I'd sure like to know why squirrels do that. I've seen it twice now, only not like this; both times, the squirrel would run up one tree trunk, fall off backwards, and then repeat with the adjacent trunk. If I had to guess, I'd say they were trying to make an escape, but lacked the coordination. (Keep in mind... lots of people carelessly litter trails with their beer cans...)
