Sherman had good space compartments, ammo storage, a good 75 that later was upgraded to 76, had excellent suspension and could be modified to kill even the pigsty known as T-62.

Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor surprised him and forced him to make that fatal decision. His mistake was in thinking that if he also declared war on the US, Japan would reciprocate by attacking Russia from the east...thus dividing Russia's armies into two fronts. Japan was wise enough to know that it was suicidal to try and fight both the US and Russia.

The Soviets won a crushing victory at the batte of Khalkhin-Gol ended any northern japanese expansion. The Japanese only option was expansion southwards - meant that the Soviet Eastern flank was secured for the duration of the war.

@woobification What beat Germany was going into Russia when they did, with what they had at the time. Most military scolars today agree, that the war was lost in the early before moscow. For ex. they entered Russia with literally thousands of different brands of trucks, a logistical nightmare. And their main battle tank the MkIV was not yet in service. Their main tank was the Skoda . The toughness of the Russian soldier and also the Soviet Mass Production played a part too. Just too ambitious..
@barbwire7308 The Pzkpfw IV was in service since the invasion of Poland. The Pzkpfw III was the main workhorse tank at the time and the IV filled an infantry support role (75mm cannon but low velocity). They used them in Russia and finally upgraded to the L/40 75mm high velocity cannon in April '42 (this was a few months before Stalingrad, which was the turning point for the Axis)

@1littlelee Russia was only one facet of Hitler's failure. Had he only focused on Russia, he may have been successful. But N. Africa, Western Europe, the UK and Americas distracted too many resources which, if applied exclusively to the Soviets, would have meant victory. His Generals...men who could have gotten the job done...tried to warn him about war on two fronts, but due to his delusions of grandeur, he didn't listen. America made a mistake in helping the USSR...we paid that price for 50yrs
@alternatehistories wrong no matter hopw he did it he would not have been able to advance on russia the fuel in his vehicles kept freezing for one, he also at jursk delayed the assualt and that led to a spectacular failiure, the T34 was also feared by the panzer divisions, they used to ram the panzers, I can almost guarantee (as other expert say) hitler would have failed taking russia, and it would have been a spectular failiure also.
@1littlelee This is all hypothetical...there is no wrong. I said that if Hitler had focused exclusively on Russia, he could have succeeded. Declaring war on America, bombing Britain, the N. Africa campaign, and occupying all of western Europe used up valuable resources which if applied to the Eastern Front, would have meant victory. Remember, the US and UK provided hardware for Stalin - buying him time. The winter didn't cause the German defeat...but it did give Stalins armies time to regroup.
@1littlelee If Germany would have started with his concept of total war before Stalingrad he would have been able to replace the losses in Russia much faster. And if he let his generals fight the war, I think we would have taken Russia, or at least Moscow. Everyone is talking about the huge German failures like StalingGrad, Batlle of the Bulge etc. Al due to Hitler stubbornness. And during the battle of Moscow, the Germans outmanned the Russians.. The UK and US were no friends of Stalin and they would have been content to idly stand by while Hitler overran the Soviets. But Hitler had to bomb the UK and sink vessels in the North Sea-BIG mistake. In fact, the Allies did delay Normandy intentionally so the Germans could slow the westward progress of the Soviet army. The Allies indirectly"helped" Hitler to serve their own interests

@MrHelmyabdullah What I meant is that Normandy could have taken place earlier...but it was delayed to suit Allied interests. It was best to wait and let Germany expend its resources fighting the USSR and also to keep the USSR from overrunning Western Europe. You can't tell me that Normandy wasn't inspired by Soviet progress westward...it was a race between two opposing ideologies....and a land grab for Stalin. The timing of Normandy had a Hell of a lot more behind it than just the local weather.

Lots of "card playing" by the Allies...they turned down requests for assistance by the Black Orchestra...the Allies figured it was best to keep Hitler alive because his blunders were losing the war for Germany quicker than anything else."The enemy of my enemy is my friend" was a weak justification for any support the Allies gave Stalin...which was the bare minimum. @alternatehistories. Agreed, it was much better to keep Hitler in power than to risk having someone like Erwin Rommel take command. But it's a bit of an insult to call the western allies support "weak". Yes, the USSR did destroy 75% of the german army, but I suspect the western allies bombing german cities & industry into rubble may have helped a little. What a pity the allies couldn't get along AFTER the war. At least we didn't have a nuclear war WW3, as could have happened.
@baobubs I was referring to Allied shipments of weapons and materials to Russia. This was much earlier...before the bombing campaign. BTW, I always get a kick out of the film footage of US and Soviet soldiers meeting along the river and hugging...in reality it was a "race" between two competing ideologies trying to extend their sphere of influence as far east or west as possible. What's messed up is that both China and Russia went against the US in Korea only 5 years after we assisted them.
@alternatehistories My great uncle survived WW2 and when he finally came home from the european campaign after germany had surrendered he said that there was a large anti sentiment towards russia and communist in germany and many thought the broken german army would actually join the allies against russia, clearly that didnt happen but just imagine if it did occur what would our world be like, imagine no cold war

Germany's infrastructure and economy were ruined, millions of Germans were dead...and the country itself was divided up into sectors to be governed by wartime foes. The war in USSR would had been finished by december 1941 if HITLER didn't delayed operation BARBAROSSa to help MUSSOLINI and then denied GUDERIAN advance to MOSCOW by AUGUST(even STALIN couldn't believe Hitler attacking USSR so late(mud and winter?).

So did the U.S, after Japan attacked them in the pacific. You are wrong in the regard of 'war declaration'. You are right, Hitler should of squashed treacherous Britain first. Then focused on Russia, that was his biggest mistake unfortunately.
@alternatehistories There was no problem with Barbarossa, besides the loss of a large ally. If it weren't for the horrible delays in August 1941 till Stalingrad, he would've had Russia. Russia's industry and manpower would be the only needs. Their lack of an actual "army" with actual "weapons" was quite appalling in 1941.

The Me262 also had air to air missiles. It was called the R4/M. Development started Nov 1944. On its first use in March 1945, only six Me262 shot down 25 bombers in a single attack. In spite of 632 fighters accompanying them. Two of the six Me262 were also lost. Even in April 1945 only 24 FW190 shot down 40 bombers without a single loss using these missiles. The Me262 was ready as a fighter in 1943. Hitler ordered it to be converted a bomber. He was the USAAF best Friend....

The Me 262 jet engines 004 Jumo did not enter production until 1944' wether Hitler ordered it a bomber or unicorn would not change the timline of producing 004 Jumo jet engine or the fact that Germany lacked the strategic metals needed to produce jet engines in quanitity. The 1944' - 004 Jumo jet engine had operational service life span of measly 7-10 hrs before it had to be replaced.

The V2 rocket helped us into the space race vastly more than the silver bird ever did, if it did at all. The GO 229 was stealth because it was made out of wood (like the British Mosquito, which was also stealth). The only way in impacted the design of the B2 was in the fact that they were both flying wings. check out the Nazi Kugelpanzer for more awesome but ridiculous concepts.
Just to clarify, I'm not saying that they weren't innovative. they had great designs that changed warfare. But they were impractical for the time. Their use in combat did little or nothing against the Allies and bought them no closer to winning the war. Also, their impact on modern warfare is somewhat exaggerated by people. They mainly influenced the air and space programs of countries after the way. The B-2 stealth bomber isn't based off of the Go-229 except in its flying wing design.

For every brilliant idea that they had that changed the technology of warfare, they had about a million other ideas that were utterly retarded. Or the one about a gigantic tank that could easily have been taken out by an allied airstrike.
@phadil it's true. test show that it took 4 hits on average to bring down a B-17 and only a single hit to bring down a Spitfire. The only problem is, the round has lower speed and an inferior ballistic characteristic to the 20mm or .50 cal round.

You really see that in the 2. WW, every year there have been new weapons or upgrades. Today a fighter/tanks is developed and used for 20-50 years, in developing countries even longer, every 5-10 years maybe small upgrades are made..During 2. WW a 1935 tank/aircraft was almost useless against new 1942 models,The T-54 (building started 1947) is still an important tank in some areas. Libyas Army had ~2000 tanks before war started, 1500 of these were T-54/55. Only 180 new T-90

There were special commands months before the end of the war, from mid-1944 (D-Day), they only had one mission: get german technology (=undamaged weapons, plans...) after the war very much german worked for them. The V2 was the base for space rockets and von Braun developed the V2 and the rockets for the american space shuttles.
Americans offered good life conditions for the scientists, russians even kidnapped some and brought them to siberia/kazakhstan, life was good for russian conditions but...nazis experimented a lot, the results there very important. It's sad that so many great techs are developed during the war or by military companies, for war techs countries spend trillions today, Jets, nuclear (power), even the internet, I think mobiles too, space flights, many medicine were developed for the military (=war).

@mrclaytonio I hear 2 conflicting "facts" all of the time. 1. More German fighters were shot down by B-17's than any other aircraft. 2. That casualty rates were something like 50% for these bombers. How can both be true? I agree. I'm not sure footage we see even comes close to the actual carnage.

The Luftwaffe didn't have a policy like that- you flew until you were either killed, captured, or wounded and deemed unfit to fly combat any more. @unrealassasination T-34 was arguably, the worst tank along with the KV-series. T-34 lacked ammunition storage, unlike the Sherman, lacked an actual gun that was half the performance of the Shermans, lacked the actual transmission to survive, had horrible visibility, worse than even the first panther and was cramped. Sherman had good space compartments, ammo storage, a good 75 that later was upgraded to 76, had excellent suspension and could be modified to kill even the pigsty known as T-62.

@unrealassasination Also, 150,000 armored AFVs went to the Eastern Front from Britain/America. 47,000 tanks were included. 45,000, roughly 90%, were entirely destroyed. Also, Sherman crews, despite Russian operators being complete idiots, leaving ammunition (like the British) exposed, they enjoyed the room/gun/visibility of the tank. In T-34, they complained about it being too cramped, optics being horrible. Research! Also, Germany lacked men w/800MBT at start. Russia had 12 out of 18,000 ready.

@AllBobsAllTheTime "Inviting" the US into war was Hitler's ultimate mistake..but he originally hadn't planned on it at all. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor surprised him and forced him to make that fatal decision. His mistake was in thinking that if he also declared war on the US, Japan would reciprocate by attacking Russia from the east...thus dividing Russia's armies into two fronts. Japan was wise enough to know that it was suicidal to try and fight both the US and Russia.

In Aug 1939, weeks before Hitler invaded Poland, the Soviet Union and Japan fought a massive tank battle on the Mongolian border – the largest the world had ever seen. The Soviets won a crushing victory at the batte of Khalkhin-Gol ended any northern japanese expansion. The Japanese only option was expansion southwards - meant that the Soviet Eastern flank was secured for the duration of the war.

@woobification What beat Germany was going into Russia when they did, with what they had at the time. Most military scolars today agree, that the war was lost in the early before moscow. For ex. they entered Russia with literally thousands of different brands of trucks, a logistical nightmare. And their main battle tank the MkIV was not yet in service. Their main tank was the Skoda . The toughness of the Russian soldier and also the Soviet Mass Production played a part too. Just too ambitious..

The Pzkpfw III was the main workhorse tank at the time and the IV filled an infantry support role (75mm cannon but low velocity). They used them in Russia and finally upgraded to the L/40 75mm high velocity cannon in April '42 (this was a few months before Stalingrad, which was the turning point for the Axis)

Africa, Western Europe, the UK and Americas distracted too many resources which, if applied exclusively to the Soviets, would have meant victory. His Generals...men who could have gotten the job done...tried to warn him about war on two fronts, but due to his delusions of grandeur, he didn't listen. @1littlelee This is all hypothetical...there is no wrong. I said that if Hitler had focused exclusively on Russia, he could have succeeded. Declaring war on America, bombing Britain, the N. Africa campaign, and occupying all of western Europe used up valuable resources which if applied to the Eastern Front, would have meant victory. Remember, the US and UK provided hardware for Stalin - buying him time. The winter didn't cause the German defeat...but it did give Stalins armies time to regroup.

And if he let his generals fight the war, I think we would have taken Russia, or at least Moscow. Everyone is talking about the huge German failures like StalingGrad, Batlle of the Bulge etc. Al due to Hitler stubbornness. And during the battle of Moscow, the Germans outmanned the Russians.. Not by much, but still.

The UK and US were no friends of Stalin and they would have been content to idly stand by while Hitler overran the Soviets. But Hitler had to bomb the UK and sink vessels in the North Sea-BIG mistake. In fact, the Allies did delay Normandy intentionally so the Germans could slow the westward progress of the Soviet army. The Allies indirectly"helped" Hitler to serve their own interests

It was best to wait and let Germany expend its resources fighting the USSR and also to keep the USSR from overrunning Western Europe. You can't tell me that Normandy wasn't inspired by Soviet progress westward...it was a race between two opposing ideologies....and a land grab for Stalin. The timing of Normandy had a Hell of a lot more behind it than just the local weather.

But it's a bit of an insult to call the western allies support "weak". Yes, the USSR did destroy 75% of the german army, but I suspect the western allies bombing german cities & industry into rubble may have helped a little. What a pity the allies couldn't get along AFTER the war. At least we didn't have a nuclear war WW3, as could have happened.

@baobubs I was referring to Allied shipments of weapons and materials to Russia. This was much earlier...before the bombing campaign. BTW, I always get a kick out of the film footage of US and Soviet soldiers meeting along the river and hugging...in reality it was a "race" between two competing ideologies trying to extend their sphere of influence as far east or west as possible. What's messed up is that both China and Russia went against the US in Korea only 5 years after we assisted them.

The Me262 also had air to air missiles. It was called the R4/M. Development started Nov 1944. On its first use in March 1945, only six Me262 shot down 25 bombers in a single attack. In spite of 632 fighters accompanying them. Two of the six Me262 were also lost. Even in April 1945 only 24 FW190 shot down 40 bombers without a single loss using these missiles. The Me262 was ready as a fighter in 1943. Hitler ordered it to be converted a bomber. He was the USAAF best Friend....

The Me 262 jet engines 004 Jumo did not enter production until 1944' wether Hitler ordered it a bomber or unicorn would not change the timline of producing 004 Jumo jet engine or the fact that Germany lacked the strategic metals needed to produce jet engines in quanitity. The 1944' - 004 Jumo jet engine had operational service life span of measly 7-10 hrs before it had to be replaced.

The V2 rocket helped us into the space race vastly more than the silver bird ever did, if it did at all. The GO 229 was stealth because it was made out of wood (like the British Mosquito, which was also stealth). The only way in impacted the design of the B2 was in the fact that they were both flying wings. check out the Nazi Kugelpanzer for more awesome but ridiculous concepts.

Just to clarify, I'm not saying that they weren't innovative. they had great designs that changed warfare. But they were impractical for the time. Their use in combat did little or nothing against the Allies and bought them no closer to winning the war. Also, their impact on modern warfare is somewhat exaggerated by people. They mainly influenced the air and space programs of countries after the way. The B-2 stealth bomber isn't based off of the Go-229 except in its flying wing design.

You really see that in the 2. WW, every year there have been new weapons or upgrades. Today a fighter/tanks is developed and used for 20-50 years, in developing countries even longer, every 5-10 years maybe small upgrades are made..During 2. WW a 1935 tank/aircraft was almost useless against new 1942 models,The T-54 (building started 1947) is still an important tank in some areas. Libyas Army had ~2000 tanks before war started, 1500 of these were T-54/55. Only 180 new T-90

@PanekPL Hi polish bro^^ I'm not german really, polish mom and dad... but no doubt, allies and russians "stole" german patents and technology after the war. There were special commands months before the end of the war, from mid-1944 (D-Day), they only had one mission: get german technology (=undamaged weapons, plans...) after the war very much german worked for them. The V2 was the base for space rockets and von Braun developed the V2 and the rockets for the american space shuttles.

Americans offered good life conditions for the scientists, russians even kidnapped some and brought them to siberia/kazakhstan, life was good for russian conditions but...nazis experimented a lot, the results there very important. It's sad that so many great techs are developed during the war or by military companies, for war techs countries spend trillions today, Jets, nuclear (power), even the internet, I think mobiles too, space flights, many medicine were developed for the military (=war).

My uncle Ernst was the lone survivor of an E-boat squadron destroyed by British planes. My English side had 3 of my relatives serve in WW2. (RAF, Royal Navy, and British Army). We don't like Hitler. But, I sympathize about what's happening to you in Germany. It's the same industrial capitalists ruining everything that Hitler spoke of.

He-111's, DO-17's, and Ju-88's aren't heavy bombers. They can terror bomb, but can't flatten a city like London. I never said Hitler wanted to destroy everything. I said he bombed civilians. Then germany build rockets for revenge, the V2, which they shot over to you guys because you mass bombed civilians. @mrclaytonio I hear 2 conflicting "facts" all of the time. 1. More German fighters were shot down by B-17's than any other aircraft. 2. That casualty rates were something like 50% for these bombers. How can both be true? I agree. I'm not sure footage we see even comes close to the actual carnage.

@madlivebfn Anyone wanting to know how many aircraft Eric Hartman shot down (352) can just Google his name and read Wiki's information. Most of his kills (345) were against Russians, but he was briefly posted to the Ploiesti oil fields where he shot down four P51's in a single mission. He was not posted to the front until Oct. '42. When the war ended the U.S. turned him over to the Russians who jailed him for 10 years. In 1997 the Russian govenment admitted that his conviction was unlawful.

@madlivebfn That's because the Allies had a policy that after so many missions flown,you were rotated home to train new pilots since youe experience was priceless. The Luftwaffe didn't have a policy like that- you flew until you were either killed, captured, or wounded and deemed unfit to fly combat any more. And to an extent, I believe the Japanese had a policy similar to the Luftwaffe although their pilots didn't have many triple-digit aces like the Luftwaffe did.

No, Erich Hartmann shot in a short fight a lot of P-51 Mustangs down.
The top ranked Fighter Pilot of the allies was and is Ivan Kozhedub. Also Aleksandr Ivanovich Pokryshkin was a good fighter pilot, better than the british or the us fighter pilots. And if you say that the russians was very bad and lost many planes by hartmann then look at the russian aces, they were way better than this american pilot.
