Its true up to 34 seconds. Patriotism should instead be: we have it better lets spread it around and show people that our way of doing things leads to a better life. Patriotism - or indeed any aspect of sociology or anthropology - lead in practice to this divide whereby one choice leads to manipulation and evil and another to persuasion and good. To say that patriotism is for scoundrels is wrong but to say it is for saints is wrong as well - it is how it is used.

similarly you can go to the next level - I'm a British patriot, I love our ability to compete against much larger countries in sport, invention, discovery et.c. our history the fact we are the centre of modern law and birthplace of modern democracy, the first empire ever to ban slavery and slave trading, the NHS and the BBC. However I hate chavs, knife crime, the BNP (nazis), stupid banking laws, totalitarian police, idiotic politicians and bloody awful news media et.c.

Abe and JKF were INCHARGE of a country. What possible benefit would they have in decrying patriotism? To tackle the point more head-on the great men you refer to fight for the world against inequality and evil in their sight. They might be patriots but that is a co-incidence not a cause of there greatness. Patriotism can stand in the way of self examination and for oppression. But use it wisely and with good humour and it can unite us in our darkest times. "Ask not what ..."

You are not using the word "biased" in a way I can understand. I think you must mean that I oppose their actions. I think the problem here is that you have imagined a conspiracy of world governance which - even if true - will take many hundreds of years to impose effectively. Then, even if they are successful humans tend to react badly to these kinds of plots, guillotine badly. Humans kick arse, so don't worry so much :)

This SHORT clip makes a valid point. Patriotism is really arrogance and ignorance in reality. In order to be "patriotic", you must think your country is better than others. I like the IDEA of American life - but the fact is america is a bully in the world. That is not right. Stop the war, stop the hate, end the fighting!

I disagree. What is wrong with the idea that you are proud of your particular country and their accomplishments? Patriotism doesn't necessarily mean arrogance, etc. One can be patriotic, and not necessarily inhabit any of the other traits shown in this video.
Furthermore, anyone from any nation can be patriotic. Germans, Swedish, Brazilian. To be patriotic is to love one's country. Patriotism isn't limited to Americans....

I didn't say patriotism was ONLY American. But, America is a GREAT example of why "patriotism" is not good. Many people have bought the government's story for years. Look where we are. We are engaged in two wars (which will never really end), and most people still think that other countries pick on us. America is a bully on the world stage. And those who think that "war can bring peace", obviously haven't studied their history.

It seems to me if your particular spot is superior to the others than patriotism isn't required; reason and evidence should show this to be the case. If patriotism, as described by webster, is required to be mindless and obstinate then it's always going to be false, stunting and dangerous.
It seems to me patriotism held hand in hand with reason can't tolerate scoundrels, but mindless patriotism can tolerate nothing but scoundrels.
The difference is reasonable people make their spots better.

Hello, title says it all... It's Pariotism for SCOUNDRELS! not the whole world, just the people that twist it into a weapon. Patriotism can exist without it being ignorantly prejudice, but alot of people make it that way. Just like they make a million other things that way. Religion, Race, God, even sexual fucking preference. Some people are just desperate to fight, and they'll use any excuse they can get their grubby little fists on, you know?
