St. Joseph RC Church, Bowling Green KY had a set of these which they used (back in the 1980's) during the consecration. Most churches that use bells in that manner have a set of non-pitched bells to alert the congregation that HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART. Hearing the priest say "He took the bread" (bing bong bing bong) "...in rememberance of me." (bing bong bing bong) always made me roll my eyes. Kinda took the solemnity out of the moment.
These were indeed sold as house calls, for dinner, etc. The NBC chimes were built similarly. An early dootbell manufacturer, Telechime, produced four-note tubular bell door chimes which also had a keyboard for manual playing, and they were provided with a songbook. Everything from classic melodies to silly made-up tunes like "Waffles This Mornning"
A friend of mine has a set of these, I want to say they're exactly the same. I sorta drove her nuts playing the Reveille music that's imprinted on the piece. Such a loud resonant sound. We thought they were perhaps from a train?
I am not sure if they are from a train. My understanding is they were sold to call people to dinner. They are also used at concert halls to let the audience know when the intermission is over.
@chickenwiretire I´m very interested on buying these same item. i´m from México but its rreally important for me to find these 5 note dinner chimes. please contact me in rodrigodelacadena@yahoo.com
