Great he won The Variety Club's Stage Performance award!!! About time Kenneth Branagh was appreciated. I love Chekhov and own Branagh's narration of Chekhov's short stories; enjoy those very much. He seems to be brilliant in this and wish I could see it. Do you think they put it on DVD eventually?

um....Branaugh is WAAAAYYYYY too old to play Ivanov. And it's too british - - this isn't really Chekhov. it's more like a british drama on the BBC. we need some new british actors
Branagh is not too old to play Ivanov. Nikolai Ivanov is on "the wrong side of forty", and Ken is only 47. And he was bloody brilliant, by the way. I'm all for new British actors, but remember the greats who made film and theatre what it is. Ken, may you continue to grace us with your amazing talent!
whoa there, ilovemuchado! good lord! i can have an opinion for goodness sake. BRANAUGH. there - spelled it right. forgive. most versions of Ivanov i've read puts him at his mid thirties at MOST. wait - are you just one of those devotees in whose eyes Mr. K can do no wrong? because if that's the case, then there's no point in us talking, because that has to do with obsession and nothing with acting or Checkhov. I never said i didn't like Branaugh, but he's not the end all be all.
Yeah, you still haven't spelt it right. From what I hear, Ivanov is supposed to be in a mid life crisis in his forties anyway. Yes, I am a fan of Kenneth (and proud), and I know good acting when I see it. Branagh was world class in Ivanov. As far as the play being too British ... it has to be accessible to a modern British audience, and Stoppard did brilliantly by adding irony to parts of it, especially with the credit crunch, etc.
of COURSE you have opinions. i welcome them! but seriously, i've read several versions of Ivanov (which was a sort of rough draft for Uncle Vanya i'm sure you know) and he IS supposed to be about 35. by the way - don't you have to be SEEN by the world in order to have a "world class performance"? and Brits are very smart - they can handle an original translation of this play. it's already ironic. Checkhov was quite good, you know. i like Kenneth too.
Branagh, THANKYOU. And I'm glad you like Kenneth. If I'm honest, does it really MATTER how old Ivanov was supposed to be? He isn't too young or too old. My God, I meant Kenneth was "world class" by being the best I think anyone could be when it comes to Ivanov. He didn't have to be seen by the world for that to happen. The bottom line is, Ken was fantastic, Stoppard was fantastic. Everyone was fantastic! Although I thought Tom Hiddleston was a little wooden.
You say that you have a 4 hour train journey to get to London? well I myself have a 2 hour plane journey and I wish too that they release it on DVD but that's not likely to happen... or is it? what do you think? anyway I'm really looking forward to watching the play indeed!!!
Thank you, Tediousoldfools! Two days ago I told ilovemuchado I would like to lead a worldwide fans' rebellion in order to get a DVD version of Ivanov. I read on Donmar's Theatre site it organizes captioned and audio-described performances for deaf and blind people...May I say most of us are deaf and blind about that great thing because too far to enjoy it? I know, it's the curse of theatre...But it's, also, a sort of discrimination!
If only they would record it for a DVD. I wish sometimes they would go on tour with these plays as it's a 4 hour train journey for me to get to London. Still, roll on Wednesday!!
