They may be endangered - but they are often seen in canyons. In fact they are known as "canyon snakes" because they are the ones most frequently seen.
I don't know if you guys realise but that was quite a significant sighting. Broad-headed snakes (Hoplocephalus bungaroides) are one NSW, if not Australia's, most endangered and rare snakes. More so, they rarely leave their retreats, under rocks in winter and in the trees in summer. So to see one swimming is really something. Good on you for admiring it and leaving it alone!!
