My all time favorite Chaparral. The car might have won at Daytona had Phil Hill not slid off and crashed the car. The 2F gave the Ford Mk IV fits at Sebring and generally had the fastest qualifying times at most of the endurance races in Europe. The win at Brands Hatch showed what it was capable of.
The video was taken during the formal launch of the Chaparral Gallery at the Petroleum Museum in Midland back in 2004. Jim was driving the 2F from the Chaparral shops at Rattlesnake Raceway on a public road to a waiting crowd at the Museum.
I was lucky enough to see the first Chaparral with the huge wing racing at Nurburgring in June 1966..This was a 1000 km race and Phil Hill and Joakim Bonnier won it!! Fantastic! Nothing can match the sound of a big V8 winding up...
Two weeks later, I spent 24 hours at Le Mans-watching the 7 ltr: Ford GT 40s come in first: and second places.. What a time for a young Petrolhead ...listening to the sound of them at 200+ m.p.h. I have still got my programmes and passes..
Now thats worth a big smile. I did see the Chapparal coupe at the 1967 24 Hours of LeMans, Probably my biggest racing thrill. Watched the Chapparal coming down the front straight with the wing doing its share of braking going into Turn 1. Thank to Jim Hall and the poster.
Its a wing that creates donwforce to aid during cornering and braking, unfortunately Hall had a horrrific crash which along with other wing failures led to it being banned. Hall still thinks most wing failures were due to faulty engineering and he still thinks it is a good design.
Many of the wings from that era were quite flimsy but Hall's were solid and quite effective. His accident was not caused by wing failure. He ran into the back of Lothar Motschenbacher's McLaren and flipped into the desert after Motschenbacher slowed suddenly.
actually its not a spoiler but a wing that can be altered in "realtime" and attaches directly to the axles. Too far advanced for most authorities eg F1 where Lotus etc couldn't make it work reliably, so it was banned.

American cars suck (nowadays)
look at their supercars.. Corvette, viper, FordGT..
these cars got boatloads of power, but have a horrible damper system, you cant make a fast turn in any of em.. now look at even a frigen lambo.. those things were built for handling and they never made them over -powerd.. Just right! other examples of good cars.. Audi, Bmw, Porsche, ferrari, jaguar, aston martin, and even most japanese sport models have a superior design in them. Screw america, sadly.
CAN-AM WAS THE GREATEST RACING SERIES IN THE WORLD!!!! PATIENCE, HORSEPOWER AND HIGH DRIVER SKILLS WERE THE ELEMENTS. BRUCES' CARS WERE KING!!!!! BEWARE THE ORANGE BIG BLOCK POWERED CHEVYS!!!!! o to 100mph then to o in 9.6 seconds!!!! ALMOST 4 G'S ACCELARATING AND 6G'S BRAKING!!!!! A MAN AHEAD OF EVERYONES CALIBER OF THINKING, BRUCE MCLAREN.
{ "CAN-AM WAS THE GREATEST RACING SERIES IN THE WORLD!!!!" }
No doubt about it. McLaren, Revson, Donohue, Hulme, Gurney, Hall, Stewart, etc. ....all Hall of Famers, driving most interesting (and coolest) cars of all time.
I think I'm in love all over again. :-D~ Loved these cars when they raced and wasted the big boys! LoL1 The police escort wouldn't stand a chance if he gave it even half a plate of beans!!
i met jim hall at goodwood what a guy! very easy going and felt like i knew him for years! has some really great ideas. but ya cant beat the kiwi mclarens!!
Yep, I saw the Chaparral vs. McLaren rivalry at Riverside as well. ...in '70 or '71. The Chap broke down after a couple laps, and Denis Hulme (driving for McLaren) went on to an easy win.
Vic Elford was driving the Chaparral at the race on saw at Riverside. He had the fastest qualifying time by a wide margin, but couldn't last 2 laps in the race.
And for some reason I wanna see the Chaparral logo on production car, if only to give other American automakers a run for their money OFF the track as well.
As a matter of fact, my son and I had the privilege of watching the 2D started and driven last night as part of the mandatory maintenance schedule for all of the cars on display at the museum. The car was driven around the circular driveway in front of the museum both clockwise and counter-clockwise for several minutes in each direction. These cars are national treasures and a real tribute to Jim Halls innovative genius.
McKee would also be nice on a production car for the same reasons. Also I am from chicago, and so was McKee. I like that. :) Not to many makes that headquarted here. The only others I can think of are the 1951 excalibur j and the tucker torpedo.

Thrill to see this car on the front straight of LeMans in 1967, flipping the wing as an airbrake, with the modified powerglide transmission and 427 plus Chevy big block.
