  • Huge sound..

  • That's sounds great, it difficult to tell, but the other demos I've seen of the TS9 or 808 don't sound give that SRV sound; sort of smooth but hard edged.

You reckon only vintage pedals give this?

  • @cabaretampere

Vintage pedals HELP, but are not extremely different from reissues. Vintage will give a better sound, but 90% of why this demo is different then other demos, is this one is showing the proper way to use these pedals. Taking an already blisteringly loud and cranked amp, and pushing it over the top. Most demos of tubescreamers have relatively clean amps and rely on the TS to give all the drive. That creates a raspy thin fizzy sound that is unusable IMO.

  • IMHO the TI RC4558 Malaysian opamp is smoother more tube like compared to the original JRC 4558D , you can hear it in gamedojo's demo ,I have collected a version of each in 808, not TS9 and they all sound amazing and all slightly different,

The only difference between an 808 and a TS9 is 2 resistor values, very easy to mod

SRV also used a Crowther Hotcake towards the end of his career, another great pedal

    regards

    FAF

  • I have mainly vintage Maxon OD808's which are exactly the same pedal as the Ibanez TS808.

The Ibanez' were export models made by Maxon for the international market, the Maxon OD808 was made identical by them for the domestic Japanese market. I have a version 1 OD808 which is pre Ibanez and it's circuit has "2" totally different opamps, It's a little crunchier than the Version 2 808 (Ibanez TS808) . I have both original JRC and TI RC4558 equipped 808's

  • Which of your TS"s do you prefer? I got my first 84 TS9 with the JRC and its freakin awsome. I also got the klon centaur, and run my tube screamer after it. I'm thinking of getting the malaysian chip 808 though just to have that extra happen, and a TS-10 down the road, cuz I know SRV started playing TS10s the most late in his career. Between the 808 malaysian and JRC TS9, what are the main differences, and which colors your tone the most?

  • @FenderAmpFreak wait, there is NO JRC4558? For example, I'm looking at a chip that says 4558D JRC With 4141 beneath the JRC on the bottom right of the chip. Is that an original?

  • @okamasphere yes mate , that's an original :)

  • @okamasphere

there is no JRC4558, there is JRC4558D - the originals had a 4 number serial on the bottom right, the JRC4558D reissue (made in different factory) have a 5 digit code and aren't as smooth as the earlier ones.

There is also JRC4558DD in the reissue range, though I've never heard one

  • Whats the difference between the JRC4558 and JRC 4558D?

  • nice demo, but do you playing anything besides srv?

  • @okamasphere

Not in this demo... but I play only one SRV song in my cover band.

Most want to hear SRV type jamming with a tubescreamer demo since he's probably the most famous user of such devices.

  • Typo below :- JRC chip, not NRC , regards FenderAmpFreak

  • Awesome demo, thanks for putting it together, just one note ,your '81 ts808 with NRC chip has a serial number starting with 1, making an '81,'79's start with a 9, '80's start with a 0, and '81's start with a 1, as I said awesome demo , regards FenderAmpFreak

  • Finally someone did it... this is the only legitimate demo of vintage tubescreamers on youtube from someone that knows how to play and operate their amp and pedals. Thank you Tyler.

  • DANG. A vintage strat with Texas Specials into a vintage TS9 pushing a Plexi type amp into overdrive. Now THAT is how you get tone! Amazing.

  • ts808 sounds a little smoother. But none of them sound bad

  • Great demo, thanks. Now I know which one to buy :-)

  • tasty chops brutha!

  • great demo, and superb playing. Good work

  • Yeah!

  • Beautifully full tones and some great playing, dude.

    Great video.

  • They all sound nice

  • dude u sound awesome! I cant wait for my ts808 now!!!

  • I used my original 808 to get more distortion out of my shitty old 23 watt Malaysian Panaramic tube amp because I wanted to be able to have gain like Eddie Van Halen and George Lynch did when I was copying them in the 80's. SRV was a new artist and very few people even knew he used a couple of TS-808 to get his awesome blues tone. Those were the days, and I sure miss them.

  • I personally appreciate the TS-808 more. I recently bought the handwired version and it is the closest thing to the old Maxon 808's they made for Ibanez in the early 80's. But the standard reissue TS-808 is fantastic too. These OD pedals are built to last, I still have an original TS-808 I got in 1983. It still works as good as they day I bought it new from a music store. I think its so funny how SRV discovered the 808 and popularized it.

  • I think ALL of these clips sound fantastic. I will admit, the TS-9 does have a little harsher and more treble-oriented tone when it is used stock and not modded when compared to the TS-808 vintage or reissue. BUT, that being said; I think most players split the proverbial cunt hair when it comes to most of these tonal differences. You use a couple of TS-9's instead, try turning down your amps treble and boost your low and mids more. Back the tone pot on the pedals down a bit.

  • what pickups you using?

  • @meshedintervals

Texas Special in the neck pickup with windings taken off by me...

  • @gamedojo

how many vindings do tou take off? heard jesse davey takes of about 500..

  • @gamedojo Hey, your examples are the best I've found on here. Thanks for posting them. You play fantastic. I wish you could put a tip jar on here for taking the time to do this.

  • love it
