they are not basing there hair on any anime characters. I live in japan those arnt even the really crazy ones those are just easy pics to find. Anime i found out it mostly based around there actions and hair. w1ng15 i am also canto.. I USE TO HAVE EXACT PROBLEM AS U!! Not anymore tho xD Heres my advice:

1. use "Fudge Hair Shaper" (google it). It gives a natural effect on ur hair (whilst summink like gel gives a wet look). It also has a strong hol.

2.use hairspray after using "fudge hair shaper"!

3.if both of the above fails, then go to hairdressers and get ur hair layered and thinned. this helps... ALOT!

4.look at vids on utube which show u how to create an "asian hairstyle" for tips
