Rig Rundown - Maroon 5's James Valentine

The tape is almost NEVER hiding anything, its just for the set and forget pedals or the tone knob as it tends to be in the middle and above the button so its easy to fuck your sound up and not even realize it. NOTHING SUCKS MORE THAN CHECKING GEAR AFTER A SHOW AND YOU REALIZE YOU WEREN"T EVEN REALLY ON YOUR OWN SETTINGS. Mainly my amp heads but now its a FIRST CHECK, I don't like drawing on vintage fenders and Marshalls otherwise I would mark my spots.

True bypass? Signal loss? yeah, that's the point.

True bypass doesn't touch the signal when the pedal's off, meaning it add's 3 feet of cable for every pedal that's off (or whatever the length of your cable is)

I find it amazing that he doesn't want a "firm" previously set up "Maroon 5" rig, but a flexible one, that allows him to shape his tone according to the room/venue/crowd... he really takes his role seriously and enjoys playing guitar. I't nice to see there are still guitar players out there who are able to stay human, and not night-to-night robots.

@guitaristguy20 Thanks for watching the video -- the interviewer was referring to the fact that fans often accuse artists of taping up their stompbox settings/controls to supposedly hide their tone secrets, but obviously, with James and many touring guitarists, functionality and security is the reason.
