what a great game. I wish they would put this stuff out on todays machines with updated graphics, of course. anybody ever heard of GermDEMO? Remember that? Where can I find that?
I only saw the C=64 version of this game. The graphics look almost alike but the song sounds slightly different. The aliens also run out in a different order on the title screen.
This isn't quite the original as I know it. This one "rainbows" from the middle out to the edges. The original filled in the letters with pixels in the "rainbow" scheme, before filling all the letters later. Might make a vid sometime to prove my point. The music is awesome in simplicity, and a little off-tune, but that only adds to the genuine feel.
Nope, this intro is sped up by pressing a console key. See the response vid from mraupp. That has the speckling. That's just taken from an NTSC version, hence the speed difference.
The atari chipset had 4 voices, thus the "harmonies" in the atari version. This is most noticeable in the second part of the song, which sounds god-awful on the C64(cuz the c64 soundchip had "only" 3 voices).
Yeah, the tempo is too slow, check out the response video, it sounds about how I remember. Its amazing, I havent heard it play on a physical atari in almost two decades and I could still pick up when the emulator (which is what this video is from, Im pretty sure) was running too slow just by the speed of this intro music.
I'll never forget this theme music...I've actually found myself humming this song 20 years after playing the game....great, great game...It's no Utopia, but still way ahead of it's time.
The very best of game music electronica. Still an awesome song. If only it could be 'cleaned up' a bit with someone who has some audio mixing skills. Nevertheless, glad its here and maybe someday it'll make it to revamp.

@GamesEmotions Is this either in 50hz or played on European/PAL hardware? The tempo's slow compared to what I remember :-)

Is this running a little slow? The tempo seems off.

Just listened to the C64 theme and this one and I'm sorry, even with the SID, the Atari version is better.

Google "Atari800Win PLus" and use that emulator from the Polish site.
Also, for best results, use the OS-A (400/800) Rom images.
Google "xl search" to find the game.

Yep, I remember the main title doing that, too; "speckling" in and filling the letters.
MannPower 3 years ago
This is the Atari version. The one that speckles in is the C64 version.

The music is out of tune, which isn't really POKEYS's fault. But, what to say, the music gets more fun by beeing out of tune there...
olynxmano 3 years ago
It sounds out of tune 'cause it's playing at the wrong speed. Watch the video response for how it actually should sound.
Poops247 3 years ago
this is out of tune.
music speed is the same as the C64 version which is in tune.
C64 music is superior
