Not that I didn't HAVE my own "free passes" ;-) and thus "rode' in the cab .. of several trains .. or the BACK CAB .. on weekends .. on the OCB "Vulcan" Railcars...
As I worked for the NZR .. in the District Civil Engineers Office , out of Fryatt St., behind the NZR Bus terminal .. at the south end of the Dunedin Passenger Yard... in the early 70's
That wee loco -- was a DUBBS .. (and is written about extensively .. Bruce Leitch's book : ENGINE CAB (Bruce Leitch was my super hero .. having as it was .. away back then .. the KIWI gift of the gab .. and a unique ability .. to gain ENGINE PASSES .. and Gaurdsvan passes .. to some of the most beautiful steam locomotive headed NZR running trains ..
And he wrote several good books.. the one I loved the best .. being called simply :
U know .. I used to walk past that wee "rusty" hulk of a totally neglected ICONIC museum piece .. sitting ALL FORLORN .. outside in all weathers .. beside it's look alike Double Failie ... (Josephene) .. at Dunedin's vintage museum .. away back in the very early 1970's & I always USED to wish .. that I owned it .. and could restore it to full running delight.
Isn't it a true pity..
That the once proud "Josephene" ..wasn't also in a full head of steam .. running the rails at the "beach" too.
is the ocean beach railway still running if so can you tell me when they are open for service?

Apparently that loco has a Westinghouse pump behind the front headstock! The only 'A' (1873) to have one.
