WW2 was the "beginning of the end" for the British Empire. Thanks to Churchills bulldog tenacity, "this land we love so much" did "NOT go gentle into that good night, but raged against the dying of the light."
Yes throughout the war Churchill spoke about freedom and hope, especially whilst touring the US, sadly both ideals he was happy to deny the colonies of the Empire. The man was a hypocrite of the first order, beligerent and pompous. His time in govt is littered with disasters of his making and very often because of his conceited nature, from economic policy, to military strategies in both WW1 & WW2, he went from blunder to blunder. Thankfully the cautious Eisenhower ran the European campaign
What a wonderful work of Hollywood propaganda. Churchill would have been as good a dictator as Hitler or Stalin. A war-mongering imperialist from youth to old man, he never represented the nation he only represented himself and a very small social elite. His attitude towards India was no better than Hitler's view of Russia. He sent the army to Tonypandy to quell an industrial dispute between miners & owners, He looked after himself an his own, it was never his blood, sweat or tears. WAKE-UP FFS!
@Kralhonj All true but: our professor told us that when France fell, the Nazis "seemed to be power itself" and that it was England's contribution to break that spell. And Churchill was really instrumental in that. I think Hitler took all the old bad to the extreme, and in defeating that, Churchill made the old imperial ethos, and himself with it, a thing of the past. It's just taking a damn long time for that fact to sink in, especially here in the U.S.
@mookins45 Our biggest Ally in WW2 Was Adolf Hitler and his delusions of military strategy, if he'd listened to his generals England would have been knocked out of the war in 1940.
The greatest man of our time. Thank God he was there. Who will ever forget his inspiring speeches? He was a brilliant and exceptional human being. I keep coming back to this man and his work over, and over again in my life. We miss you Winston Churchill. God bless you and God Save The Queen.
It is true the British were colonists, but they did do some good, though also some very bad things. But perhaps it is fitting that Britain's finest hour was not at the high point of its imperial power but at the darkest point when it stared defeat and Nazism inthe face, alone. The true test of the mettle is often not in good times, when one is strong, but when one is weak and down trodden. I thought the British did rather well.
All I can say is thank god we live in more peaceful times, for the majority of us at least. The British did a lot for the freedom of Europe, a lot of people forget that. As an Irishman, you have my gratitude, for what it's worth.
@SlankTV and let us not forget also, that the British imperial power was responsible for the colonization , suppression and occupation of millions of fellow humans in a landscape that spread from Egypt, Iraq , India , Pakistan till Hong Kong. British values of democracy and human rights are noble but it seems they were only good for Britain
@ajarrar For a time yes, but let's face it, we do live in better times now. Always use History as a lesson to better ourselves, if we hold grudges for the mistakes and wrong doings of people's forefathers then you are no better than those you argue against.
Not as charismatic as Finney's Churchill but, I suspect, nearer to the truth. I was told by an old soldier that his famous 'V' sign came about as the top brass told him that the 2 fingered salute he was getting from the rank and file he had just told to expect 50% casualties in the forthcoming desert battle actually stood for 'Victory' and not 'Fuck You!'
A little known aspect of Churchill's defeat in 45. The Army Educational Corps, charged with indoctrinating soldiers with suitable patriotism, was manned almost exclusively with pro Labour working class intellectuals. They turned the Army against Churchill. None of this is to say that Churchill ought to have won in 45. Churchill was a good war leader but had nothing to offer peace time Britain.
TheWarWind thanks again from Lima, Perú. I cannot but hardly restrain the knot in my throat every time I see when Winston takes Clemmie's hands & she holds his hands, expressing that after all the defeats, disagreements & uncertainties about the future love remains.
The final scene, Winston & Clemmie bowing is perfect for me, with the nostalgic music. It express a humble gratitude for the life, with all his risks, sadness and joys. Thanks again.
@Voice463 He was just plain magnificent himself. How we miss the grandeur in this world and in leadership that was Winston. He was often wrong, but he was right in things that counted. He is forever my hero.
I'm glad to see that the people who insult him are in the minority.

A brilliant man. I'm sure he was a difficult man to live with. But we shall not see his like again until the times demand it.
