  • disagree. Zak brought songs to life - even more so than Phillips.

  • All the drummers since Keith have been good at laying in down and adapting their playing styles. Luckily they never tried to copy Keith. No one could ever match Keith on form anyway.

  • the extra guitarrist look like a homosexual punk XD

  • What's with the dude on the electric guitar and his lame dance moves???

  • lol townshend that haircut,.. haha

and the extra guitarist, wtf, feel urges to kill him

  • Poor Entwistle. Drummer is stiff as.

  • Not a top performance. Roger's vocal is a bit limp and the 'other' guitarist is a twat.

  • The Guitar player here, is Pete's brother Simon. Who plays with the more current lineup they've toured with, just without the moves. lol

  • @Musicjuicebox thats not simon....thats steve bolton.

  • @dougm1971 wow you are right. my mistake.

  • Outstanding!!!

  • Ooof! I remember this when it was on TV. I was awestruck at how they sucked the life out their live performances. They didnt need to try and cash in on the the 80's summers' of love. They were outstanding before....

  • Who's the friggin wanker on second guitar?

  • lame singing. Datlrey could better!

  • Pound for pound, the best rock band on the planet!

  • Who the hell's that nobhead playing guitar on the left?

  • the guitar dude looks acts like those characters on guitar hero, really silly

  • that douche bag back up guitarist is acting like a fucking monkey...trust me wen he sees this clip now he must be embarrassed by his antics....fucking dick..play the guitar and shut up sideman....motherfucker

i love this line-up...cause of simon phillips on drums..he blows sullen wanker zach starkey off the map...

  • @StraightTwoDVD You, (the burger flipper) say Zach Starkey is a wanker, whereas Pete and Rog say he's the best drummer since Keith moon and in many respects even better on certain songs because of his style, but why believe members of the band when we can listen to cunts like you. Prick.

  • @StraightTwoDVD

Simmon phillips does not fit The Who plus compared to Moon hes garabage hes an overrated drummer anyway

  • @H1GhVoL7aGe Only by people who know nothing about drumming.

  • @harnois75

quite right I dont know anything about Drumming just that Moon is one of the best and Simmon Phillips sounds horrible with The Who

  • @H1GhVoL7aGe Then you ought to check out 40 years of well respected work from Phillips before passing an idiotic judgement like 'garbage' and 'overrated'. Overrated by who? Not Townshend, or Louie Belson, or Buddy Rich, or Jeff Beck, or Oldfield, or anyone that is qualified to judge musicianship intelligently. Moon was great, and will always be the heart of The Who, but Phillips is a similarly spontaneous fiery drummer, which is why he's been a long time cohort of Townshend. Zak is merely ok.

  • @harnois75

Clearly I know nothing of drumming and you know nothing of The Who........ any so called fan of The Who would know Simmon sounds horrible with The Who he can be better than Zak at Drumming but Zak fits in a hell of a lot better than Simmon could ever dream. Simmon is no where nearly a "spontaneous" drummer as Moon... so someone as you say that is so "musically talented would know simmon is no way shape form or fashion similar to Moon.. so fuck off your argument is not valid

  • @H1GhVoL7aGe Haha. "Fuck off ' is that the strength of your argument? You stupid turd. You have self professed to know nothing of drumming and yet feel able to refer to Simon Phillips as overrated. If ever there was an invalid argument that is it. Townshend himself said he did not want any drummer to imitate Moon. I suggest that before you write off a career with such a display of ignorance you find out who you are talking about. It was Phillips who rekindled Townshends interest in playing live.

  • @harnois75

i already said i know nothing of drumming but isent quite funny that Zak can atleast play I Can See For Miles right...while you got simmon over hear playing it of the hi hat.. leaving nothing original no pounding bass drums....... no cymbals and toms working around the beat like Moon did yet you have the nerve to say simmon is "similar" to moon..... you know nothing of The Who my friend

  • @H1GhVoL7aGe I know plenty about The Who. I've seen them, & Townshend, live a dozen times since 1977. Phillips certainly has the chops and spontaneity you refute. Zak is ok, but doesn't bring the songs to life. And I didn't say Simon was similar to Moon, I said he had similar spontaneity, the style is different but the attack and aggression coupled with an ability to wing it, enjoy it and react to what the other musicians are doing is the same approach. He doesn't need to be a Moon imitator.

  • @harnois75 i agree with your take. i love what Phillips did with the Who. i think Zak doesn't really measure up to the Who.

  • I hate when Townsend plays an acoustic on live shows. He should stick with an electric and let Daltrey play acoustic if they need one. I saw the ho during the `89 tour and Pete played only acoustic. It wasn`t the Who I wanted to see. That other guitatist was a waste.

Simon Phillips is an exceptional drummer. Probably the best in the business for my money. Don`t anybody write me back and tell me Neal Peart is better. I don`t care for Peart....

  • Love Simon's playing, one of the most talented guys ever.

  • Of course it's a live performance. In the digital age video never matches the audio.

    The Who are the best.

  • Wrong ... it's live.

    Not bad... quite good actually.

  • People like to trash The Who... why? I do not know.

It's like religion: You can't make an argument that a particular band is all live, & not lip-synching their tune, to people that believe it's faked.

Like talking to a wall, or TRUE-BELIEVER.

The Who play live... their performance is too sloppy to be faked.

& The Who's rawness is one of the reasons they are my favorite band.

It's real rock & roll, kids...

    TRUE, so BELIEVE it.

    Oh yeah... 'Rock Lives'...

  • the who is my fav band. LOVE them - im not trashing them - im just angry that so many performances on tv shows are overdubbed / synced

im just always suspicious about watching performances on tv shows because many ARE lipsynced

now that I watch this again, i STILL DO believe its just a sync - check out the drums at 2:30

  • Okay, checked the drums at 2:30.

I don't know what you are seeing-hearing, because the drum sounds on the track match his movements.

  • whoops - in my FIRST comment on here i mean to say that i think that the VOCALS ARE LIVE, but the drums and guitar are SYNCED. the vocals are definitely live - you can tell by the way their mouths move.

  • HOWEVER..

At the beginning of 'The Kids Are Alright' movie, they ARE NOT playing 'My Generation' live.

That's the studio version they are lip-synching, not actually playing any part.

They DID do that in the beginning.

Everyone did that on their TV appearances back then, even the Stones.

  • Whether or not someone lip synchs on TV usually depends on what show you're watching. The Stones played live when they did Ed Sullivan, but on Top Of The Pops, they lip synched. If I'm not mistaken, the clip of Anyway Anyhow Anywhere that's in The Kids Are Alright is live, but most of the other TV appearances the band did in the 60's and 70's were lip synched. You can always tell by looking at Keith. He looks like he's trying to avoid actually hitting the drums when they would lip synch.

  • As a professional bass player, I can say for sure, that each musician, (& Roger's vocals), visually are playing each inflection in each musical part, matching the sound in this video.

'Inflections' meaning the unique parts of this version I've never heard in any other version... I own hundreds of live & studio Who gigs.

& I've played many of their tunes live for decades.

  • LOL. townshends hair.

  • They are lip syncing to the live version on Join Together CD/DVD

  • roger's voice sucked on this song

  • God who is that berk on electric guitar?!

  • I never liked Simons playing, he's a great drummer, but he's all jazz, this song had very definitive drumming, I see no reason to change it

changing what Keith laid down would be the same as completely changing the guitar chords and words to a song

The Who has to flow in a natural way, making it real tight like its Return to Forever doesn't jive, just as Kenny Jones not playing any cymbals in Baba made no sense and sucked

  • Simon Phillips did the good job covering the loss of Keith Moon. And now Zak Starkey is literally incredible.

  • i dont like the extra guitarist....

    it bugs me.

  • they shud have just had Roger play rhythm and Pete play lead as usual no need for that fucking weirdo spazzing out

  • yea, very true.

  • The reason Pete didn't play electric guitar in this version of the band was because HE DIDN'T WANT TO.

Oh, and there's no way they're lip synching. First of all, this is very obviously not the original version of the song. All you have to do is listen to the vocals and you can tell they're singing live.

  • @Jerichoholic20 Or have pete switching between the two, like in the good old days

  • Haha, John looks really annoyd about the guitarrist not being able to stand still.

  • Good grief, that's rare. He's not playing an Exploiter or a Buzzard.

  • Actually the drummer does a fair imitation of Keith Moon.

  • This was about a year after I fell right in love with my sweet babboo!

  • more like The Who with 80's pop bull shit!!!!!!

  • haha why do u say that?

  • like the keyboards the guitarist how he dresses the backup singers, just not The Who

  • do u like the who though?

  • oh yeah The Who is one of my favorite bands i have every album.

  • u have every album ever made by them?

  • well every one except Face Dances but that album want much of an album i know that some day ill get it though

  • You should get it dude,i think it's a bit underated personally. Better than It's Hard i think.

    Regards.

  • I actually think Steve Bolton is a pretty cool player.

Now should he be replacing Pete Townshend as the lead guitarist in the fucking Who? Probably not.

  • I love the Who, but this is like Belgiums entry in the Eurovison song contest... The only time i've ever struggled to watch a Who vid.....

  • well said . this is appalling

  • well that it shocking, the only thing i can say is rogers voice is great. and johns as cool as ever but everything else is pants

  • That´s not the Who...not a band...wrong drummer, horrible Bolton on guitar..oh fuck.. Even Rabbit..where´s his chair? They are so much better now!!! This is hard to watch..

  • Agrred. Simply nothing more than a severely waterd down version of a great band to appeal to 'new masses. Should have been promoted as "The Who On Ice"

  • The Who at their worst! Steve Bolton doesn't have the right sound. Townshend wanted Dave Gilmour to play lead, dunno what happened there.

  • Why the hell is Townshend only playing acoustic here?

  • Because the condition his ears were in he could not take it

  • Woah, who's the drummer? He's awesome!

  • Simon Phillips. He's one of the best drummers in the world.

  • Wow, I figured it was him but he looks so different in this video. Thanks

  • Cool video... who's that rockin' the Zubaz in the corner?

  • Steve Bolton is the guitarist in the ripped, patched pants (Zubaz? NOT, lol).
