As for the Holocaust, it was an ideological issue. Hitler believed the world needed to be purified, so he used the fit as slaves and killed the feeble. Take Stalingrad - when winter came and river froze it wasn't worth much as a tactical position and it would have made sense to pull back but Hitler and Stalin continued the bloodiest battle in history there for the sake of pride.
