Compared to the more recent predecessors which allowed pretty much 3 skills and just skillful handling, this game gives you a larger selection skills as well more characters to switch to and from, makes the game more of an rpg in which skills you pick to use.
Its a game that deserves praises, as so many jrpgs have been dead to me because of stagnant gameplay (turn based was too slow since ff8), games like this and ys origin really helps.

It may have a lot of skills, specials, playable characters, etc., but despite all that, it still FEELS completely old-school in action, like you're playing a SNES RPG. Intuitive and simple, yet deep.

But graphically, yes, Kingdom Hearts wallops this game.

There'll most likely be an Ys I and II remake next year for SOME system, which is obviously all you want. Falcom is trying to move the series forward with this and it looks fantastic.

I think Falcom has to move on if they want to appeal to a newer generation of players (which is probably one reason they're debuting the game on the PSP as opposed to the PC like traditionally). Sure, they can release games deliberately done in old school style but I'm not sure that's the direction they want to go to stay in the market.
'Sides, Ys VI, Felghana, and Origin didn't exactly bomb and they're pretty much in the similar style as Seven.
Oh yeah, I think multiplayer on-the-go (re: handheld system) games are generally welcomed in Japan so that's probably another reason Falcom made this move.
What about it looks "rubbish" to you? I can see the SD3 comparison, but I don't know where you're getting this "rubbish" from. Have you never played an Ys game before? They're generally REALLY FREAKING AWESOME, and this looks like no exception, to me. Looks like it'll blow Seiken Densetsu 3 away, as far as I'm concerned.
Atlus released Legacy of Ys book 1 and 2 for DS. Turbo GFX 16 Ys book is also availably for Wii VC download in the US. I dont think there is any issue to bring this over.

Sorry, it isn't. It's single-player only - you just get to switch between your party members on the fly, a la Zwei!! and Zwei 2.
Still an AMAZING game, though. Probably the best in the series.
