A cover is when a band (Evanescence) takes a song from another band (Nirvana) and sings it their way with their own style. Amy (the singer) can't match Nirvana's sound because of the way she was trained; she was trained to be an opteretic singer. At least she tried. When I first clicked, I expected something, much, much worse. It's a tribute to Niravana - so don't hate.
Both versions this and the original, are excellent by their own merit's, Nirvana's has that great grunge sound while EV captured a true vocal style that truly fits this song.
Nirvana and Evanescence are my favorite bands, so seeing Evanescence cover a Nirvana song is awesome :D. Even though Nirvana's version is still way better :P.

Why does it never occur to ppl that most people don't cover a song because they think they're better or want to disrespect the original band, but because they really love the song and want to openly show how much they like the band they're covering. This is where the pseudonym Poppy Z-Brite who wrote Courtney Love's bio came from. The paper flowers were from the song "Imaginary" which I wrote and performed by Evanescence. When I met Kurt in May '83 he was on roadcrew for Def Leppard's Rock Till You Drop Tour promoting Pyromania. Def Lep had been opening for Billy Squier which ended in Seattle & Oregon in April '83

The idea to write Heart Shaped Box came from the character Blanche in Tennessee William's play A Street Car Named Desire. Blanche had a heart shaped box with a seahorse pin. This is also why Kurt Cobain drew a seahorse in his journal.
No one can top Kurt, but Amy Lee has a beautiful voice and she comes pretty damn close. Besides, wouldnt a female singing a song originally recorded by a guy sound slightly different anyway? I definitely couldnt see Evanescence covering something like In Bloom or Come As You Are, but Heart Shaped Box, I have to say I am pleasantly surprised it works.

Holy wow I didn't even know that there was a cover of Heart-Shaped Box. I prefer the original opposed to this, though Amy is much easier to understand then Kobain. I do really love Evanescence, probably moreso then Nirvana (though they're amazing). I'm just not feelin' Amy on this one.

@HelenaPaparizou4ever- Because I'm entitled to my opinion. I mean, honestly, I know I suck at singing. I'm just a guitarist/screamo vocalist in my band, and I can't do clean vocals for crap. But I don't think her voice fits the song. I just don't like her voice sometimes. She has a beautiful voice, but it doesn't work for me on this one. :S

Amy Lee's voice is awesome and the fact that her version is acoustic doesn't mean it's worse or better than the original. Kurt and Amy sing it in different ways, so yeah you could say that you like Kurt's version more, but when you talk about being disappointed, well dude, you're off.. Where do you see tha destruction?
