There is no way, even with several dozen direct hits with massive H bombs that the enemy could take out our underground missiles, because our silos are not always visible, many of them are stealthy and hidden under farms, wheat fields in the Midwest, under mountain ranges. We have enough fire-power to destroy the entire surface of the Earth 100 times, including total evaporation of the oceans.
i am unsure what weapons will be used to wage world war three. there are many likely possibilities. there is one constant however, regarding world war four: it's weapons will be sticks and stones.

where the heck do i start? Russian subs started to get credible in the 80's when John Walker';s spy ring sold off data making him a large jerk. Russians started to care about their builders doing a good job (earlier efforts made the subs more dangerous to the crews onboard then they actually were to any enemy) and developed good manufacturing processes.

Im afraid you need to do your homework, the USA built 18 Ohio class subs but due to disarmament treaties she was forced to convort the first 4 built into SSGNs which while still powerful platforms they nolonger carry nuclear missles. This leaves the USA with 14 SSBNs, 4 SSGNs and i believe around 62 SSNs.

One fly in the ointment is that ALL surface and unfortunately SUB SURFACE ocean traffic can be located within about 1 mile re: satellite imagery that detects emissions of phosphorescent plankton in the ocean as there is a trail of this leading to the stern of all ships under way on the surface or not...apparently the US Navy bought the US research satellite that first reported this with the understanding it provided all kinds of arrows to where their ships and subs were. That's why we need more than a deterrence (missile defense), because though the Russians were the enemy, at least they could be counted on to be predictable and rational.

There is no way, even with several dozen direct hits with massive H bombs that the enemy could take out our underground missiles, because our silos are not always visible, many of them are stealthy and hidden under farms, wheat fields in the Midwest, under mountain ranges. We have enough fire-power to destroy the entire surface of the Earth 100 times, including total evaporation of the oceans.

My point is, the rest of the world knows we have enough nukes to wipe everyone else off the map, therefore they would be unlikely to nuke us since the best case scenario for them is knocking out a couple of our cities before their country was burned off the map.

First off, if a single nuke were used against the United States, it is HIGHLY unlikely that we would respond with a nuclear strike, even if we could determine that a nation was responsible.
Second off, `Mutually assured destruction' was fine and dandy with the Russians, who valued their own lives and loved their children just as we did, but it doesn't work against suicidal terrorists.
Sure, that's plenty to deter a rational nuclear power, but there are other threats these days.

I'm saying that the USA can absorb a nuclear hit without having to resort to a nuclear response. Sure the vengeful among us would demand we nuke mecca, or whatever else, but from a purely military standpoint, there isn't a target on earth we couldn't destroy with a conventional weapon while leaving the house next door in tact.
