  • Sunday Morning by Maroon 5 uses a ii V I progression for those who want to know how this can be used in things other than jazz

  • very nice video thanks

  • great

  • Really helpful and good Video, as pknox said, really appreciate it ;)

  • sounds good what kind of amp you use

  • I learned a lot more from your videos than the many so called jazz books for beginners which require you to memorize a zillion chords. You should consider putting out a beginners Jazz guitar book yourself - you're an excellent teacher.

  • audio is kinda bad...what happed? loved the other postings, very informative!

  • dude, seriously? You are awesome, I could play anything but jazz, untill I came across your video, I have no words good enough for you man, GENIUS

  • speaking volume??

  • Excellent! So that's how they do it! Woohoo - after years and years of trying I can actually do this now!!!! I am going to enjoy my guitar so much more - you are an excellent teacher. Good pace and not too presumtious of what you think your audience already kows and you are willing to let the noob into the jazz-guitar gang without needing a bachelor in advanced Jazz theory or something. Thank you very much!

  • good ole Ionian

  • Finally, someone willing to teach on my level! Thank you!!!

  • Let's hear yours then?

  • You really packed that little lesson, densely, with good info.

I was a piano player for 30 years, but I started getting interested in seeing how much guitar I could learn (2 years ago) in my spare time and how much know-how I could bring to it.

Guitar was my first choice as a little kid, but I just didn't get the right kind of start and help with it, but now I'm having some fun, and you just laid some nice, smooth, solid tracks out before me. Thanks!

  • Thanx man, very helpful

  • love your style, your instructions are the best...nice job.

  • this is a really good video bro..

    nice nice

  • bro........

  • very nice keep it slow so its easier to play thank you

  • Hi, what make is your guitar? the sound is really groovy

  • i'm 99.999% sure this is an ibanez artcore af86 (also known as ibanez artcore af86-vls, or af86vls, etc.)

  • awesome vid man, thanks alot

  • nice thanks alot, really good vid :)

  • is that an ibanez artcore?

  • nice nice

  • very simple but very nice, very well explained = me very happy and very thankful. i knew all this stuff already but now you've got me doin it proper!!! good on ya bro!!! thanks

  • Great!

    Beautiful guitar too.

I've added it to my Jazz Guitar Playlist.

    Five Stars!

    Keep up the good work!

  • This is great. I've been playing rock/pentatonic style for 15 years and really want to get into Jazz guitar but could never really get my head around it. This lesson was great and I have it sounding decent. Thanks a lot for posting this.

  • beautiful, beautiful lesson. learned more in this 10 mins than I did in probably an hour of other vid's. thanks man. sweet sounding guitar too.

  • thanks man, good ideas to work with

  • beautiful

  • I played that guitar and that is the best jazz guitar I have ever played for a price so cheap! Scale is long in length, bright tone that goes great with flat-wound strings, and the sustain is incredible. Ibanez, you're my best friend.

  • Grat Lesson Man, THe thing is that I cant understand a word you're saying... But again very great vid...

  • nice chords there bro ty

  • Thanks for posting this lesson! no se mucho ingles, asi que si consigues alguien que te traduzca esto mejor!

es muy facil de seguir la leccion, y suena muy bien.

gracias, sigo mirando tus videos desde Argentina.

  • Haaaaaha... Thank you brother; I love it. Figuring everything out, on your own, just takes up so much time. Nice job.

  • Nice post!!! Thanks

  • word... thanks

  • thanks for posting...

  • great lesson. and that is an ibanez artcore guitar.

  • Great lesson! Thanks for posting

  • Nice sound. What kinda guitar is that?

  • That was cool man. I always wanted to learn something jazzy. I know my seven major modes...Do they come into play here? I think "Dorian" is used in jazz. Is there special jazz scales to learn?

Give me a line if you get time

    Cheers

  • hi... learn your modes

  • not bad man!!! alot of lessons on here are good....but then again some of them are made by idiots who dont know whats what. this lesson is not one of them. keep the good vids coming.

  • excellent, introduction for impro

  • Very helpful thank you - I'll be sure to have a look through the rest.

  • your chord progression is just begging for an Fm at the end haha..

  • thanks man...u are a great jazz teacher...

    thanks 4 sharing ur talents...

i hope you will not b tired of sharing your knowledge in playing guitar...

  • that was a very enjoyable experiance, this is all life should be u kno?, a little slice of peace at a time.. i thank u sir

  • Thank you for taking the time and expense to share your knowledge with us.

I played bass for years and always wanted to try guitar.

What you are sharing is much appreciated Thanks!!

  • thanks man this was helpful.

  • any of you jazz folks, need help.

    whats this:

    C D E G A

It's not C11 or 13 or nothing like that. it's got 2nd and 6th, but what's the name of chord with a 2nd and 6th in it?????

Easier way to ask. what's the name of a chord if it has

    1) 2nd and 6th in it

    2) 2nd and 7th

    3) 2nd and 4th(suspended)

I mean if you're playing a regular 6th, 7th, and suspended one but you're adding 2nd throughout, what's the name of those things?

    Do you just say: C6add2, C7add2, Csus4add2???

  • The chord is C6/9 (if C is the root). 2nd and 6th on top of a major triad give 6/9 (the 2nd is called a 9). 2nd and 7th would give you a major 9th chord (the 5th is usually left out). The last one I would call a sus 4 add9. Generally speaking, a chord is only a 'sus' chord if the 3rd is left out. If the 3rd is present, it tends to be called 'add 9' (instead of sus 2) and add 11 (instead of sus 4).

    Hope that helps.

  • thanks. well done. you're right 9th is 2nd. aha!

except that if you say C6/9 then it's assumed, i guess, that the 9th is just a 9th note, not a 9th chord. cause C9, as you say, assumes 9th and minor 7th, which is a freaky convention but i get that one.

but yeah thanks. i completely forgot that 2nd is the 9th.

  • Yes, you're right. C6/9 belongs to the major family of chords, so the 9 refers to the note alone. C9 belongs to a different chord family - the dominant. Dominant chords such as 9th, 11th, 13th all have a flat 7th. That's what distinguishes a chord like Cadd9 (CEGD) from C9 (CEGBbD).

Incidentally, C6/9 is often written with the 6 floating above the 9 rather than the numbers being divided by a slash. Unfortunately, I can't show that in this font.

  • good job. yeah, well explained. yes, ive seen the numbers written on top of each other instead of a /. / is usually used for different bass i think. like D/F# or something with F# in the bass.

i appreciate your help though. i had no idea what i'm playing here.

  • true..But he's good.

  • Thanks for a great lesson .... breaking it down to the basics and then leading us thru it.

How about some more basic jazz for dummies lessons ?

  • What scale is that?

  • Dude whats up with shooting your vids in NIght MOde? Do you play better in the darkl or sumfing?..lol...Anyway your awesome! You RAWK!

  • yeah sorry!! it wasnt in night mode My friend just has no clue when it comes to modern tech...!!!

  • Dude whats up with shooting your vids in NIght MOde? Do you play better in the darkl or sumfing?..lol...Anyway your awesome! You RAWK!

  • Very, very good lesson *subscribe* i think that this was just what I needed. You are a good teacher.

  • thats a realy helpful video man, i been wanting to learn jazz for some time . your vid is the 1st ive seen that actuly helped me understand the chord and scale progressions, thankyou !

  • Let me just say, you really are a great teacher, everything is laid out perfectly in this video, I have been going thru it for about 2 hours now, and when I first saw you playing I wished I could play anything close to that, but since I've been learning how to switch from the chords to the scales which you taught and I am really getting a great feel for the melodic sound!! THANK YOU SOO MUCH!

  • Totally awesome. Best video I've seen on the subject. Sound quality could be improved. 5 Stars

  • if you can't hear him grab some head phones cause its worth hearing.... thanks for the vid. you gave me some good new ideas. cheers

  • great lesson man i've realy wanted to learn jazz. thanks

  • great lesson, thanks alot for sharing your knowledge

  • is every note in this video diatonic in the single key of Ab? i didn't know such jazz sounds can be achieved staying within diatonic major scale.

  • excellent playing,..../great guitar?/help my get some free notes, maby some webs for free notes

  • thanks! now this is a start! I really wanted to know jazz a lot

  • this is great man, my only advice to make this that much better is to maybe write a tab to just have something to look at when ur following along. but very nice job

  • Loved your video. Some of those chords and styles reminds me a lot of Wes Montgomery. Thanks for the insight and ideas.

  • wow.

  • Excellent, thanks for your patient thoughtfulness, you layed it out perfectly. I've been beating out scales to death without any concept on what to do with them, hey bro this is it, I can jam with this approach.

  • great

    nice explaining

    very thorough and helpful

  • great!!!!

  • really inspiring and smooth.

please post some more clips and lessons!

  • Exellent. You have a nice way of explaning things!

  • Need to either sit closer to the mic or turn the guitar down, because when I turn up the sound to hear you, the guitar is FAR too loud. Thanks!

  • Yo amazing vid now in my favorites, really like the way you explain things. Skip string trick showing the chord on a diagram awesome.

  • Cool Thanks lots

  • Thanks for your selfless and thorough instruction of such beautiful jazz music played by guitar.

  • Thanks!! It's really work and the sound is cool!!!

  • great lesson dude, im going to school for music and trying to get better at jazz playing. Hope to see more from you!

  • Hey man, I´ve found, by myself, this way of using the high three strings to make a statement, very similar of what you do at 07:00. I´ve tried to go all way through the neck and it became a speed race, not creating melodies.

  • explained really well

  • nicely explained...many thanks

  • i love playing the jazz guitar, even though i'm self taught. thank you and God bless you for helping me to give all these boys a run for their money!:)

  • Thanks for this - I actually just bought this guitar yesterday and was looking for some intro to jazz lessons online - this really helped as I am used to blues scales and never knew when to apply the major scales like you just demonstrated. Your other videos are great as well, thanks.

  • you are so awesome dude So many ppl get on here tryin to show off but you can tell all you want to do is help out. I really appreciate your help man

  • Thanks thats an awesome compliment. I would like to do another video soon, but man am I busy since school started..thanks for watching

  • I really think you did a wonderful job! It's hard to find a good teacher as well as one who can make Jazz guitar look simple! I also like how you explained HOW to combine the chords with appropriate phrasing dependent upon their registers... that was key to me. Thanks a lot!

  • yep, thats an 86. there sweet huh. I swapped out the factory bridge for a rosewood and strung it with .12 flatwounds. Sings nicley

  • Great stuff! And I think we have the exact same guitar! Is that the AF-85?

  • AF-86... typo

  • you are cool man..

  • thanks. will practice and do best. You make seem simple. enjoy your vids. studied spanish guitar as well. the scale there was the first I learned so, it wasn't too hard to get a feel.

  • This is a good start for beginers but having said that u have to learn what is being done theoretically aswell.

This is a 2,5,1 in Aflat major and what that means is that he is playing the chord of 2 from the scale followed by the chord of 5 and then by the chord of 1.

All the notes in the A flat major scale will work over these chords(as explained by illdoitagain) but after u learn the scale it does not mean u are free to just play the scale as u please(also explained).

  • As Strangeone says, Each chord has a series of notes that will really bring out the sound of the chord. The scale will only get you so far..a combination of arpeggios and scale notes is the next challenge for this lesson. I should have it up soon. Thanks Strangeone.

  • To become a good Jazz player u must know the notes that relate to the chord within the scale as u are playing and not simply just be playing in a "key" this is crucial because u will only get so far by playing in a "key"

Learn how to play this piece but more importantly learn how to understand how it works. That will stand to u in the long run and u will become a good player of the guitar

Good lesson illdoit keep spreadin' the message of Jazz

  • my email is schnider_17 @ yahoo . com

  • pls send me tabs! you-re very good. and i wanna learn jazz.

  • A+ !!!

  • I got to give you an A+ in your teaching and musical style,I appreciate your time and effort, good job..

    will you do another one

  • men i love ur lessons, very clear, thx dude!

hey, by the way...would u please send me that paper with all the jazz chords cause im having problems with some chords so if u can help...arielquepo89hotmailcom

    great lessons......

  • Thanks, I'll send you a chord diagram that may clear some things up for you. If anyone else needs it please let me know

  • please send me a chord diagram whenever you get a chance. Your very good with detailed instruction although I can here your voice faintly

  • I'll have that out to you soon, Please give me an email address that supports attachments. Just message me from my channel page

  • great lesson my friend...very clear/concise thanks!

  • thanks, very helpful

  • isnt that a minor 9?

  • I may have played a minor9, but wrote it as a 7th. I have a tendency to decorate chords without thinking about it. either one will work

  • Wtf my chord chart says Bbm7 is wayyyy different Grr why is music so difficult to understand

  • A given chord can be played in hundreds of different positions. begin to think of chords according to their root note position. here , the chords all have their root note in the bass E. Hang in there. a great book to learn from is called beginning jazz guitar by Jody fisher. good luck

  • very good . hope see more

  • great lesson man, learnt some kool stuff! Look forward to more vids! Thanks

  • Great lesson! Thanks very much. It will get folks started at improvising and that is the weak point of most systems.... too much theory and no simple practical guidance to start PLAYING. Well done.

  • good basic lesson. Not too much help in playing non diatonic or advanced jazz though, but important to know. I look forward to seeing more lessons from you. btw, I'm pretty sure tha Bbm chord was a Bbm9 chord ;)

  • That may have been a Bbm9. I'm notorious for decorating chords and not thinking anything of it. who can keep all these chords straight anyway.

  • fantastic lesson. thanks a lot.

  • THANKS!! MORE MORE!! B) I been practing this all week, Its really helping bunch!

  • thanks a lot! very inspiring

  • loved it thanxz

  • Im just now trying to broaden my horizons and play some jazz, and this was a great lesson to get me started fast. Thanks alot and best of luck. Oh by the way what model is your guitar? And what amp are you using?

  • good lesson.... Great Tone. what gear are you using?

  • ten stars lessons. you put your heart into it and you showed that you really want us to learn, unlike a lot of these players on here. thank you, please keep posting.

  • Nice

  • This is really good. Without mentioning "diatonic", ii/V/I, intervals, or even the names of the notes, you've created an effective way to start making music... good work!

  • Gr8 lesson, nice sweet sound. I'm just a beginner so watching the scales is a huge help. Thanks
