I had the great pleaseure of seeing Devia in Anna Bolena (Verona) a few years ago. It was worth the trip from California. I was with two very big fans of hers and got to meet her after the opera. She was charming and much smaller than I thought. A very gracious lady. For those who think she can't trill, I have her debut at the MET in Rigoletto where she trills the end of "Caro Nome" forever. We are lucky to have her still singing.

It is truly amazing at the venom of these queens on this youtube. Horrible. They know nothing about operas. They have never even looked at a sheet of music, let alone tried to sing one. But if a person makes an impressive sound, they are suddenly a "great artist" Well, the word artist has meaning to me, and it is not someone who totally rewrites operas, musical lines, interpolates high notes here and totally misses the trills in a line. Because she cannot do them.

has anyone checked the score of Anna Bolena and followed her singing, with the score? She messes up the ascending line with all the trills, and that is about .. well, the biggest technical challenge in the piece. And she has changed Puritani into something other than Belllni.. The embellishments do not fit What Bellini would have written. The vocalism is amazing. Great sound. Coloratura Sopranos should not rewrite operas, and become composers themselves.

A few considerations for you. Having the score in hand does not mean to understand the music. Mentioning the word trill does not demonstrate any technical knowledge. I would advice you to read more on the subject. If we are talking about missing notes in the case of Devia, than we would not listen to anybody else, since artists of the calibre of Callas, for example, used to leave out not only notes, but the full da capos or entire parts of the opera.

What an artist performs in a particular opera is heavily influenced by the conductor, however, when an artist such as Devia constantly puts notes in that are not there, and leaves others out that are there and refuses to sing trills, ... one gets the impression that she cannot sing the score, or will not sing the score as written. So rather than comparing artists to each other, lets compare them to an objective "musical" standard. If you apply that to Ms Devia she fails.

Devia interpolates high notes because she still can. Have a look at the high notes Callas interpolated even in operas such as Aida (the ensemble), Trovatore (cabaletta Di tale amor), or Traviata. You cannot judge singers you like with one type of scales, and singers you do not like with a different type. Sorry, mate! Not only does Devia sing good trills, but she sings different types of them also. You simply have to listen to her recordings.

By what you write I have the impression you are not very familiar with the belcanto tradition. To have an idea of the style, ornamentations and the way these roles should be sung you might find beneficial to read Garcia. Not only interpolations were allowed, but sometimes composers were more than happy to write variations for different singers.

I most certainly do, and I do not need to read Garcia again. LOL, You are so superficial. The woman recomposes music. Bellini cautioned singers, not to make up embellishments or otherwise it would not sound like Belllini and you know he was right. That Callas interpolated a NOTE or two in an aria, does not give Devia license to interpolate and change most of the aria. Somewhere in this, I WANT TO HEAR WHAT THE COMPOSER WROTE. I know, gee, a trivial matter to you.
