, and is undoubtedly one of the best in the world

  • She is amazing. This was my first exposure to her playing.

  • Join the new Fingerstyle Guitar Club of Brooklyn: brooklynfingerstyle dot com

  • Could you please redo this vid, cutting out the boring blonde?? (LOL) Sorry, but I nodded off while she was on!! Keaggy MOST DEFINATELY RULES!! K.

  • You obviously have absolutely no clue what you are talking about. Write me back and correct me if can play what she did, like she did - then I will retract my statement. She was phenomenal! Phil Keaggy was (and is) a great guitarist. Keep in mind what that performance would have sounded like without the use of the sampler.

  • you have no clue what you're talking about rc. Phil Keaggy uses a looper, not a sampler, he does that so he can be a one-man-band, This is what makes him so much better than the other 2.

  • I disagree - the looper, which samples what he plays then loops it over and over does not make him a superior musician. It shows his ability to arrange parts and use technology. There are other guitarist who can put out that much music with only their hands and a guitar. Check out Joe Pass, Christopher Parkening, Tuck Andress, Reggie Wooten, the list goes on. Again, I'm not denying Keaggy's talent; I'd be a fool to do that - just don't put down Muriel Anderson without realistic perspective.

  • Oh my lord, PLEASE don't tell me your comparing Wooten to Keaggy?!?!?!?!?!

Bro, I live right outside of Nashville and have seen Wooten probably a hundred times. The guy is WAY over-rated not even close to the ballpark of Andress or Keaggy. Sloppy as hell and the worst tone in Nashville. Not to mention his tendency to overplay. That's why he's never held a big gig. Victor and Joseph are the real talents in th Wooten family.

  • j'ai toujours pensé que si dans le ciel il y a une place pour un guitariste , se serait phil keaggy !

  • Keaggy wakes up a party with his playing.

  • Muriel > Juber > Keaggy in this perfomance, imo. Refreshing to watch someone (Muriel) play great guitar without resorting to tricks, effects, percussion etc. Btw, watch Tommy Emmanuel playing Daytripper solo.

  • This is one of Keaggy's worst performances though, he IS the best guitar player out of those three.

  • Just great to watch (and listen) to. I always think its funny though when people involved with creating a video like this feel they have to cut away and do fancy video effects. I mean why in the world do a fade out AWAY from the fingers of someone like Phil Keaggy. Just keep the artist in the shot at all times. If you want to get fancy show us their FINGERS not them from a distance. I will shut up now and rewatch.

    thank you

  • AMAZING

  • Phil Keaggy is truely the most gifted guitarist in the world.

  • OMG no man... NO WAY... He is indeed very good, but NO WHERE near the best in the world.

  • Agreed!

  • Malaguenia (sp). 'Haven't heard that in a long time. Thanks, Muriel.

  • Don't know if its true or not but years ago I heard someone say that when Eddie Van Halen was asked who he admired as a guitar player, his response was Phil Keaggy because he does what he does with a handicap. Phil is missing a finger on his right hand.

  • Django Reinhardt. Also a huge guitarist who played with an even more severe "disability" with his left hand having been severely disfigured in a fire. Listen to anything of his that you can and imagine doing it with just a couple of fingers of the left hand available... Quite amazing as well!

  • These must be the top 3 guitarist in the world

  • Niceeeee

  • feaso and wildeyed, you're both right. The song she plays is Rumores de la Caleta (Malaguena). She definitely adds a lot of her own--especially to the beginning and end. Phil Keagy sure is using a lot of effects!

  • This was at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. I was there. It was an awesome performance by all three artists!

  • lazer613: You were at this concert too? So was I-brought my son there after hearing about it. Best guitar performance I've seen. It was in August 2005

  • Go Keaggy!

  • Amazing!!!

  • Well, bust my buttons ! These are all very good but Keaggy certainly stands out.

  • Now I think it is heavily based on the song "Rumores de la Caleta" by Isaac Albéniz, but she puts alot of her own stuff in it.

    Here's the sheetmusic:

    http://www.g7music.net/cgi-bin/show_score.pl?scoreid=72472

You need the sibelius plugin to view it.

I have a video of Rumores de la Caleta played by Micheal Chapdelaine in my videos, if you want to verify this.

    I am not Michael Chapdelaine.

  • I wish I saw this live. The guy who did strawberry fields was really good. That's a tough song to cover. "Shades of green" is just a beautiful song. I've been looking for this on napster to buy and i'm not having luck! I even tried limewire with no luck. Must be rare...

  • Laurence Juber, lead guitarist for Paul McCartney's Wings. Juber spent three years recording and touring with the band. During that time he won a Best Rock Instrumental GRAMMY® Award for the track "Rockestra" from the Wings album Back To The Egg.

  • its not asturias i dont know its name but it is not

  • that was amazing. i wish i would've been there to watch that

  • phil keaggy is amazing

  • "La malagueña", i think it...

  • No, it's a piece called Asturias by Isaac Albéniz. Malaguena sounds a tad similar at certain parts, but it's a different piece.

  • Actually, you might be right, it seems like she plays a lick from malaguena toward the end. Maybe it's both?

  • there is not a single passage (or anything close to it) from asturias in the piece she plays

  • ok fuck me lol i posted that b4 i heard the last passage which was basically taken right out of asturias, she does play it at an odd position on the fretboard tho

  • I do believe Muriel calls this one Spanish Improv (Maleguenas, Salerosa, Albeniz)
