in prototype mode does the special attack charge quicker or have more shots? it looks like you can fire a lot more homing lasers in prototype mode.

What makes prototype mode unique is it has limited firepower. The 3-digit number at the lower right (in the video) is your ammo. Both the normal shot and the 'special attack' uses up ammo. Absorbing enemy bullets increases it (up to 999). OK. So for the special, 1 homing laser takes 10ammo. The ship releases a maximum 12 lasers in one attack; so that's 120 ammo. And if you have enough left over, you can fire off another 12...and another, and another as long as you still have enough.

It's an injoke. Players on the ikaruga site referred once to proto as to being "girl's mode" because the bosses are just ridiculously easy.

Another reason is that the pilot(character) of the prototype is a female, while the pilot(character) of the standard type is a male.
