  • B A Robertson spoke with a fake cockney accent when it was fashionable, then reverted back to a Glasgow accent when it became cool. He should never have used a cockney accent in the first place. It showed lack of confidence in his own culture.

  • I loved this when it came out - I had just met my first love, and his name was Anthony, which is mentioned in the lyrics! Cute song - he's from Glasgow isn't he? (like me)

  • I was only 6 when this was released, but I loved it. Gr8 memories....

  • Awful

  • Never realised back then (I was a teenager at the time) just how clever the lyrics to this song are.

  • BA Robertson, Joe Dolce & Jona Lewie should get their asses in gear and form a 'super'goup. For extra stardust maybe get Bob Geldolf in on (very far back) backing vocals.

  • @bluenose1986 Good idea, but about three miles back for Geldof would be a safe distance for everyone

  • I enjoyed B A in those good old days still do. Good old top of the pops is missed

  • he looks like bruce springsteen

  • a few beers 2 in morning bopping around the boat neet club to this 79 catchy tune

  • I would like to apologise to all the B.A fans out there. And also B.A himself. I shouldnt knock him, who am I to knock B.A, good luck to him. I think I over reacted a little and for that I apologise. I still think the song is absolute shite, however, in 79 when this was out, pop music in general was absolute shite. Good on B.A for making a living out of writing drivel and getting paid for it, and I mean that with the utmost respect.

  • roy west

  • Met B A a few years back after a performance during the the Edinburgh festival. I did not truly appreciate the back catalogue and the great songs he wrote. Not only extremely talented but a nice guy and funny.

  • Near PMSL at this, hilarious!!! Was this cool or what!! "When he came back from the war, he gave what for love" -and "Antony got really angry, at old Caesar's hanky-panky", priceless!! I might still have this single somewhere.

  • @psychotweety Cliff! Mike and the Mechanics! AMAZING!

  • @RUBBERMOOG yeah i thought you'd pick up on those bits and miss the AWARD WINNING bit!!! hmmmm

  • @psychotweety good on him for winning an award, well done. He's skilled at writing bland, soulless songs I'll give him that!

  • Harsh words Rubber Moog but it's good to hear that people have an opinion.

  • How did this arsehole ever get a record deal what a complete nob this is utter shit.

  • @RUBBERMOOG fckoff then, let the rest of us enjoy it you boring cunt

  • Who was the guy on the drums at the front in the suit? I remember seeing him in other things in the late 70s/early 80s, maybe an actor?

  • I love this song xx

  • I'm a massive fan of the late 70's early 80's but my god how poor is that miming?!?!?!

  • Why is Michael J Fox playing drums?

  • @marcswales - before I saw your comment, I was about to ask the same thing!!!

  • @marcswales Can you think of a better instrument for him to play?

  • notice theyve changed it to token from toke

  • his first few singles were great.

he wrote 'in the living years' that mike and the mechanics popularised

  • Da hat dem Typen doch irgendeiner in den Kopf gekotzt, und jetzt sprudelt der ganze Dreck wieder aus seinem Maul heraus - als "Lied"! Zum Fürchten!!!

  • @thoule95

  • i used to listen to this in the car on the way to wales for a camping trip with the family when i was 5 or 6! love it :D

  • For a Scot he doesn't half sound like he's English.

  • All those years I thought he said 'Bang Bang, The Mighty Thor'

  • @darganx that would make a cool song lol

  • who put michael j fox on the drums

  • B A Robertson, Rob Brydon and that bloke off Strictly could all be triplets.

  • @Feisty1967 Yes spot on, they could be Brothers I allways said that Anton off Strictly looks like Rob Brydon , and so does B A, very funny!!!!

  • ANyone know where he is now ? Hopefully a good story. Enough with the cancer and drugs and needless deaths.....

  • paul merton crossed with michael j fox on tympani

  • @EVERTONIC

with Benny Andersson on rhythm guitar!

  • I always wondered what B A stood for. After watching this I realise it stands for Bowel Action. This is S**t

  • I remember this , this was the first digle I every bought lol....

  • Would have to have been a right sad bastard to have bought this . One of the sickest [though not the sickest] songs to hit the UK charts .

  • Why is Michael J. Fox playing timpani on this song?

  • Managed to find this on CD

  • Spotted him driving in a blue mini behind me with his missus in london today.....he has looked after himself..and he looked pretty happy too!

  • He should stop singing and stick to composing and writing songs.............he's just speaking for fuck's sake!

  • were is he now, bang bang

  • This was the first record I ever bought, hmm lol

  • Hilarious! Used to love singing along to this in front of my Dad, I don't think he worked out what it was all about. Loved 'knocked it off' too.;-)

  • A song and a history lesson, who could ask for more?

  • great song

  • is this jimmy hills long lost son

  • awfull

  • I remember the 7" single sleave folded out into a contraption that made a bang when you swung it through the air! 70's cheese - love it.

  • OMG - one of those excrutiatingly annoying songs from the 70's, that you just can't help singing along to. Conjures up a heap of memories. lol

  • Fang fang...ha ha...it's so bad but I love it. Gonna listen to Knocked It Off next. Anyone got the theme to 'Maggie'. It's got some typically clunk Robertson lyrics too but still a classic. Jock'n'Roll Ya Bam!

  • This Song Is Jizzing Material!!!!!!

  • I went with my brother to see him at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester in 197? I am so old !!! :(

  • well .. bang bang hehe

  • I was 15 1979 oh well can't last forever.

  • excellent just like kool in the kaftan

  • this really reminds me of starting high school in '79, a bit cheesy but it has feeling unlike a lot of todays shit

  • Reminds me of the very first time i heard this song in August 08.

  • @GriefTourist You are right. They are putting some of their individuality and quirkiness into it. Today's music is either total garbage (rap type stuff) or comes from people who have had to jump through all the hoops Simon Cowell has demanded they do. Today's music is a side show.

  • Quality song

  • Tongue in cheek is the phrase, nice that some pop stars dont take themselves too seriously, wrote a lot as well i believe!

  • It sold loads 19,000 have looked at it so far, nuff said

  • How shit was music back then? This was proper fuckin shite!!

  • why did you look it up then...........!

  • ferrers88, to remind myself how shit music was back then. Not heard this for 20 years. Was just interested to see it again. Is that ok with you? Do I need your permission to look at other videos Mr Nazi policeman of youtube? Dickhead!!

    hows your mom anyway ;)

  • Still dead I think.

  • he was awful, just awful.

  • TOP NOTCH song A great year for music that was unlike all the rubbish thats sung and i say loosely sung today. Its amazing this song was made without the need to "bust a cap in your arse" Do a drive by shooting take or sell drugs to your home boys "slap your bitch up" or tell the world your gay to help your record sales. At least there is one good thing about the modern rap rubbish it wont be around in 30 years time unlike classics like this still are. Great video thanks.

  • Totally agree with you. Excellent comment

  • guy fawkes special - did that fall on a Satyrday that year..?

lolly & yes thisdoes mean you...

  • No agenda here enjoy it

  • gotta love the 80's........

  • And there was me thinking it was about a revolution...

By the way - why are UKIP / BNP watching this song?

  • thanks to whoever put this on ,great song ,met my wife of 25 years the day this was on t o t ps

  • Does anyone know the name of the BA Robertson song with the lyrics "in your hands is a crumpled paper, it says 'friends now, love me later' -- I think it's the theme song for the "Maggie" tv series, but I can't find the lyrics anywhere....Thanks!

  • I remember the series growing up and remember the song, but just the Maggie....will have to do a bit of googling as it's got me beat too!

  • Hes a bit of a munter. Good song though.

  • Its labours plan to destroy England, sell it to Europe as the dump ground for waste of all kind including bacward, criminal minded human dross they dont want poluting their countrys.Brown is buying votes by having countless thousands of imigrants come to the UK where they will be given citizenship and guess what.....the VOTE. just watch and see.

  • Who can forget his foray into film and soundtrack, as seen in The Monster Club.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh what a great song, i'm 25 and love it!

  • Wasn't the original lyric "Sherlock Holmes, hello, preferred a little toke of love" ?

  • @Sparks127 - you are almost right, "alone" not "hello". Presumably alluding to sex on the BBC was OK but alluding to drugs ("toke") meant you had to change the lyric..

  • quite a clever bloke was BA Robertson, went on to pen music for the likes of Brown Sauce and Mike and the Mechanics.catchy song at the time,a bit dated now.

  • Reminds me of when I first started Secondary School in Sept '79. Now I'm a sad, flabby 41 year old mother of one. Where does the time go?
