@xKing5991x A few years ago I played it on Windows Vista and it worked flawlessly - and I saw that there is a new website called gogDOTcom or goodoldgamesDOTcom - they patch all old games that they work on new operation systems like Windows 7 and stuff :)
@DaBossk the graphics were not bad, but they were not "really good", in his times quake2 was around you know, THESE were really good graphics ;) , and remember that what make your pc graphics faster is not only your machine, is also how good optimized the game engine is.
Does anyone of you guys know a way to get THIEF 1 and THIEF 2 working on a modern computer? i tried many methods, fixes available on the internet, and stuff like that. Nothing works...it's hard to consider this game Dead. Any help will be appreciated
@RefGod87 i dont know about the discs version. but you can buy thief gold as a digital download from good old games for 9.99 and they have made it compatible with new versions of windows. i am playing it on windows 7 with no issues. they are supposed to be releasing thief 2 as well in the future. website is "gog" dot com. they sell older PC classics and they are completely DRM free :)
@RefGod87 no problem, it is a great site... they also have thief II for download now by the way, they released it a few days after my original post to you
@RefGod87 oddly enough, i get thief2 to work but no thief1, for thief2 to work i right click on the exe and set compatibility mode to win98 and run as a administrator, thief 1 also executes but i get a black screen on the menu game :( i'm gonna try to use VirtualBox with a win98 i really want to play it again....
i played this when i was way too young and after completing this mission i met a zombie that chased me and i was too scared to ever play again :( but i did play TDS when i was older and enjoyed it thoroughly :D
@samantha34ize Yes you could get it to work but it's a little tricky. There is a thread on the thief forum about it (do a search for through the looking glass thief forum on google).
It doesn't always work perfect either, sometimes id exits to windows unexpectedly, atleast it does on my computer.
Me and two of my friends played the demo of this game like a hundred times or something like that back in the days, just to make the guards and the "gay-chefs" say new things and man that was fun! Then I bought the whole game and got very disapointed that there were monsters in the game. I think that they should've kept it the same way as the first part (Lord Bafford's Manor) was. You're a thief after all and shouldn't be killing monsters >_<
@RandyVanSchon I agree in every word. So great this game is, so annoying are all those beasts and strange human-like, well, creatures. At least the number of beasts was reduced in the second part, but still annoying. Zombies are fine, though, when appearing in small numbers and only in dungeons or a lost cathedral. I hate games with too much creatures or creatures at all. :)
@Brummbrummquietsch I haven't seen much of the rest of the game since I remember that I just played a little further after I ran into a zombie. The zombies literally killed the feeling of the game for me. I just loved to hide in the darkness and "spy" when I was a little kid and this game gave me the chance to do that again without feeling stupid that is. I also remember playing the first Splinter Cell game and I just loved it! I really hope that they skip the monsters/creatures in Thief 4! :)
This game is amazing and brings back so many old memories! I remember playing this first level over and over again, and i always knocked the guard out and threw his body down the well :P
@C30PNR Seems like me and my friends are not the only ones that played the first level over and over again :) Haha I remember doing that too many times :D
lol @ 2:32 - In all the years I've been playing this game, I never knew about the hidden water and broad arrow hidden in that corner!! Freaking crazy!!!
"What'd they do? Just... bump into each other?" I remember the first time I ever heard that as a kid. I laughed so hard. To this day, I still giggle a little at it. Those guys at the front door are the best.
I loved this game as a kid. I would do the exact same thing!!! I always found the conversation in the beginning fascinating! This game needs a complete remaster using the frostbite 2.0 engine. But keep the mood and theme the same and slightly tweak the intro and cut scenes for a more in game dynamic. Also when released as a reboot include this masterful original as a free download.
I love this game ... It shaped me as a child ... since I was 11 I played it ... and it fascinated me so ... Garrett and the story is so unfathomable, mysterious and mystical ... there is no other game that can keep up because of the atmosphere and depth ... I just love it.
@RosenJeanette Even when, I would not notice it, since I'm German, too. =D But you're right. One of the best games ever and I remember when it came out - I almost played it every day. Kinda addicted. Aber hey, warum schreibe ich eigentlich auf Englisch, wenn keiner von uns richtig Englisch kann? =D
@RosenJeanette eaxctly how I would've put it, many ppl now a days dont know that Thief was and still is, and how it paved the way for many games now a days. I feel so passionate when someone asks me what Thief is about, I get so excited to tell them, the story lines, then music, sounds, environments are remarkable, I will never forget Thief. I 1st purchased back in 98 when I was 13,I have them all, and their making a Thief 4, I cannot wait, Theif is a game Ill keep forever its that good.

@Rrazk I think it will but you will have to do a lot of modifying and changing some settings. For example this game doesn't work well when the computer is running on multiple processors and so on. @EmoandDevil12 In thief 1, food was meant for a role-playing purpose. Its to show you how Garrett gets to feed himself. There is only one fruit in thief the dark project that is able to heal, and thats the purple fruits that Constantine grew to make his whiskey. In thief 2, regular food start having healing abilities. Cheese, apples, bread and sausages.
@Soundtrack1000 Well I dont know, since I'm just the uploader, but I can say that both THIIEFs run on WindowsXP, even on WindowsVista. (Tried that by myself)

@Shady2viewer Unfortunately they werent included in this walkthrough. I uploaded them seperately on my channel, but I didnt make a playlist of them, neither did I added them on the correct place in the playlist. Lazy me :P
I remember playing this game when I was about 6 or 7 years old... I never got the story or anything, I just LOVED to play it.
But I never got past Mission 2 because I was so freakin' afraid of those... dunno, "Zombies" in the mines down there. Everytime I saw them I paused the game and quit it xD
hahahahaha yea man i know wat u mean. i used to get scared as shit when i would encounter those zombies in the mines. i never got passed level 2 either
@Muskelman19 Pretty Much the same here haha, my dad played this when I was 6-7 ish so I played up to the "zombie" part and got scared and it got too hard for me, then I've just got into them properly now that I'm 20 haha, the best stealth games ever imo.
I played this when i was 4. When i was on this first mission, i just stormed in the building with the 3 guards and tried to kill them and i died....of course.
@thejordan01 Which level featured the demo of T1? I remember the demo of T2, which featured a great castle / mention, and the level started nearby, on the roofs. When I'm not mistaken, this level wasnt in the final version of the game, though :(
u know this was the first M for mature game that I have ever played. In this level I went into the building with the three guards and they killed me and it scared the cr@p out of me....I was 4...lol. Cant wait till Thief 4 comes out.
I was going to mix in the video briefings like I did for Thief 2, but it was my first upload to archive, and I wasn't entirely certain that the entire project would get shot down for having Rustmonkey's stuff in there. So I put all the briefings into a separate clip so I could just delete that instead. Obviously, now, I wish that I had put the briefings onto the front of each mission.
@Soundtrack1000 Definitely. Well I personally like Thief 2 the METAL AGE more. Less zombies and those robots are really cool. Plus, more pickpocketing.
Even now, this game manages to offer a fairly unique and high quality experience that you really can't get from most other stealth games (Cough*MetalGearSolid*Cough).
Yeah well, i like Metal Gear Solid , even if it's only for snakes voice (lol) but thief is the best stealth game I've seen out there, and most of all i like the atmosphere best. It's sinister, black and stylish, and it's containing horror or at least elements of it. also the thingy with the seeing stone is cool, not like in oblivion or fallout 3 where it only says if you're spotted or not, here you know when they CANT spot you and thats really good. the game relies on it
I love this game so much. Looking Glass Studios knew how to make a BADASS game back then.. but today's games rather focus on graphics and physics and all that crap. which makes them disregard GAME ATMOSPHERE.
My dark project crashes, I dont know why. I have a new pc and in my old pc worked well, but on the new crashes when i start playing. Somebody could help me? This is a great game.
So when I'm not mistaken, you have two CPUs. Try this: Start the game, hit Alt+Tab, open TaskManger, search the process "thief.exe", right click and tell him only to use ONE cpu. So uncheck all but one and go back to game and voila! Worked fine for me, hope you have the same result =)
Bit late replying..but for me the processor trick with task manager works, if it still crashs after that right click on whatever application you use to boot thief up, a shortcut or so will do and click properties, go to the compatibility tab and tick the box for run this application in compatibility mode in windows 2000, some people say windows 98 compatibility mode worked for them but give them all a try with one processor running and it hopefully it'll work for ya :).
Well, the HP Shields don't look like shields at all in the video. All I see are tiny little ticks/tally marks/lines. I just upgraded my copy of Thief Gold with graphic mods, but the shields aren't that small...
PS: I use 1280 x 1024 resolution. Do you use some kind of EXTREME resolution like 1900 x 1200, or 4096 x 2160?
@ Brummbrummquietsch are you playin this on a new version of windows or mac or are you using windows 95 or 98 cause thats what i had the game on.

thejordan01 2 years ago
@thejordan01 Which level featured the demo of T1? I remember the demo of T2, which featured a great castle / mention, and the level started nearby, on the roofs. When I'm not mistaken, this level wasnt in the final version of the game, though :(
Brummbrummquietsch 2 years ago
Ah the nostalgia. I used to play this in the early 2000s when I was 11 and so.

Bijoux304 2 years ago
u know this was the first M for mature game that I have ever played. In this level I went into the building with the three guards and they killed me and it scared the cr@p out of me....I was 4...lol. Cant wait till Thief 4 comes out.
Posterdude95 2 years ago
are there cheat codes for this game (cuz i have it) like invincibility? or trainers?

I was going to mix in the video briefings like I did for Thief 2, but it was my first upload to archive, and I wasn't entirely certain that the entire project would get shot down for having Rustmonkey's stuff in there. So I put all the briefings into a separate clip so I could just delete that instead. Obviously, now, I wish that I had put the briefings onto the front of each mission.

Call me a wimp, but the overall atmosphere is quite creepy 0_0

The thief games are great at doing that. Even when it's not meant to be creepy, it is. :P

Soundtrack1000 2 years ago
@Soundtrack1000 Definitely. Well I personally like Thief 2 the METAL AGE more. Less zombies and those robots are really cool. Plus, more pickpocketing.

I really appreciate you including the conversations between the guards and such. Great upload, thanks!

taschkahn 2 years ago 2
Even now, this game manages to offer a fairly unique and high quality experience that you really can't get from most other stealth games (Cough*MetalGearSolid*Cough).
They should put this on steam.
ArbitraryWater 2 years ago
I cant believe they didn't
ComradePepper 2 years ago
Yeah well, i like Metal Gear Solid , even if it's only for snakes voice (lol) but thief is the best stealth game I've seen out there, and most of all i like the atmosphere best. It's sinister, black and stylish, and it's containing horror or at least elements of it. also the thingy with the seeing stone is cool, not like in oblivion or fallout 3 where it only says if you're spotted or not, here you know when they CANT spot you and thats really good. the game relies on it
Samael16661 2 years ago
I love this game so much. Looking Glass Studios knew how to make a BADASS game back then.. but today's games rather focus on graphics and physics and all that crap. which makes them disregard GAME ATMOSPHERE.
And Thief always was BEST at exactly that!

If you think *your* English is bad, than you havent not yet heard of mine *lol*
Does your new machine has dual-/quadcore or stuff like that?

Look: Here is my pc :P
Intel Core 2CPU 4400 2.00Ghz

Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT 512 MB
telmosps 2 years ago
So when I'm not mistaken, you have two CPUs. Try this: Start the game, hit Alt+Tab, open TaskManger, search the process "thief.exe", right click and tell him only to use ONE cpu. So uncheck all but one and go back to game and voila! Worked fine for me, hope you have the same result =)
Brummbrummquietsch 2 years ago
Yes , I have done that, but when I press play mission, the screen turns black and stays black. lol

But now I can play. Thanks :D

thx
Arcadia117 2 years ago
Bit late replying..but for me the processor trick with task manager works, if it still crashs after that right click on whatever application you use to boot thief up, a shortcut or so will do and click properties, go to the compatibility tab and tick the box for run this application in compatibility mode in windows 2000, some people say windows 98 compatibility mode worked for them but give them all a try with one processor running and it hopefully it'll work for ya :).

Perhaps my favourite video game of all time. Thanks for sharing.
Teleni6548 3 years ago
are you sure its plays on vista? i have acer aspire 5735z...
34532525 3 years ago
For some reason, your HUD looks different from mine. Did you use any mods? HP Shields and the Light Gem seem smaller...
BTW: This video might've been a bit late...
GuardianDuo 3 years ago
Sorry couldnt say that, just uploaded this stuff. If its just smaller it might be just a higher resolution...
Brummbrummquietsch 3 years ago
Well, the HP Shields don't look like shields at all in the video. All I see are tiny little ticks/tally marks/lines. I just upgraded my copy of Thief Gold with graphic mods, but the shields aren't that small...
PS: I use 1280 x 1024 resolution. Do you use some kind of EXTREME resolution like 1900 x 1200, or 4096 x 2160?
GuardianDuo 3 years ago
No, I, formyself, just play on a 1280x1024 and my HP-shields are not that tiny. Maybe it also depends on the graphic card / the support of it.
Strange thing is the loot-numbers and the name of the weapon is as big as here but not the shields =/
Brummbrummquietsch 3 years ago
What system are you running it on
bobthesmasher 3 years ago
Currently on my ACER Aspire M3200 rig with Windows Vista, runs just perfectly without problems (after telling the game using only one CPU).
Brummbrummquietsch 3 years ago
Mine runs, but he graphics are terrible. If I try and run some of the options it crashes, oh well..
