For what it's worth, this is just one of the Goldberg Variations. (There were 30 of 'em in Bach's suite.) But hey, there's no denying Mike and Chris do a swell job!
Very impressive! Hello to Frank Kennedy in the good ol' US of A. Good one, Frank! Frank recommended this clip. Best wishes from Jarrahnut (Big Hugh from Mundlimup). Cheers!
They dont make music like this anymore and never will. Bach was beyond what mortal man can reach. But I love seeing people play his music with such supreme command and mastery. I think Thile and Marshall just made a new fan =)
That is just joyous music. They seem to be quite pleased to be playing it, and they are doing a great job of it, too. So glad I found this post. Thanks.
For as much as I like the idea of a mandolin "family" of instruments - like with the violin - the lower pitched instruments do not sound natural. I feel they created instruments for the sake of another instrument - the mandolin - which did quite well without any younger brothers.
The C of the bowed viola is not the same as the plucked C of the mandola. The former is the instrument's hallmark, and it is a pleasure to hear it drawn. On the mandola, it is the weakest course. You have to be carefull to pluck it just to make it seem related to the other three courses - like it's coming from the same instrument.
You don't seem to understand, not simply in this video, but in all instances. Thile has better technique, speed, and improv. My comment had nthing to do with this video in particular.
Marshall's influence on Thile is quite evident. Go back to his earlier works and playing "clean" was Thile's goal. Marshall has that Dawg style, jazzy, making the notes talk thing going. After two albums with Mike, Chris is clearly a better player than he was before.
Very Good...it;s like they are dancing together.

Amazingly well recorded, well shot too. This is what I show my friends who want to know what mandolin is all about.

That's wonderful. Sounds better on mando than on harpsichord! One of my favorite Goldbergs, too. Thanks for posting.

What tremendous talent!
I've never not been enraptured by watching Chris Thile play the mandolin. He has such an awesome gift...
(Mike Marshall too, I'm sure; just never seen him live. :) )

Even so, I think the mandola has a beautiful timbre, but hey, I'm a violist, so I may be slightly biased!

Thile is so much better than Marshall it's not even funny.
In my humble opinion.

Put it this way. If Mike Marshall is second, then third is a long fucking ways away.

Keep in mind that Mike is playing the BACKING part, Chris the lead. Of course this therefore showcases Chris.

Each musician is playing his part exactly as written.

If they switched instruments it would sound they same.

My two favorite musicians playing one of my favorite composers. However, Michael Jonathan, the worst host and musician of any "show" of all time.

This is such good stuff.
Mandolins must be a really tiny niche for this not to have 130000 hits instead of 1330.
Hits the spot for me however.

Thanks for the tip. I will check it out.
We saw him and Catherine Lichtenberg play in Berkeley in December. That was amazing.
