So beautiful; another memorable performance form the greatest tenor in recent history. Also, check out Sutherland's version (an old b&w tape): it's interesting to hear a soprano sing this. And it's magnificent!
i guess i just appreciate the fact that mario lanza was an italian-american, who performed these songs "for us" and also performed american music without an italian accent, which no italian tenor ever attempted to do.
@jgraif Why would an italian have to subdue his accent to sing american songs??? that is ridiculous. Would you try to perform an italian song without an american accent if you did not master the italian language first?? Ridiculous comment!
as beautiful as his voice is, i challenge any of you to compare this performance to lanza's interpretation. in my humble opinion as a trained musician, pavarotti treats this beautiful semi-classic as a "throw away"; affording it little if any emotional input. lanza, on the other hand, sings it as if his very life depends on it. in addition, lanza's voice exudes a clarity that, in my mind, has never been equalled. at times, pavarotti sounds like he is singing through a wet rag.
in my humble opinion, what could ever understand your people about music when your heavily accented english (it is called the rohtic form) quite resembles a metallic rasp, with all of your vowels tending to an innaturally inarticulate sound? I am Italian, anyway: history might not side for my country in these present harsh times, but I believe we still are left with the simple elegance of our sounds, the unattainable smoothness of 3 thousand years of history.
Classic Pavarotti: what a beautiful voice! For a soprano's take on this great song listen to Joan Sutherland's version; it's the black and white clip on the right. These are my two favorite versions sung by my two favorite singers, who will never be equalled.
@libetta and he is depending completely upon reading the score on his music stand and injecting NO emotion. he could have suggested obtaining the beautiful arrangement used in lanza's recording. why not? pavarotti certainly had enough "juice" to get bmg to release it and he consistently cited lanza as an inspiration. why not recognize and memorialize that great performance?
El mejor tenor de todos los tiempos.
