Unlike TOTP, which wouldn't survive today, I think ITV should bring The Chart Show back - although they'd have to update the graphics! I know today we have specialist music channels, but The Chart Show had Rock Top 10's, Indie and Dance and the official top ten.
The later intro didn't have the wow factor of the original 80s CGI, they'd obviously spent far less money on it. Odd choice of fonts too I always thought, Copperplate Gothic doesn't exactly scream "modern" to me. (Although it did suit WWTBAM)
On the final episode of The Chart Show, they stated Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love was the first artist to appear on the first episode. In fact, they got it wrong, because the first artist who appeared on the 11th April 1986 episode was INXS "What You Need". The Robert Palmer video they had on the last episode came from the 2nd May 1986 episode. The proof is in the HUD. Also I've seen the first ever episode of The Chart Show at the B.F.I in London and also several more episodes there.
The BFI have an archive viewing service, but they only allow film students or researchers to use it. I had to pretend that I was a researcher and then I emailed them, that I needed to view some chart show episodes for a project. They fell for it immediately and set an appointment for me to view the episodes. I saw the episodes couple of weeks ago. It took them a lot of time to set up the appointment, but it was worth at the end !!!
I wonder why they claimed that Robert Palmer was the first video though, they must have been able to check, and know the clip they showed wasn't from the first episode...
I guess they probably couldn't convert the tapes of the early episodes in time. However its all speculation. The BFI took some time to make an appointment for me to see the tapes, because they stated on the email that they needed to convert 1" film into something that is compatible to VHS or DVD. That maybe why the chart show probably couldn't show the clip of the first episode on the 22nd August 1998. But I could be wrong.
Also thats probably why they lied and said Robert Palmer was the first artist, even though it clearly wasn't by the proof of the HUD. I guess they needed something to put on the end of the episode.
I never liked CDUK, because it was just like a Top of the Pops programme, where you could only hear mainstream music. At least the chart show showed specialist music like rock, indie and dance !!!!
I didn't think CD:UK was that bad, for the first few years anyway, it got dreadful over the last few years though. Like you say, it was far too commercial though, The Chart Show always gave reasonable air time to other types of music.
CD:UK ok for about a month but then lost it, chart show had less mainstream stuff in it's countdowns.
I think now this whole 'reality show' pop idol tripe that fires pointless pop stars at everyone is a step backwards, but then that makes me unpopular.. then again I never was so.... :)

I was too young to remember the Chart Show so I'm more of a cd:uk kind of person. I generally prefer presenters to out of vision.

Still remember this last show, I made my Dad tape it, watched it to death then it 'went missing'. Lol I was only 10 :P
