Mindraker1: the beard is a legion Traddition years, finally in the body of Engineer frightened of the Foreign Legion. sos Napoleon1 because all the sappers had beards. is a Traddition. So the engineers of the Legion, grow a beard, a partire of the feast of cameron, French defeat in Mexico

Sorry, but for the man carrying the axe at their shoulders, the French word is Pionnier (also known as Sapeur in French, in English, sapper or combat engineer).
oldmamasan, allow me to correct, Pionniers, not Pioneers. A pionnier, synomim, sappeur, is a sapper combat engineer.
They are placed at the head of the troops, an old tradition that goes back to Napoleon and the Great Army. Those Pionniers were placed at the head of the marching armies, to clean obstacles in roads, etc.
No, pioneer is correct (in English, that is). Some units of the Indian Army (during British rule) had that title. As you say, they are now generally titled combat engineers.
I don't know if you know it but the rhythm and the number of steps in the marchs of the foreign legion is differentes of the other troops of French Army and especially the same and directly inspired and copied from that of the "Imperial Guard" of the 1st Empire (and Napoleon 1st) :-)
For example watch one of my videos on a march of the Imperial Guard of 1st Empire ;-)

legioners were originally recruited in switzerland and at that time the swiss marched at 1/2 cadence then regular troops maybe it had something to do with going up and down the mountains. anyway out of tradition the legion continues to march at that cadence and as a result they are always last in any parade.
French Foreign Legion was created in 1831 by the king of France. The first legionaries was recruited in Paris, they was european foreign refugees in Paris, and some criminals. Their cadence isn't 1/2 of the regular troops.
They march at 88 steps/minute, the rythm of the french monarchic troops. They have conserved this tradition. The republican troops march at 122 steps per minute.
Legionaries were never recruited from swiss.
Created by french king and always recruited in France.
to aramificate ref legioners with aprons. it goes back to the 18th century each company had a pioneer who was expected to march at the head of the regiment and clear the way for those who followed. they carried axes to cut trees and wore aprons to protect their uniforms and they were permitted to wear bears as in warfare their task was considered more arduous. many of them became qualified carpenters.
Does anyone know the purpose of the aprons on the legion soldiers? from their place of honour and other items of their uniforms, it is obviously a mark of distinction. I am sure like the Legion itself it has historical significance. thank you
The Foreign Legion, really a honorable Unit. With long history and what i like most, they are open for everyone who will join and serve the french Country. There will be only one, one of the best Units in the World!

Die ganze Militärsache is ein Haufen Scheiße, genau wie jegliches anderes Militär. Nutzloser Dreck.
Aber Militärparaden sind immer wieder geil, warum entwickelt man nicht ne Sportart, die damit zu tun hat?
