Well neither did Mike Smith!

It was written by a man named Ron Ryan, who didn't receive a cent in royalties from Mr Clark, even to this day!

Makes you wonder just how much Dave did write?

Hi CANARVONKID, just now reading your comment regarding the DC5 song 'Because' written by Ron Ryan. I believe Ron has acknowledged that Mike Smith did have a slight written input involvement with the song... Ron had the one verse as 'Give me a right to... ', and then Mike's suggested writing change so the wording was changed from 'right' to 'chance', as in 'Give me a chance to be near you'.

One day hopfully the truth will come out regarding Dave Clark.

He was sure a great businessman,but I wonder how deep his moral scruples went?

I am hoping Lenny Davidson sets the record aright by writing a book of the exploits of the DC5 in the 1960's.

It's too bad Dave has had such a tight grip on all their music.They recorded over 160 tracks during their heyday, and only 1/3 of them have been released commercialy!

I have a 3 CD bootleg, of good quality, with 100 tracks!:)

I met Mike twice in 2003 while he was on tour here in the USA! He told me that NO songs were written by Dave! All songs had Dave's name credited first and whoever's name followed IE: Davidson, Payton or Smith..that person was the writer!

Quite possibly true, but the song "Because" is only credited to Dave Clark. I don't know who else should be credited with that one.

@offshute I was the ghost-writer for the DC5, and wrote 'Because', 'Bit's and pieces', 'Anyway you want it', 'All of the time', and quite a few of their songs . Mike, Len', and Den' also wrote songs, but they all have Dave Clark's name on as well as theirs so that Dave could get 50% of the royalties even though he not not write any of the words or lyrics. If you go on the net and type in Ron Ryan you can read what happened back then, you might find it interesting.

This was common pratice in the trade in order for the star to cash in on half the lucrative royalties.

Elvis Presley didn't write songs but the Colonel forced co-writing credits as part of the deal to get recorded.

This is why Elvis' name appears on many of his songs from the fifties.

Denis also contributed low "constant pitch" harmonies especially noticeable on "Because"

Yes it is. Denis also co-wrote it. It was the b-side to "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby"
