The diesel engine behind 844 is used primarily for braking because electrical braking is more powerful and efficient than air-operated shoe brakes, by themselves. Electric braking is achieved by reversing the poles on the diesel engine's wheel motors, making them act as generators, which creates powerful drag and the resultant braking action. The electricity generated by the motors in generator mode is routed thorugh heavy electrical conduits to roof-mounted resistor units.
@KB1RMA The diesel is in this lineup to supply electricity to the excursion cars. They could have included a Diesel Generator car but the engine gives them a little more flexablity. When they are not showing off, the diesel can pull with about %20 efficiency where the best the steam engine can do is 8 or 9 percent. Both engines are burning diesel. There aren't enough places along the route to load coal so the 844 was converted to diesel some time ago.
Yes I am a rail former. I love the UP844 and I am a ham radio operator KD0EBP when I go on trips with my dad OK N0HCK I will use his ham radio to listen to the area railroads to find any train action and get pics of the train. Good job on all pics of the 844
We have the New Haven KY rail museum down the road from us here and in summer they run the L&N #152 steam engine from New Haven to Boston KY and it's terrific to see, great to ride on as a passenger. There are a bunch of vids of 152 on Youtube as well.
So you did end up getting shots of the 844 steam train in the Feather River Canyon. I followed the train all through the Canyon from Poe to Portola. You had to have been standing almost right next to me when you shot that Keddie Why bridge shot because I shot the train from almost the same angel.
Cool vids you got of 844 in the canyon. You can check you my 844 Steam Feather River Canyon vids on my youtube account when you have the chance.
I drove that truck and license plate cross country from Carson City, Nevada area to just east of Chicago and its nuts how many people all across the country were constantly stopping me asking me about it especially the further east I got when you start seeing less and less Nevada license plates in states like in Missouri and Indiana.
For those of you reading the above comment I am refering to the license plate in this vid as that is my silver Toyota Tacoma and license plate in this vid.
Same thing when I was stationed in Las Vegas 1977 to late 1980 and used to head back to Chicago to visit family. Then in Dec 80 we had orders to Iceland so we went to Phoenix to vist wife's family then to Chicago and Benton Harbor MI to see more family, then stopped Bayonne NJ to ship the car - constantly had people asking us about Nevada and Las Vegas especially on east coast. Vegas is too grown up and crowded now compared to 1980.
Omg that looks just like the mc cloud railway bridge

Foamers are people who only see a train when its a steam engine or a model railroad! Not true railfans

great video. The shot down the tressel at 2:28 reminds me of Stand By Me when Wil Wheaton turns around to see the smoke coming around the corner.

@KB1RMA To supply electrical power to the excursions cars. Steam engines do not generate enough electricity to run the AC on these cars, etc.

Why do they always have diesel locomotives as DPU's? To me, that kind of spoils the illusion as an old-school steam train.
lordbemylight 1 year ago
there is a tour with this locomotive on September 23rd 2010 which I will chase.
