Compared to the idiotic "X-treme" styling trend of American and Japanese cars, the Lada Riva's clean unpretentious lines are refreshing on the eyes.
Fix the quality control problems so that it is absolutely reliable and the car would be a top seller for the next 10 years at least! The Riva is an ideal candidate for electric power.
When they shipped these over to the uk in the 70s they had to take nearly everything out of there brand new cars and replace it all because they were made from the worst parts imaginable

Try one for size i had one it was the best fucking car i ever owned. BL or Rover group at the time could never build a car as reliable as this and you fuckers know it.
Its just a shame they don't still import them as its got to be better than this Renault crap im driving now
I guess you're right - if you always drive it on idle you'd get less than 12l/100 km. Unfortunately, I live in a very hilly country and since it is a "bit" underpowered you have to rev it a bit higher to get to the top of the hills. Nevertheless, it was a good car since it had a great money/value ratio back then.
My father owned an 01, 04 and an 06. It was about as good as it got inside the Soviet Block. Built like shit off of a dated Italian design but they were pretty rugged and easy to fix.
This car was designed by Italians in 1960's and the "amazing Russian engineers made it only worse". And for all of you that said that the Lada is good in cold Russian climate, well, it's not. The Russians couldn't make a single engine that could start over -10 C in the USSR times.
@PidurEST Pure BS. I used to live there for a three months in 2002. Had to drive FWD Lada. Don't remember a model, a bio-design weird mid-90 one, newer than Samara but not in a production already. preetty crappy one but it was starting easily all time including - 34C. From my observation there it was French the worst in winter falling at -20, next were neighbours' Grand Cherokee and Mercury Grand Marquees falling at - 25C. BMWs and most Jap cars usually failed below -25-27C.
Well maybe true, actually the Soviets copied pretty good engines, but the only problem at the times was the oil that was on sale in USSR. Also, the Soviet's didn't have any antifreeze, pure water only.
@PidurEST I wasn't there under Soviets but it doesn't seems to be true either. A good lubricants are critical to operate a car in such a winter coinditions. I won't even try do use standard Ameriucan oil there. Same is about cooling liquid. I hasve no idea how one could use water subzero,. It will ruin any engine beyond repair in an hour after parking.
@zipacna1980 That's why they didnt start, because of the oil. And they put warm water into the engine on the morning and let it out in the evening (kolkhoz tractors, trucks etc).
@PidurEST Here is another coin for a LADA. I used to travel in Europe much and it is often flooding for a few years now. Pay attention to a cars driving around after. In both Italy and Germany it is Niva and Riva are about a third of all cars on roads for a few days after. Most other cars are totaled due to a cost of electronics repairs.
@PidurEST Ladas came with -40 or -60 deg.c. antifreeze from the plant.
The Moskvich, meanwhile, had an engine made of a special alloy which didn't corrode even if it was filled with fresh water each morning. And two quick release drain cocks on the engine. Luxury!
@BorisD1992 I've run a 1972 Moskvich 427 for 50,000km without breakdown! (or spares backup, in Britain) The brakes, on the other hand, need an overhaul every other month...
@tavriadriver the brakes are horrible on them. you should try a moskvich aleko with a opel kadet gearbox ( i think ) they are very good in all driving conditions
@elgringotomecino the simple cars are BEST..i m young bt i love simple cars..bcz they don't care about weather.water,dust,rust..love corollas etc..and i don't know y ppl always point out others!!
@elgringotomecino Yeah, the car is great. My father used to drive it in 2001 (I was 4 then). I really liked to ride in it. And I miss it so much. :(...
I had the pleasure of working on Lada Cars for seven years, they were not unreliable and parts did not keep falling off. The media never did like Ladas, mind you if they said 'These are good cars don't buy a Ford' they would not get their back handers. Ok, early Samaras were a little rough but they got better as time went on. I have had 24 of them and still own 4.
I bought a 1992 Riva 1.5 E from the auctions back inthe year 2000, it had 18k on the clock and was a lovely little car. It was really roughly made but I loved it for that, I loved the upright driving position and it's heavy steering!! Wish I could buy one now, really regretted selling it for a boring eurobox!!
@adriannippy I have owned several expensive German cars, depreciation, expensive parts and my S class Mercedes Benz is the only car that broke down on me!. Unlike any of my Lada Cars, which is why I still own Ladas and no German Cars. Trust me, i've been a mechanic for 20 years and German cars are seriously overrated.
What I want to say, that LADA Riva (VAZ-2107 in Russia) was a nice car many years ago. But manufacturers who make them (LADAs) suppose that if the cars are popular (because of their price) it is possible not to cut down this model. That's why VAZ-2107 is still alive! Everything is simple.
While I partly agree with where you are coming from, a 'good car' also has to be reliable and well built, neither of which the Lada was. The body panel fit was dreadful and things really did fall of them. I remember on old What Car? test infact where that actually happened. There was also an old Top Gear test where the tester had to keep tightening things up with a screw driver. I would imagine though, when they did break down, they were probably dead easy to repair?
I got an old Lada ,sat for a year ,charged the battery that was damaged and couldnt hold a charge for long , Lada fired up and ran ! Its a nice simple car ,great as a spare ,I would import a new one if they would let me !
I've owned two Ladas. Both were very reliable, though I must admit I only bought them because I was skint at the time and couldn't afford anything else. I would never slag them off though. Those cars never let me down.
The Lada Riva wasn't that bad, despite being one of the cheapest cars on the market. They still sell very well in Russia where ultra-rugged design is more important than style.
I was in Russia a few years ago. This car is all over the place. I was in mainly rural areas where this was the ONLY car from what I saw, but it was also quite prevalent in Moscow. I was surprised.
парень, просто эта машина единственая, которую невозможно убить.... На неё можно возить кирпичи, много бутылок пива и она не дорогая. А сейчас все в основном ездят на иномарках и на lada 2110, kalina, 2115, 2114, 2113
great cheap cars tough and the 8000 pound corsa / has no room or boot like the lada,/try and pull a caravan with a corsa see what happens,,,back springs on the road,,,
It was the affordable way for most to get a car;although cheap/slightly unpleasant and rather quirky it excelled in simplicity and functionality at a price that could never be matched by todays cars.
I also used to hate these cars as a kid in the 80's and early 90's. Upon reflection though, I think it is a pity that Lada has left the UK and now people seem to be inceasing filling our roads with bland Korean (and to a much lesser extent worse Malaysian) car marques. Come back the Russians!
I'm not sure why you consider it embarrassing. Personally, I'm embarrassed and indeed ashamed that the mighty BMC/British Leyland/Rover went from one of the largest carbuilders on the planet into nothing.
Perhaps you've never been to Russia. Perhaps you've never had to dig your car out of 12 feet of snow in the morning where the weather would kill anything but the sturdiest of proven designs. Some people still buy a car to use, not as some status symbol!
As a Canadian, I can totally relate to that. I'd love to import a Lada from Europe in 2011 and feel the thrill of starting it up back home in -40C weather. My family has a long history with Volvos and I find that the 240 and 140 are like the Lada 2107's lost brothers.
Function over style... nothing as beautiful as that.
Exactly is. I was to Germany a few years ago right during a flood. I'm sure Lada is not so popular there since the wall fallen. I bet it is less than 1 to 1000 from other brands but in a few days after this flood they were 6 of 10 cars i've seen riding on a road. Other cars were mostly towed away to get rid of them.
@srt10taylor Indeed, I agree you with you - my message DOES say it's not a status symbol but something to use.
I'd love to hear how you claim to know that this car serves a transportation purpose very poorly. What is so wrong about it and its design? I'd be surprised if you've ever a Lada, let alone owned one or used one as daily transport!
22 thumbs-ups suggest I cannot be the only one who thinks the way I do.
These cars nowadays would be regarded as classics to kids today but to us as kids they were the staple diet of a comedian's set of one liners and god help you if someone in the family had one. Oh the shame back then.
I wish I could ship one in from Russia..
It has been a while since I last saw one although I did meet someone at the local Morrison's petrol station who uses a Skoda Estelle as an every day car..
The man had style and vision... Dare To Be Different ;-)
@paulwlynch wtf? skoda estelle? i have never heard that one and im from slovakia... those idiots wanted to sell that in england, france etc. and they called it estelle :D...
@HekateMGO No, that's not true. OK, we're talking drifts here, but even so 12 foot snowdrifts happen in Wales and Los Angeles, let alone Russia. Google it if you wish! Perhaps you've never looked out of your window and not been able to see any trace of your car whatsoever because of the snow, but I have - and had to dig it out.
@BEEFYBAYONET Finnaly some one hows a real car driver i love my volvo 144s, it runs like a champ and cicks ass in the snow. Much better than most four wheel drive trucks
The reasons that Lada withdrew from the UK was tough emissions regulations that they couldn't meet(for the emissions requirements they had to fit a part from the USA which they just couldn't afford to get or install;had they done this the cars would still be on sale here in the UK).
They pulled out of the UK in 1997, because of, as you said, emissions regulations, and also because they didn't update the style, when other car companies were coming up with new technologies and styles.
You used to see them everywhere then almost overnight they vanished back home to Russia.
A family friend had a few of them finally managing to get a new one. A dark blue Riva saloon. I actually liked it's boxy shape(I like the Cortina mrk4/5 also)and although I remember it was basic inside dare I say it was comfortable and served him for many years without fault.
I used to have one of these, it was a 1992 1500E and I loved it, it had 17k on the clock and drove like new. Horrible car by modern standards but I loved its simplcity and boxy looks! Dropped to pieces pretty quickly though so had to sell it, wish I hadnt though..
i wishd id had some day riva 1300 1987 and riva 1500 1988

The body panel fit was dreadful and things really did fall of them. I remember on old What Car? test infact where that actually happened. There was also an old Top Gear test where the tester had to keep tightening things up with a screw driver. I would imagine though, when they did break down, they were probably dead easy to repair?

Old Fiat 124 rip-off made much worse. Typical for russians. Rip it off and then ruin it and sell it for years.

THe reason why this video is watched in RUssia more is because we really wonder how you make fun of our cars.

no doubt about that

The Lada Riva wasn't that bad, despite being one of the cheapest cars on the market. They still sell very well in Russia where ultra-rugged design is more important than style.

nah i dont see that as sad

I was in Russia a few years ago. This car is all over the place. I was in mainly rural areas where this was the ONLY car from what I saw, but it was also quite prevalent in Moscow. I was surprised.

парень, просто эта машина единственая, которую невозможно убить.... На неё можно возить кирпичи, много бутылок пива и она не дорогая. А сейчас все в основном ездят на иномарках и на lada 2110, kalina, 2115, 2114, 2113

In Hungary called this car Lada Cube, or Nova.

great cheap cars tough and the 8000 pound corsa / has no room or boot like the lada,/try and pull a caravan with a corsa see what happens,,,back springs on the road,,,
elvischevy 2 years ago 3
It was the affordable way for most to get a car;although cheap/slightly unpleasant and rather quirky it excelled in simplicity and functionality at a price that could never be matched by todays cars.
AnthonyUK 2 years ago 2
I also used to hate these cars as a kid in the 80's and early 90's. Upon reflection though, I think it is a pity that Lada has left the UK and now people seem to be inceasing filling our roads with bland Korean (and to a much lesser extent worse Malaysian) car marques. Come back the Russians!

O my God! You can see this model in Russia, even today.

BEEFYBAYONET 2 years ago 75
As a Canadian, I can totally relate to that. I'd love to import a Lada from Europe in 2011 and feel the thrill of starting it up back home in -40C weather. My family has a long history with Volvos and I find that the 240 and 140 are like the Lada 2107's lost brothers.
Function over style... nothing as beautiful as that.
DeLorean4 2 years ago 7
Exactly is. I was to Germany a few years ago right during a flood. I'm sure Lada is not so popular there since the wall fallen. I bet it is less than 1 to 1000 from other brands but in a few days after this flood they were 6 of 10 cars i've seen riding on a road. Other cars were mostly towed away to get rid of them.
zipacna1980 2 years ago 4
@BEEFYBAYONET haha its not a status symbol! a car serves a purpose and this car serves it extremely poorly
srt10taylor 1 year ago

@BEEFYBAYONET LMAO @12feet, maybe 2feet yes, but 12 no, that happens in newfoundland...maybe on the russian east coast...maybe
HekateMGO 1 year ago
@HekateMGO No, that's not true. OK, we're talking drifts here, but even so 12 foot snowdrifts happen in Wales and Los Angeles, let alone Russia. Google it if you wish! Perhaps you've never looked out of your window and not been able to see any trace of your car whatsoever because of the snow, but I have - and had to dig it out.
BEEFYBAYONET 1 year ago
@BEEFYBAYONET Ahem, you have no idea where I live so I'll forgive you that one...and yes 12 snowdrift definitely possible...

The reasons that Lada withdrew from the UK was tough emissions regulations that they couldn't meet(for the emissions requirements they had to fit a part from the USA which they just couldn't afford to get or install;had they done this the cars would still be on sale here in the UK).
AnthonyUK 2 years ago 4
They pulled out of the UK in 1997, because of, as you said, emissions regulations, and also because they didn't update the style, when other car companies were coming up with new technologies and styles.
2491cc 2 years ago
Also the Riva in it's current form wouldn't meet EuroNCAP safety regs;the design is the same as when it left the UK.

Well I still have one. In the 80's and 90's people used to laugh at them. Now people love it. More character and charm of any modern car.
stephenfloyd 2 years ago 7
You used to see them everywhere then almost overnight they vanished back home to Russia.
A family friend had a few of them finally managing to get a new one. A dark blue Riva saloon. I actually liked it's boxy shape(I like the Cortina mrk4/5 also)and although I remember it was basic inside dare I say it was comfortable and served him for many years without fault.
paulwlynch 3 years ago 6
I used to have one of these, it was a 1992 1500E and I loved it, it had 17k on the clock and drove like new. Horrible car by modern standards but I loved its simplcity and boxy looks! Dropped to pieces pretty quickly though so had to sell it, wish I hadnt though..
