I think the bottom line on these is that they're *somewhat* worth it if style and WOW factor is very important to you. They sound GREAT, but more like a set of $300 desktop speakers (which is still saying a lot).
If you're going to spend $1,000 on a set of desktop speakers and sound quality is a priority, I'd recommend the following: Genelec 8020B,

@psustud5327 you hit it right on the head, this product is about sound and style and not intentded to compete with powered pro monitors, it's a statement product, personally if I were choosing powered monitors I would shoot for the JBL LSR modes myself.
@sabbathcrazy You can pay $1000 on a 2 speaker set and EASILY have them be worth it. These just aren't really worth it to me, but it all depends on who you are. If style is just as important as sound then maybe they are. Sort of like Bang & Olufson buyers. Speakers cost up to $2100 per unit for desktop sets (Amphion) but these are ALL about sound, not much to their style, lol. These Harmon's are worth about $300 in my opinion, but their expensive acrylic enclosures are what you pay for.
@dawnnadir every penny. They are stunning to look at and everone that comes over looks at them and has to hear them. it's like some sort of ritual now when anyone comes over.
I have these diamonds! And i should say these are the greatest computer speakers or sound dock there is. They blow the Bose, B&W and my Eclipse speakers away. They are truly worth the price.
@vuongph Sorry very sorry, Dynaudio manufactrures still superior "PC" powered speakers. Bose is a joke, B&W good...Eclipse...ha. I use Dynaudio AIR monitors
as PC speakers and Genelec 8040's ...Paradigm Sub 1 and JL f113 for "PC" subs.
I used from 2003-2006 the soundsticks and isub... and then in 2006, I transitioned to my music across the network from the ipod HiFI speaker system, positioned across the room. I enjoyed the bass more from the Ipod HiFi, however, I liked the depth of the sound from the sound sticks. I imagine you've played with the ipod HiFi before... from soundsticks to these GLA, what sort of differences do you hear? is there honestly a 600 sound difference? and if you've used the hifi, differences?
@ebc0118 huge differences in clarity, definition, and dynamics. the Hifi is more like listeing to a cheap car stereo, plays loud but too much is missing across the range to call it hifi from an audio perspective.
I'm confused here.. why in the world would you post something on youtube trying to demo the sound of great speakers for us to "evaluate" using our computer spearks/ or whatever we're using?
It's quite pointless. (If you know anything about audio) Wouldn't you agree.
Playing this video and listening via our comp. speakers does nothing to illustrate that these sounds good or bad.
This is SO much more about the song playing than the sound of the speakers.
just listened to them at an authorized apple reseller. i actually went there to test the ipad but these babies really draw my attention. design and sound quality are two seperate things which cant be found together, but despite the gorgeous looks i was quite impressed (as i should when i heard the price). no doubt, FAR better than the Soundsticks, integration between the drivers was ok (no wonder considering woofer size) and the 3" was quite balanced for it's size. thumbs up.
typically yes becuase more dollars are spent on getting the look right or the company outsources the design and simply put speakers into it. With these there is actual engineering work on the sound first. CMMD material is used in some of the best Infinity speakers some costing 12k a pair, so we can safely assume these are the result of established technology and new thinking on how to apply it. They sound much better than my 200.00 point and shoot camera can capture.
Soundsticks are one of my favorite multimedia speakers. I give the company big props for a design that has stood the test of time with no modification...not many brands have been able to do that.
wow really? thats good to knoow! do u own them ur self?
this is an odd quesiotn but are they made in china? the sounsticks i mean.
oh and also, would it be better to get the bose companion 3 instead of the soundsticks? (same setup , 2 speakers and a woofer, im sure u already knew that lol)
Ss with many of the Harman products all the engineering is done here in the USA. From there they choose which factory location the products will be built at. When you think about it there is no difference between an injection molding maching running instructions from a computer in China or here in the USA. Quality is a function of engineering plus ensuring those specifications are met each time one item is produced.
true, but even with all the engineering involved, the material used can make a product built strong and have good quality or it can make a product feel and look like garbage
take the iphone for example
beatiful piece of engineering, but the plastic back, well thats ok butt he chrome bezel is plastic!
I feel ya, sometimes how a product feels to the touch is directly linked to perception of perceived quality. Of course, I am sure costs play big part too. I've had soundsticks for the better part of 4 years but have since upgraded them ...aka gifted them to someone in need to save them from bad sound
@randomrazr NO GOOD... They would'nt come close! they are not worth their price. Nothing Bose does is. Think back to what always impresses you about Bose... Good bass. But that's ALL they do well. And not even that well. Bose almost always tries to get away with using "full range" drivers. This technique DOES NOT allow for crisp, refined and quality highs.
Next to this, the Bose speakers would sound muffled! Compare the Bose Sounddock to the *original Harman Kardon Go+Play ipod boombox.
@randomrazr NOOOOOO, lol. These are MUCH better... but maybe not worth the difference in price.
Sounds sticks are missing nearly 5,000Hz at the top end (treble) so they have no sizzle or sparkle. Symbols won't sound as crisp on Soundsticks as they will on these or any speaker missing a separate tweeter, but instead utilizing full range drivers (this doesn't apply to EVERY speaker using full range drivers out there mind you).

Dynaudio BM 5A or Focal Professional CMS 40s
These will all sound 2x's as good as the Harmons
