  • Look at all the sisters dancing in the background!!

  • why does it always take a person of color, who can sing, has great rhythm, and can relate the desperation that the US people, in the year 2011, of all colors, who want their government, run by both R and D's, and whoever else they report their allegiance to.......do the right thing, and stop their juvenile ways, learn the lost art of ...compromise, meeting in the middle...this is why we the 99% or close to it..support...confronting..Wall Street, et. al....peace!

  • I absolutely love this song, the power in her coice. her voice ist just amazing. i love it.

  • soul with soul

  • john lennon loved his song. well so do i.hmmm hmmm.cant you see that im lonely

  • Aw, she's so cute :)

  • This looks like a clip from Shindig. Sounds like the song is done live here. Fontella could sing it well! Over there on the right are three ladies, The Blossoms, who were the house girl group on Shindig. In the middle of those three is Darlene Love, one of the great voices of the '60's for Phil Spector. Later, Darlene Love showed up as Danny Glover's wife in the Lethal Weapon movies.

  • Fontella, DAvid Peaston (her brother) and her mom, Martha Bass = phenomenal talent. David Peaston won the Apollo so many times, they had to change the rules. Even today he brings the house down whenever he performs. Martha Bass (mother) passed some years ago and Fontella had a stroke a few years ago.

Real talent is not found in popularity, it is found in the heart. The greatest talents often come from modest/poor backgrounds, but talent, hard work, and opportunity make the difference!

  • fantastic! 45 years ago..1965 she was 25 then ... wonder what she looks like now at 70? is she indeed still alive?.... those certainly were the days....

  • @z30soulbrother as far as i know fontella is still around, she sufferd a stroke in 2005 but was backing singer on an album in 2007.

  • Nothing today comes close to this and this song was one of many back in the day. Someone needs to come up and take the baton from these wonderful artists of the sixties. Check out Amy Winehouse's protegee Dionne Bromfield who has the potential to be as good as some of these greats.

  • Awesome! No seriously dudes how can you dislike this

  • Who are the 17 retards who don't like this ?????

  • @LODGE4444 for sure they 'aint got soul.

  • @LODGE4444

Assholes. That who they are, LOL. YouTube has made strides to stop the assholism that's displayed by some posters by changing the ratings system, but I guess they can't fix everything.

  • @GodivaMiyagi i think chess was already well and truly on the map well before motown came along, more of a case of chess expanding operations and jumping on the the soul train during the 60s :D

  • SUPERB

  • Aretha even

  • i listened to a far superior version i think it was a kareoke vesion SOUNDED LIKE ERITHA FRANKLIN

  • @lindsay3640 A far superior version to the original? You MUST be high. And it's spelled ARETHA, not Eritha. Goes to show you, young folks are ignorant of good music. Aretha didn't even sing this song originally, except for a American Express commercial in the 1990s.

  • @cjs33139 Actually the American Express commercial used the original Fontella Bass version, and didn't pay her any royalties at first either. To the best of my knowledge Aretha never sang this. Type "Rescue Me" "Fontella Bass" "American Express" in Google and you'll get some links on how she was screwed over royalties and started to fight for them after the American Express commercial.

  • @ChrisPawelski Really? thanks for the clarification. I read somewhere online that it was Aretha who sang it for American Express. Must be a typo. thanks! Glad Ms. Bass fought AE. How dare they not pay her!

  • @cjs33139 I saw as I searched on the net someone else said that A E used an Aretha Franklin version but I can't find any confirmation of that. The version of the commercial I am familiar with used the standard Bass song. And I too am very glad Ms. Bass fought for what was due for her and stuck it to them. It is shameful how so many artists of that era were screwed by various big corporations later.

  • 16 people dont understand american classics

  • Comment removed

  • It's a classic.

  • Love how the bass player doesn't have a strap on his instrument but doesn't let that stop him!

  • wow....music is now garbage. My generation sucks, period!

  • damnit this is too good.

  • When I was younger, I thought her name was Fawn TellaBass, and I wondered "Tella bass what?"

  • I think fontella definetly had a art in putting chess records on the map before that it was all motown, love love love this song :D

  • WOW!!! This is awesome!!!!!

  • This song was a hit then and it still is now!!

  • I'm with you completely!

  • I'm with you at all

  • Top class R&B soul track, one of my all-time favourites

  • 15 people actually gave this song 15 thumbs down? all of you 15 are douches!

  • @Machiavelli76 Justin Bieber has 15 accounts. On this video he used them all. That's how good this song is. ;)

  • @LittlPussi why is bieber's name on every video, please stop guys. it's too much, he's talented, but he is a super star.

  • She's so beautiful.

  • number one Hot ever!!!

  • I agree i am 17 and the music from those days are so much better than some nowa days.... JB fans get a life he is crap.... and ps to my friends i look fuck all like JB

  • Always coming back to this treasure. Muchisimas gracias.

  • How can this vid only have 368 000 views when Justin fucking GAY Bieber has 268 000 000 on his stupid, no talent, vid!?!?!?!?!?! It's frightening what people call music these days. Thumbs up please.

  • @JustZlatancom Really? Using gay as a derogatory term?? It's 2010, get with the programme.

  • Comment removed

  • @JustZlatancom Why is it that anytime a friend of good music such as this has to ruin it by disrespecting gay people in the process by calling Bieber gay!! WTF. I have seen people who despise Beiber call him gay, fag, faggot, everything in the book just because they dislike him. Sorry, not being PC, but as a gay man who agrees that I miss the old days of "good music", I dont see the point of anti-Beiber folks to slur us gay people in the process. Totally uncalled for!! Enough!!

  • @JustZlatancom Fucking A man. Fontella had a lot of range, she reminds me here of Aretha. Ughh, we all need to educate the kids today who are having to grow up on the crap which passes for music today. But gay hasn't got anything to do with it. I'd give my right nut for another Little Richard these days! Check out young Dionne Bromfield for a fresh perspective on what COULD BE. Dionne has a fantastic CD which covers the Motown classics. You will fall in love, instantly, guaranteed!

  • @JustZlatancom no mediatisation ...

  • @JustZlatancom fOR THOSE OF US THAT LIVED THIS STUFF ,NOTHING COMPARES TO ORIGINAL ARTISTS,I can say one thing some of the newer artists ruin the song they change something that is classic into something thatis just a bit off. But at least they aren't rappin aboutalll that crap and making it seem like every crime one can commit is music for kids to listen to.

  • @JustZlatancom everybody just watches justin bieber because they want to know what all the whining is about. So plz stop. Some of those views are your fault.

  • @JustZlatancom

agree about the little kid, but do you really need to gay him to insult, are you still at that point? That is also frightening to me...

  • @JustZlatancom your a dumb cunt. this has nothing to do with justin bieber

  • Today is her 70th birthday. Happy Birthday, Fontella Bass.

  • I LOVE THIS SONGG!! ;D

  • Original bassline by the incomperable James Jamerson - check him out
