@drtusi While I agree that it is a sick, twisted film (I personally wouldn't watch it again), I think the whole point is to make a statement on just how disgusting and morbid society is. This movie, as shocking and disturbing as it may be, doesn't even match what humans have done to each other in real life. I think it's meant to open your eyes and let you know that you live in a very sick world.

What do you think of other sick shockers like Men Behind The Sun, A Serbian Film (I refuse to see this one after all the things i've heard about it including that newborn rape), In a Glass Cage, The Untold Story, Ilsa She-Wolf of the SS, Bloodsucking Freaks, Caligula, Emmnauel in America, Cannibal Ferox, Cannibal Holocaust, Martyrs, Guiena Pig, Ichi The Killer etc.?

@Johnlindsey289 Of the ones you mentioned, I have only seen Men Behind the Sun, A Serbian Film, In a Glass Cage, both Cannibal films, Martyrs, Guinea Pig and Ichi the Killer. If you were asking if they were any good, you should give Men Behind the Sun, In a Glass Cage, Cannibal Holocaust and Martyrs a try. Unlike the others, they afford some actual philosophy and meaningful themes.

MBTS made me sick big time even when i found out afterwards the dead corpse they used for the autopsy was real, made me take a shower. In a Glass Cage was horrifying stuff and i refuse to see Serbian Film after all the horrible things i've heard from literal skullfucking to a newborn baby being raped, OMG what trash that is. Ichi is awesome and Martrys is a work of art, Guiena Pig is just puke inducing.

@Johnlindsey289 I liked Men Behind the Sun because, like Salo, it showed the true, gruesome side of humanity, and depicted the horrors in Nanking after WWII as honestly as film would allow. I agree, A Serbian Film is so pointlessly sick, it shouldn't really be watched. Whatever lesson (if any) it had to teach, I did not catch it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I'll never watch it again. Ever. It was a mistake.

Damn right, i can't believe i sat through this disgusting movie back in 99 when i rented this on DVD and Guiena Pig is much worse. Serbain Film i hear is equally as horrifying as this and do you think this movie is as disturbing as Passion of the Christ or Men Behind The Sun?

@Johnlindsey289 I have no intention of ever watching A Serbian Film as i've heard some truly vile and hideously disgusting things about it. Anyone who would willingly sit through a movie in which a newborn baby gets raped is seriously fucked up in the head as far as i'm concerned. I thought The Passion of the Christ was a very good movie even though it was very sad, depressing and difficult to watch but MBTS made me want to vomit my brains out and feel like beating the shit out of it's makers.

I know, it's just a horrifying thought. MBTS is an inhuman abomination of a movie isn't that right? i mean the makers trying to make an educational movie about how the Japanese tortured Russians and Chinese people, filming in a morgue at a scene where they do an autopsy on a live dead kid's corpse and killing a live cat in a pit of flesh-eating rats. What about In a Glass Cage, Bloodsucking Freaks or Irreversible? disturbing stuff eh?

The film itself is a satire on how much society tries to force the next generation to fit into their definition of "normalcy", especially a fascist society.

As for the theme, it's one of my all-time favorite film themes of all time.

For some odd ass reason, my College library bought the DVD for this film.

What's even more hilarious, is that they didn't display it when they were displaying the "controversial" films in the DVD display. I think this thing is still banned in Australia.

It is still banned in Australia. I watched it in Lisbon when I was about 17 and I was horrified; nevertheless and solely under a film making and aesthetics point of view, I consider Pasolini a excellent film maker and I often like his humour and polemic approaches in many of his other films....This one I still find difficult to chew... :)

Whenever I hear anyone play (or sing) 'These Foolish Things,' I smile and think of the movie "Salo." People have said that the theme to "Salo" is not this tune, but the two themes are so close that they're almost interchangeable.

@gorypleasure It actually works perfectly when you think about it. The four men saw the atrocities they committed as nothing more than casual entertainment that they acted out with no remorse whatsoever. This song really adds to the relaxed, carefree mood in the same way that the pianist's music did throughout the movie. Plus everyone knows that incongruous music makes creepy movies even creepier. ;-)
