You can SLI cards with the same GPU, but different core clocks. So you can have an 8800 GT stock clocked running on the same system as an 8800 GT Superclocked. You can also use two cards from different companies (like XFX or EVGA) The main point is that they HAVE to have the same GPU.

8800 performs better than the 9600. cause of more stream processing . So go for the 8800 if you have the money.
