I learned a lot more from your videos than the many so called jazz books for beginners which require you to memorize a zillion chords. You should consider putting out a beginners Jazz guitar book yourself - you're an excellent teacher.
Excellent! So that's how they do it! Woohoo - after years and years of trying I can actually do this now!!!! I am going to enjoy my guitar so much more - you are an excellent teacher. Good pace and not too presumtious of what you think your audience already kows and you are willing to let the noob into the jazz-guitar gang without needing a bachelor in advanced Jazz theory or something. Thank you very much!
You really packed that little lesson, densely, with good info.
I was a piano player for 30 years, but I started getting interested in seeing how much guitar I could learn (2 years ago) in my spare time and how much know-how I could bring to it.
Guitar was my first choice as a little kid, but I just didn't get the right kind of start and help with it, but now I'm having some fun, and you just laid some nice, smooth, solid tracks out before me. Thanks!
very simple but very nice, very well explained = me very happy and very thankful. i knew all this stuff already but now you've got me doin it proper!!! good on ya bro!!! thanks
This is great. I've been playing rock/pentatonic style for 15 years and really want to get into Jazz guitar but could never really get my head around it. This lesson was great and I have it sounding decent. Thanks a lot for posting this.
I played that guitar and that is the best jazz guitar I have ever played for a price so cheap! Scale is long in length, bright tone that goes great with flat-wound strings, and the sustain is incredible. Ibanez, you're my best friend.
That was cool man. I always wanted to learn something jazzy. I know my seven major modes...Do they come into play here? I think "Dorian" is used in jazz. Is there special jazz scales to learn?
not bad man!!! alot of lessons on here are good....but then again some of them are made by idiots who dont know whats what. this lesson is not one of them. keep the good vids coming.
The chord is C6/9 (if C is the root). 2nd and 6th on top of a major triad give 6/9 (the 2nd is called a 9). 2nd and 7th would give you a major 9th chord (the 5th is usually left out). The last one I would call a sus 4 add9. Generally speaking, a chord is only a 'sus' chord if the 3rd is left out. If the 3rd is present, it tends to be called 'add 9' (instead of sus 2) and add 11 (instead of sus 4).
except that if you say C6/9 then it's assumed, i guess, that the 9th is just a 9th note, not a 9th chord. cause C9, as you say, assumes 9th and minor 7th, which is a freaky convention but i get that one.
but yeah thanks. i completely forgot that 2nd is the 9th.
Yes, you're right. C6/9 belongs to the major family of chords, so the 9 refers to the note alone. C9 belongs to a different chord family - the dominant. Dominant chords such as 9th, 11th, 13th all have a flat 7th. That's what distinguishes a chord like Cadd9 (CEGD) from C9 (CEGBbD).
Incidentally, C6/9 is often written with the 6 floating above the 9 rather than the numbers being divided by a slash. Unfortunately, I can't show that in this font.
good job. yeah, well explained. yes, ive seen the numbers written on top of each other instead of a /. / is usually used for different bass i think. like D/F# or something with F# in the bass.
i appreciate your help though. i had no idea what i'm playing here.

Excellent, thanks for your patient thoughtfulness, you layed it out perfectly. I've been beating out scales to death without any concept on what to do with them, hey bro this is it, I can jam with this approach.
Hey man, I´ve found, by myself, this way of using the high three strings to make a statement, very similar of what you do at 07:00. I´ve tried to go all way through the neck and it became a speed race, not creating melodies.
i love playing the jazz guitar, even though i'm self taught. thank you and God bless you for helping me to give all these boys a run for their money!:)
Thanks for this - I actually just bought this guitar yesterday and was looking for some intro to jazz lessons online - this really helped as I am used to blues scales and never knew when to apply the major scales like you just demonstrated. Your other videos are great as well, thanks.
I really think you did a wonderful job! It's hard to find a good teacher as well as one who can make Jazz guitar look simple! I also like how you explained HOW to combine the chords with appropriate phrasing dependent upon their registers... that was key to me. Thanks a lot!
thanks. will practice and do best. You make seem simple. enjoy your vids. studied spanish guitar as well. the scale there was the first I learned so, it wasn't too hard to get a feel.
This is a good start for beginers but having said that u have to learn what is being done theoretically aswell.
This is a 2,5,1 in Aflat major and what that means is that he is playing the chord of 2 from the scale followed by the chord of 5 and then by the chord of 1.
All the notes in the A flat major scale will work over these chords(as explained by illdoitagain) but after u learn the scale it does not mean u are free to just play the scale as u please(also explained).
As Strangeone says, Each chord has a series of notes that will really bring out the sound of the chord. The scale will only get you so far..a combination of arpeggios and scale notes is the next challenge for this lesson. I should have it up soon. Thanks Strangeone.
To become a good Jazz player u must know the notes that relate to the chord within the scale as u are playing and not simply just be playing in a "key" this is crucial because u will only get so far by playing in a "key"
Learn how to play this piece but more importantly learn how to understand how it works. That will stand to u in the long run and u will become a good player of the guitar
Good lesson illdoit keep spreadin' the message of Jazz

any of you jazz folks, need help.
whats this:
C D E G A
It's not C11 or 13 or nothing like that. it's got 2nd and 6th, but what's the name of chord with a 2nd and 6th in it?????
Easier way to ask. what's the name of a chord if it has
1) 2nd and 6th in it
2) 2nd and 7th
3) 2nd and 4th(suspended)
I mean if you're playing a regular 6th, 7th, and suspended one but you're adding 2nd throughout, what's the name of those things?
Do you just say: C6add2, C7add2, Csus4add2???
tubelogin1 3 years ago
The chord is C6/9 (if C is the root). 2nd and 6th on top of a major triad give 6/9 (the 2nd is called a 9). 2nd and 7th would give you a major 9th chord (the 5th is usually left out). Hope that helps.
