Era giovane,ed era proprio al meglio delle sue possibilita'. Gran bella emissione, acuti facili e timbrati, proprio bravo. E non ci andava nemmeno bene.....
Again, thanks for uploading this--I have been watching this fantastic clip over and over again since discovering Zancanaro recently. Who is singing Ferrando?
My first experience listening to Mr Zancanaro was a Covent Garden performance of Andrea Chenier starring Placido Domingo. Mr Zancanaro sang Gerard and his 'Nemico Della Patria' got the loudest and longest applause in the performance. At the end of Act III he had a staredown with Fouquier Tinville and he was staring THROUGH the other character. Breathtaking performance.
Wow! This is spectacular! What a voice! Zancanaro does what every great singer does. That is, he makes the very difficult sound almost effortless. What a secure tone, beautiful legato! I agree that he seems to be underrated.
I can't tell you how much I adore this clip! I hadn't encountered Zancanaro before, but I am just amazed! Sensitive singing, great technique and good acting! I am finding it hard to listen to Hvorostovsky sing this after hearing Zancanaro sing it. Thank you so much for posting!! Now I can't stop watching this clip! Is it possible to upload more from this Il Trovatore movie? I've watched the clips you have uploaded so far and would love to see more!
El legato de este baritono italiano es uno de los mas bellos y agradables entre los que se han hecho famosos en el siglo XX. Zancanaro es definitivamente un gran maestro del bel canto italiano. Bravo !
Conte: Tutto e deserto, ne per l'aura ancora Suona l'usato carme... In temp io giungo! Ferrando: Ardita opra, o signore, Imprendi Conte: Ardita, e qual furente amore Ed irritato orgoglio Chiesero a me, Spento il rival , caduto Ogni ostacol sembrava a'miei desiri: Novello e piu possente ella ne appresta... L'altare!...Ah no, non fia D'altri Leonora mai!...Leonora e mia!
I'm astonished by the ease and clarity of the legato line. Beautiful voice for sure but his focus and detail are like nothing I've ever heard from another baritone. Granted it is a recording... but damn, this clip is a gem.
Why is "Il balen" so hard to sing? Just curious. I'm not a singer and it was easier for me to sing than other baritone arias at least. Of course I still sounded horrible though.
It's mostly not hard to hit the notes. But to maintain a steady legato and to sound good in the 'Tutto e deserto' part without a great orchestra in the background is quite hard. And there are LOTS of places with absolutely no room to breath.
this aria requires a mastery of the classic baritone vocal tech-----no tricks allowed--of course music schools and teachers give out this aria to whomever regarless of strain or timbre and rubber stamp it to maintain their reputations as great voice builders, etc, it is the benchmark for Baritones, avant de quitter, di provenza, eri tu, and the macbeth aria... have a good one tony.
Leonora - Raina Kabaivanska Manrico - Franco Bonisolli Il Conte di Luna - Giorgio Zancanaro Azucena - Viorica Cortez Ferrando - Giancarlo Luccardi Ines - Gisela Pohl Ruiz - Johannes Bier Chor der Deutschen Staatsoper Berlin Staatskapelle Berlin Bruno Bartoletti, conductor The soundtrack is commercially available.
Spectacular, and such an immediately recognizable voice!! Thankfully, there is the very strong Trovatore recording under Giulini, with a glorious Domingo, and superb Fassbaender. 10 out of 10 stars for a perfect dramatic, and individualistic, rendition here.
Zancanaro was singing Amonasro at age 69 in Zurich last October, so he couldn't have been that careless with his voice.
My last experience of him live dates back to 1999, and he looked and sounded terrific at age 60, still popping out the high Gs, which strikes me as above-average longevity.
Surely THE most beautiful baritone voice after my beloved Bastianini. Zancanaro was sadly under-recorded. Apart from his wonderful di Luna for Giulini, there's not much available. What a shame.
Quick somebody throw a bucket of cold water on Ankhsnammon. She's out of control.
When I heard him in I Puritani he was having trouble with the top. The basic sound was quite remarkable. It's a very distinctive sound unlike any other.
Hahaha!! I have always found Verdi's music for baritone his most beautiful. Right in the middle of the male range. Gorgeous gorgeous arias - always. And this is arguably - or definitely among them - my favorite. FABULOUS singer of whom I had embarrassingly never heard. Thanks as always, Onegin 65!
Thanks for posting this! Am a fan of Zancanaro's but had never seen him in the pre-Scala period, so it was really great to see this - he sounds (and looks :P) utterly gorgeous. ''Il balen'' is brutally hard aria for baritons. I love Panerai's Luna as well, they both did very well singing this role, dark but still so tender.
