I love this piece so much. I'm currently a high school student playing this on trombone and euphonium (long story on why I'm playing it on both). My favorite part without a doubt is the stringendo at about 2:07 minutes in. That is, in my opinion, coupled with the heavy brass at 3:56, the cornerstone of his greastest work. Truly spectacular.
@tromboneroo4 Amen. I have never just sat at my computer and listened to a piece over and over again for 30 minutes until I found this. That's sayin' something
Thanks for uploading this-i'd also love to see the BBC documentary about Bernstein conducting the BBCso orch in the piece- -there were some tensions apparently.
CallmeBe if you think Ormandys performance is good, you obviously haven/t heard Sir Adrian Boult with the LPO. As a child I had Ormandys recording and was quite satisfied ( especially with the trumpet vibrato) but when someone gave me Boults interpretation, it gave me a lifelong adoration of this brilliant yet underestimated British conductor. No one comes near Boults Nimrod.
One of my very favorite sections of music from one of my very favorite peices of music--absolutely spectacular. Nice version here--however, I don't think there is any finer than that recorded by Eugene Ormandy ca. 1962. (That's not to take away from this interpretation, it is good--but the Ormandy is tact down perfect).
The last chord diminuendo to piano was way too much.
