Cool video, I have been training in Tang Soo Do for a short while now but plan on training in other styles in the future. It's good to see videos that show respect to other styles of martial arts and not saying one is better.
here is cleary the diference beetwn the sifu and the studient, michelle maybe is in the second level went was the figth, becose she isnot using the chi gerk tecnic, but no more what that, i really cool what you fight with ohter martial art
Friendly feedback: I saw you used a lead leg sidekick. Just make sure to keep your hands up on ALL kicks. And use that lead leg side kick if someone is rushing in with hands. Try and time out your opponent and stick them with that lead leg sidekick when their chest is exposed and they are rushing forward.
Hey To The Tang Soo Do Dude, I Don't wanna seem like an ass But almost everytime you throw those heavy punches you leave your chin wide open, if you tuck it in just a bit it will seriously reduce the chance of the opponent catching your chin, Happy Training. :D
I've watched your sparring vids vs Wing Chun. I'm a former Student of Master Mazza and have trained in other arts as well. i haven't read all of the comments but I wanted to offer my input.
1st: Learn to defend the punch rather than turn from it. 2nd: learn to side step an attack. going back on your heels takes away your balance and power. 3rd: remember more targets than the face. Legs and body were open for some of your strikes. 4: set up your attacks. show one attack and deliver another.
I'm never a fan of man/woman sparring. Something about the sight of a man hitting a woman makes my stomach turn, no matter what the scenario. I realize that it wasn't your goal to hurt her and this was a friendly practice, but that's just my opinion.
It's about the artist not the art. A system is only as good as the practitioner and it looked like the Tang Soo Do guy was kicking butt here. But take heart, with practice you'll get better.
WOW, it is hard to fight a cute girl, I am too easily distracted I guess lol. Love the vid though, nice to see some one else who loves the martial arts for what they are and is not caught up in the old "Style vs Style" syndrome
Nice vid but if I may try not to trust your head up and keep it protected behind your hand as you strike, it makes an easy target for a counter. Then again, as a sparring it's quite hard to control all of that.
try and keep your head down and step into your punches more. keep them fluid and direct with the other hand protecting you from a little over a foot infront of your face.
Michelle isn't a bad fighter at all, i can see that she can defend herself. but based on what i see i'll say, wing chun suggests to apply constant pressure to the opponent but if its a martial arts opponent pressure needs to be applied having immobilized an opponents hand after a punch or leg after a kick, thats what Michelle should be looking to do. however i think she is really cute, she'll get a 7 out 10 for the fight and a 10 out of 10 for cuteness. lol
I love how both students of there styles showed respect to each other. On a side note when I see video of Wing Chun or a Sifu explaining it, it makes sence. Vertical punches. Shortest distance is a straight line. Attack centerline while protecting yours etc. However every video ive seen when a wing chun fighter is fighting freestlye(Wing Chun to Wing Chun, or other styles) the art looks stiff. I know there kids but he was able to hit her center with ease. That should be the hardest place to hit
There are tactical weaknesses in both styles on display and personal weak points in both fighters. Seeing as this is the Tang Soo Do fighters video then I will advise you. ;-) The Wing Chun fighter wants to crowd you and in this video the fighter is taking steps for punching and is breaching the distance of engagement short of being effective. What you need to do is faint side steps in order to create distance for your long range kicks. The fighter you faced doesn't know how to use the t step.
the girl is good only her entrances are too open.. she doesnt have to pac lap hit.. she can catch it while doin a combo to the head.. if mon sau hand is far out then that wu hand will be pre occupied.. squeezing the triangle guard.. especially in pressure.. i mean the guy is open too by high guard but atleast hes not giving what she wants... to trap both hands to shock him.. but i wouldnt put that rear block hand down too.. atleast an elbow next to his ribs not in front.for surprise counter
in wing chun dont we wait for them to attack first and then we intercept hisattack followed by a block and a strike hitting where we can see a gap unblocked
1:16 The Tang Soo Do guy takes a clean shot at the lady who does Wing Chun on to her centerline? If she is sparring at her level I think there is something wrong here!
I think your friend is dropping her guard too much and her body is not centre enough. Also that little kick of hers puts her off balance so I would suggest to eliminate it.
the wingchunfigher is playing the tang soo game. she should keep constant pressure on her opponent.also leg sweeps to unbalance her and straight trhust kicks to the lead lead. just something to think about.
see this is what its all about being respectful and learning were you can improve in your style not saying "this style is the best and nothing else is worth learning" like so many MMA fighters seem to think
Thanks for commenting and watching! Yeah, the purpose of these videos is for me to see where I need to improve and refine. I know I am quite inexperienced as a fighter but watching these gives me some insight where I need to fix things.
@RakaiThwei no that is always a good idea.. watching your videos for self motivation.. and understanding, and improvement.. i agree, i do the same with mine
Nice interesting video dude, nice soundtrack. Gotta work more on your footwork. What's the difference of tang soo do and tae kwon do? I'd like to learn from someone who practices it and not from the web...
The difference between Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do is traditions and approach to fighting. Tang Soo Do has more hand techniques than Tae Kwon Do, and it has roots in Kung-Fu, Shotokan Karate and Taekkyon.
Tae Kwon Do is more kicking, and has become more of a sport than a martial art, and doesn't have as many hand techniques as Tang Soo Do.
Props for someone who knows what he's talking about. It is true, Taekwondo is more kicking oriented. However, I pratice in a school of Traditional and Martial Taekwondo, and we are less oriented to the WTF practices and we even learn Hyong patterns. In many aspects Tang Soo Do was one of the martial arts which inspired Taekwondo. And the beauty of martial arts training is when you are not worried about the strict rules of certain styles. That's when the real learning begins.
@MysteryMachine21 I think a more accurate description of Tang Soo Do is that it uses techniques from Kung Fu such as reverse round houses and several open hand strikes, as well as hard hard techniques from Shorei-Ryu or Shotokan. The basic kicks (side, round-house, front, back, in-out, out-in) were taken from Tae-Kyun which has nothing to do with Tae Kwon Do. It was a kind of dancing fight similar to Capoera. The basic kicks do look similar to Tae Kwon Do, but they involve rotation of the hip
It was nice for you to carry Michelle along like that so she could get some sparring practice in. She's obviously got her work cut out for her since she only seems to have the arrow punch down (no hyun saos, no bong saus, no bong laps, etc.), but she's got to start somewhere, and you were nice enough to help her out. You're a nice guy.
Nice one: unfortunately, without any head punches you carry on forever. Wing chun would suggest to block or deflect a first kick and go straight for the head with chain punches...
I know this is an old old video, but here you need to work on your footwork. Keep your opponent in front of you. Shes cutting off some of your angles of attack by circling around you to your back.
Not Bad from my view, good fight and all, nice, also if you were afraid to hurt someone with your kicked take the shoes off, although it would be pretty tough to kick with Wing Chuns ability to close in on their opponents, but i liked this fight it was a good show of skill on both sides.
As amateurs you should protect yourself more, head and shin protection at least! Without that the sparring has to remain "soft". Its great to have respect for the training partner, but protection is needed to reach the real "self defense level" in training. Keep up the good work. Thumb up!
the pretty girl with black do-gi, she's full of fighting spirit, awesome. May be one day she'll become shining female kung-fu star, wish you luck sexy thing.
Good work man its great that your tried at least and i think if you use some side kicks and front kicks to keep the opponent away you'll be pretty hard to get into.
But well done looks like you guys are trying and thats the main thing. Make sure to keep your jaw tucked harder to get knocked out that way.
Good work, looks like a nice fun sparring session which is the whole idea. Congrats for having the guts to go train with another style, i'm sure it will benefit you heaps.
TSD has some beautiful kicks and some practical karate style punches. It should give you a decent base (my mate was trained in it). WC is excellent if trained correctly (with lots of sparring to learn to apply your chi sao).
I've been wanted to take up Wing Chun for some time. After seeing IP Man makes me want to do it again. I love the style an how its all about defense. From New York With Love
P.S. The girl in the video Is supper pretty. Keep it up & Live It Up ;)
Pretty even fight if she had been able to block out the fear of a strike to the face she would have landed alot more. Also if you didnt have shoes it looked like every one of your high kicks would have landed.
Yeah, getting to a point where 1)You know when and how to throw a punch fully and properly, 2)Learn how to get out of most wrestling moves/ "Real" street situations, and 3) you find what style-mix suits you should all come either during, or before learning just traditional martial arts.
Also: 4)learning/understanding discipline and general respect concepts, and 5) how to properly exercise and care for the body...too.
how prevalent is tang soo do? from how u refer to your uniform im guessing its korean (that and your kicking style), but other then tae kwon do almost any korean martial art doesnt get any mentioning. i did a year of kuk sool won myself, but unfortunately classes and work made it almost impossible to get back into it.
also, seeing a chinese style that disregards kicks above the knee vs a korean style (were kicking seems to be the lifeblood of almost any form)... it was really interesting spar
Tang Soo Do is pretty simple, and effective for a hard style but it all depends on how you train in it. If you have a school which teaches you tournament style sparring, it's going to be very hard in breaking that pattern, but if you have a school which teaches it for application on the street, I'd say you're good to go.
To the male fighter. You really need to work on staying a bit more relaxed. Keep your hands up like a boxer to protect the head. Stand more square so that you can transition from left/right quickly with your strikes. When someones legs are that close to yours round-house them hard. Your opponent will think twice in standing close to you then.
Good sparring video example: /watch?v=Lx4WeGm08Pk
Sparring comes up at the 2 minute mark. But good video!
well done to both of you guys you should spar people alot more so you can get better strategies and also more knowledge try fighting other styled fighters as well it will help alot. But well done to both fighters.
@RakaiThwei let me first say you didn't do all that bad,but one thing I noticed is that you wait too much.what I mean by that is you're waiting for your opponent, which means you're adapting to them. That makes you predictable, which is something you don't want to be in the ring.So my advice is to stay on your toes, keep moving, make your opponent adapt to you.And don't throw just one strike, follow up,throw combinations. One strike is easier to avoid then multiple strikes.keep training =)
Nice kick to the head, you should of done more side kicks and followed up w/ a back spin hook, or back spin side, she was open for that. Also, work on your footwork more, float like a butterfly and sting like a bee, and move the head more, especially against a mostly linear hand style like wing chun, good attempt though!!
Ooh...looked like a lot of fun. I do kung fu but will be sparring some TKD people soon. Shame you had to hold back on the kicks. TSD is like TKD in the kicking respect, isn't it?
Well, to the fighter in the black, you did well, you followed WC's principles quite well, except when you changed your gaurd, keep it up, or you'll be far less effective.
To the fighter in the white, I've never practiced TSD, but I believe you did quite well, but try not to take so many punches, when you come in for close combat, you have to really be careful, you did well, just work on retracting, and blocking-
I recommend you develop good footwork; its a precursor to bridging the gap between two fighters or maintaining distance to deliver devastating kicks. alternate from solid forward advances to explosive and flowing footwork to travel into the opponent back to yielding/ deflection footwork to anticipate counter attacks and mix and match depending on the angle of your opponent.
Wow!! Is this girl single??? I'm quite impressed... and to the Tan Soo Do fighter, I'm impressed with the control you showed with that hook kick. You could have hit her but showed respect and didn't.
hmm when we spar at Wing Chun, we always have to keep both shoulders straight towards the opponent, so we can use both arms. You can see that later on she loses her Wing Chun stance and therefore loses all of Wing Chuns power because she can no longer use her left hand effectively.
from one wc practitioner to another, not a bad job. i'm a brown sash under one of taisifu cheung's students. you may have stopped it thus far but don't reach for your adversary. i'm average height for a woman but i have long legs and fairly long arms so i too take issue with closing the gap of a taller opponent. good luck in your study and really work the muk yan jong.
The Wing Chun student does not appear to be used to freestyle contact sparring. In my experience, most upper-intermediate WC students should be able to block out most TKD/Karate techniques at the 1st Dan level. Usually the WC blocks significantly outperform the others' hand techniques. This shows that in reality, it is the person's attributes, not just techniques.
i had to fight a super hot chick in a TSD tournie once..... we had been kickin it all day, then ended up in the same group. was odd... i won :( but she got me realllllly good when i hesitated on an open shot to her face... straight up groin kicked me, took me to my knees ... good times
@SKRIPTSforLIFE lol i'd get my ass kicked, i never hit girls, especially not hot ones, hitting a hot girl is like slamming a mace into your balls, you just don't do that
If you need, you hit girls because they will hit you. Youst because they dont have dick means you must take hits from them and they have 2 arms and 2 legs, they just like you, so they can handle punch if they want !
I know having a black belt doesn't mean you're an excellent fighter necessarily, but you have one, meaning you should have mastered all the basics of that particular style, even at first dan. You both have potential, but to be honest, I think the girl was a little below the level of WC as you are in Tang Soo Do. I gotta agree with the critique of most of the people here. I mean the constructive ones. Glad you're always practicing. I am too with my kung fu. Plus, she's gorgeous! My gawd!!!!!!
Watching this. You can see that Girl has Potential. Keeps moving and pretty quick to. Keep it up! You'll never get beat!
I am a lil suprized that when he put his foot up and held it there. She didn't cross grab like at the end of the SLT and lock him to the ground. But She did goos!
@iApna I have to agree...the kicks were great and a few barely grazed her head and face...biggest critique...stop over reaching with your punches...it's a common beginner's mistake but can really get you hurt...get in there, block the hits and then attack. Never rely on "forms" or "kata" that teach block-then-attack...it's a simultaneous movement...KEEP IT UP YOU HAVE GREAT POTENTIAL!!
great techniques but you should be more patient with your moves... you got the techniques but when using it you are just trying to attack.... be patient and counter then attack..... thats how wing chun should be use like self defense...... just watch master wong and you would learn so much....
WC shouldnt be 'used for self defense'. It's a fighting style. You fight with it. And recommending that you watch a youtube dude to 'learn so much'... you have to train. Find a sifu and learn WC, thats the only way.
@superbadlucre What superbadlucre means when he says WC shouldnt be used for self defense, is something that took me some time to understand, having trained in WC for several years. You CAN use it to defend yourself, however I think he means it's not a self defense technique or learned series of techniques to use against certain moves. Correct me, superbadlucre, if I misinterpreted your statement.
I recommend you give this ago, I had the same problem as you before I sat down and did this.
Wear a helmet, and get your friend to punch you several times, but LOOK at the punch, pratice not to look away. Later, then practice taking a bunch and moving your body to direct the force. Works magic :)
@RakaiThwei I have to agree with SandToof. I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do that I earned many years ago. That said, BJJ is such an amazing art. I feel more confident as a blue belt in BJJ, then I ever felt as a black belt.
@SandToof bjj is a great style for one on one, but if a fight goes to the ground and you are trying to submit or break your opponent and he has friends what then? you being on the ground is a guaranteed way to get your teeth knocked in. tang soo do and wing chun ARE BOTH SET FOR MULTIPLE ATTACKERS BJJ IS NOT
It's good that you are willing to look at other styles. If you get a chance look at the Leung Ting style of Wing Tsun (different spelling to Chun) it's far more effective.
I also trained in Tang Soo Do amongst other styles before and I found it to be one of the best in terms of practicality on the street. However Wing Tsun has opened my eyes to a whole new way of fighting it's applied science to the body like no other martial art I have tried.
@oufcyellows How would you know if LT WT is better than anything? Have you sparred against TWC? What is your experience to make this silly claim? (And no, I'm not a TWC member). FWIW, I've had direct experience against LT WT and I wasn't impressed. But then, maybe it was just the individual and not the system. Get the point?
@RakaiThwei Yeah, you were leading with your chin bro. bad habits of korean styled sparring (no head punches) keep the basics:your guard should be protecting a tucked chin. You let her outclass you with footwork, too. But good exhibition.
@RakaiThwei Don't listen to that guy, you look very fast and athletic in this sparring sequence. He is probably just jealous that you are getting so much face time with a girl. Keep posting sparing sequences, if more martial artists on youtube were like you this would be a better website.
or even worse, turning back kick, all the momentum from the hips just slams through the opponet. I've been victim of one to the solar plexus, you can't breath for a good 30 seconds.
i'v always refused to fight girls. in my classes i don't allow girl v guy matches unless they both agree, but i highly discourage it. i believe curious manners should continue even in a karate class. respect for the opposite sex still stands in my dojo.
But good job on sparing. work on keeping your chin down when you punch rather than anticipating an attack and leaning back. you can also work some angles, hind behind the shoulder when you jab, lean into the punch so your head is to the side. :)
It is your class so your rules as it should be. However as a girl I have to say I totally disagree and provided it is done right women will get more out of training with men and not women. Women need to understand how strong men actually are compared to them. Women who only fight/spar with other women always in my experience a dillusional idea of how good they are and how well they will fare against a male attacker in real life.
Controlled fighting v men only helps, just hand pick the guys.
I am not in total disagreement with you however you state yourself controled fighting so the guy would be holding back making it an unfair and unrealistic. Except for my wife I teach only guys so I have not had to make anyone upset. I would recomend a women practice techniques against guys to show the difference but would recomend not sparring against a guy. Besides unless there are no rules (wich can't happen) sparring isn't all that realistic, it's just as close as it can be.
I see the logic in that too. Well said. I'll be honest, I've been taking Northern Shaolin Long Fist Kung Fu for over two months now and in sparring, I've gotten my ass kicked by a 2nd degree black sash GIRL several times. Not ashamed to admit it. She's really REALLY good. Practices Praying Mantis AND Tai Chi as well.
@GabrielGroverMan The problem with refusing to spar with girls is that you rob them of the experience of training with a man. Generally, males are heavier and stronger than females and this is precisely what a female should be training to defend against.
I respect your stand for respect but , with respect, I'd suggest there are other ways to show and cultivate it than restricting mixed sex sparring.

Nice interesting video dude, nice soundtrack. Gotta work more on your footwork. What's the difference of tang soo do and tae kwon do? I'd like to learn from someone who practices it and not from the web...
MysteryMachine21 1 year ago
@MysteryMachine21
RakaiThwei 1 year ago
@RakaiThwei
That's when the real learning begins.
avanara 1 year ago
@MysteryMachine21 you find a difference even with the same style because each instructor teaches differently
smsjgoku 1 year ago

You're a nice guy.
culbriz 1 year ago
Nice one: unfortunately, without any head punches you carry on forever. Wing chun would suggest to block or deflect a first kick and go straight for the head with chain punches...
maxgaet 1 year ago
I know this is an old old video, but here you need to work on your footwork. Keep your opponent in front of you. Shes cutting off some of your angles of attack by circling around you to your back.
dogabutila 1 year ago
Not Bad from my view, good fight and all, nice, also if you were afraid to hurt someone with your kicked take the shoes off, although it would be pretty tough to kick with Wing Chuns ability to close in on their opponents, but i liked this fight it was a good show of skill on both sides.
Wariar11 1 year ago
As amateurs you should protect yourself more, head and shin protection at least! Without that the sparring has to remain "soft". Its great to have respect for the training partner, but protection is needed to reach the real "self defense level" in training. Keep up the good work. Thumb up!

Good work man its great that your tried at least and i think if you use some side kicks and front kicks to keep the opponent away you'll be pretty hard to get into.
But well done looks like you guys are trying and thats the main thing. Make sure to keep your jaw tucked harder to get knocked out that way.
Well done guys keep it up.

Also: 4)learning/understanding discipline and general respect concepts, and 5) how to properly exercise and care for the body...too.
JAWdog777 1 year ago
how prevalent is tang soo do? from how u refer to your uniform im guessing its korean (that and your kicking style), but other then tae kwon do almost any korean martial art doesnt get any mentioning. i did a year of kuk sool won myself, but unfortunately classes and work made it almost impossible to get back into it.
also, seeing a chinese style that disregards kicks above the knee vs a korean style (were kicking seems to be the lifeblood of almost any form)... it was really interesting spar
monstermorrill 1 year ago

@RakaiThwei let me first say you didn't do all that bad,but one thing I noticed is that you wait too much.what I mean by that is you're waiting for your opponent, which means you're adapting to them. That makes you predictable, which is something you don't want to be in the ring.So my advice is to stay on your toes, keep moving, make your opponent adapt to you.And don't throw just one strike, follow up,throw combinations. One strike is easier to avoid then multiple strikes.keep training =)
KingGingerbread5O 1 year ago
Nice kick to the head, you should of done more side kicks and followed up w/ a back spin hook, or back spin side, she was open for that. Also, work on your footwork more, float like a butterfly and sting like a bee, and move the head more, especially against a mostly linear hand style like wing chun, good attempt though!!

thatvideoguy1993 1 year ago
also, find your root, when you throw a punch, dont let it throw you off balance, maintain your gaurd and stance.
Aside from that, lovely fighting from both of you.
Train hard, and you'll be on your way. =]
GabbysMyKittyRawr 1 year ago
Well, to the fighter in the black, you did well, you followed WC's principles quite well, except when you changed your gaurd, keep it up, or you'll be far less effective.
To the fighter in the white, I've never practiced TSD, but I believe you did quite well, but try not to take so many punches, when you come in for close combat, you have to really be careful, you did well, just work on retracting, and blocking-
GabbysMyKittyRawr 1 year ago
I recommend you develop good footwork; its a precursor to bridging the gap between two fighters or maintaining distance to deliver devastating kicks. alternate from solid forward advances to explosive and flowing footwork to travel into the opponent back to yielding/ deflection footwork to anticipate counter attacks and mix and match depending on the angle of your opponent.

DigitalHamSandwich 2 years ago
great techniques but you should be more patient with your moves... you got the techniques but when using it you are just trying to attack.... be patient and counter then attack..... thats how wing chun should be use like self defense...... just watch master wong and you would learn so much....
CURIOUSGIAO 2 years ago
uh...
WC shouldnt be 'used for self defense'. It's a fighting style. You fight with it. And recommending that you watch a youtube dude to 'learn so much'... you have to train. Find a sifu and learn WC, thats the only way.
superbadlucre 2 years ago
@superbadlucre What superbadlucre means when he says WC shouldnt be used for self defense, is something that took me some time to understand, having trained in WC for several years. You CAN use it to defend yourself, however I think he means it's not a self defense technique or learned series of techniques to use against certain moves. Correct me, superbadlucre, if I misinterpreted your statement.

@RakaiThwei I have to agree with SandToof. I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do that I earned many years ago. That said, BJJ is such an amazing art. I feel more confident as a blue belt in BJJ, then I ever felt as a black belt.
websslinger 1 year ago
@SandToof bjj is a great style for one on one, but if a fight goes to the ground and you are trying to submit or break your opponent and he has friends what then? you being on the ground is a guaranteed way to get your teeth knocked in. tang soo do and wing chun ARE BOTH SET FOR MULTIPLE ATTACKERS BJJ IS NOT

@SandToof Not being scared of punches is just a matter of experience. I know some BJJ guys who still open up distances at the sight of punches

It's good that you are willing to look at other styles. If you get a chance look at the Leung Ting style of Wing Tsun (different spelling to Chun) it's far more effective.
I also trained in Tang Soo Do amongst other styles before and I found it to be one of the best in terms of practicality on the street. However Wing Tsun has opened my eyes to a whole new way of fighting it's applied science to the body like no other martial art I have tried.

i'v always refused to fight girls. in my classes i don't allow girl v guy matches unless they both agree, but i highly discourage it. i believe curious manners should continue even in a karate class. respect for the opposite sex still stands in my dojo.
But good job on sparing. work on keeping your chin down when you punch rather than anticipating an attack and leaning back. you can also work some angles, hind behind the shoulder when you jab, lean into the punch so your head is to the side. :)
GabrielGroverMan 2 years ago
It is your class so your rules as it should be. However as a girl I have to say I totally disagree and provided it is done right women will get more out of training with men and not women. Women need to understand how strong men actually are compared to them. Women who only fight/spar with other women always in my experience a dillusional idea of how good they are and how well they will fare against a male attacker in real life.
Controlled fighting v men only helps, just hand pick the guys.
Catsincages 2 years ago 4
I am not in total disagreement with you however you state yourself controled fighting so the guy would be holding back making it an unfair and unrealistic. Except for my wife I teach only guys so I have not had to make anyone upset. I would recomend a women practice techniques against guys to show the difference but would recomend not sparring against a guy. Besides unless there are no rules (wich can't happen) sparring isn't all that realistic, it's just as close as it can be.
SungTzu 2 years ago
I see the logic in that too. Well said. I'll be honest, I've been taking Northern Shaolin Long Fist Kung Fu for over two months now and in sparring, I've gotten my ass kicked by a 2nd degree black sash GIRL several times.
