That's not really true; there is a history of anti-black sentiment all over the country. The KKK, for example, had a large following in southern Vermont. It's just a different atmosphere down south than up north. I've lived in both places, and prefer my New England, but the south hold a special place in my heart.

I'm a Yankee at heart, but I spent a good portion of my childhood living and visting relatives in the South before settling in Vermont as an adolescent. I love New England and couldn't imagine living anywhere else, yet the South is an awesome place to visit. I still have a sister who lives down there, and I love visiting her down there. Personally, I like my Christmases white and I get made fun of for my New England accent, but I love it down there.
