The RAF have no more than a few hundred frontline aircraft, our airforce is now the same size as the Belgium airforce. We have 300 Challenger 2 MBT's. In 1990, we had 55 Reg & 55 TA Inf battalions. The C-in-C dreams of having 240,000 soldiers to play with. The British Army has 300 Chally 2 MBT's on strength-not 500. The RAF does NOT have 1,500 frontline aircraft, it has not more than 350 frontline aircraft these days. You are a dreamer, get a grip FFS.

The problem with this scenario, is that the F15E's are based at RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath, the U2/TR1's are at RAF Fairford and RAF Akrotiri, the Typhoons are training Nellis AFB and the AWAC are joint force assets based in both countries...Not to mention almost everything is designed to work together. Thanks to the space program we got GPS, the Internet, satellite TV, etc. As for the poverty line, Great Britain has 14% of its population living under it while the US has 12% living under it. IN the US this is around 14% or 44million people. The 14% figure you give for the UK is relative poverty (defines income or resources in relation to the average. It is concerned with the absence of the material needs to participate fully in accepted daily life.) UK absolute poverty is around 9% on average.

And our median income is actually higher than that of the UK also. The latest research I've been able to find on absolute poverty shows that the UK is at 13.1% for 2009-2010. No newer research is available yet. The latest I could find for the US is a NY times article from 2008. At the time, AP for the US was at 8.7%. UK at 12.4%.

On the topic, the poverty rates tend to differ by a few percentage points at best. So If you're trying to argue that poverty rates in the US are "epidemic" compared to those of the UK or the whole of Europe for that matter, you're on a slippery slope. @fiveoscar it is vary hard to get decent poverty figures but it was a general calculation from various bits of data. your data was from the cia factbook which gave figures from 2004 and 2006, since then the USA had a right wing government supporting the rich to the detriment to the poor whilst we had a left-ish government which had a strong poverty reduction scheme. also take into account the UK has welfare support, free (quality) education and a free health service, none of which the USA has.

The RAF have no more than a few hundred frontline aircraft, our airforce is now the same size as the Belgium airforce. We have 300 Challenger 2 MBT's. In 1990, we had 55 Reg & 55 TA Inf battalions. The C-in-C dreams of having 240,000 soldiers to play with. The British Army has 300 Chally 2 MBT's on strength-not 500. The RAF does NOT have 1,500 frontline aircraft, it has not more than 350 frontline aircraft these days. You are a dreamer, get a grip FFS.

may i recommend ... not as a dig to the yanks ... that you take the F22 off the list as it doesn't work and something like 60% of the fleet are grounded indefinitely, which bring real concerns to me about the F35 and if they are really worth buying.
Personally i'd spend the money upgrading the sea harriers, buying more Typhoons and possibly looking at the French Rafale.

'Ace' status counts for little when your opponants have largely been third rate nations, duckshoots are a stroll in the park. Most of the aircraft they possessed were obselete. The fact that Iraq fought Iran does not rate them as a potent military force. The allies had total air superiority during GW1. It was the greatest miss match since the Luftwaffe took on the Polish bi-planes in 39-no parity whatsoever.

The problem with this scenario, is that the F15E's are based at RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath, the U2/TR1's are at RAF Fairford and RAF Akrotiri, the Typhoons are training Nellis AFB and the AWAC are joint force assets based in both countries...Not to mention almost everything is designed to work together. And is. 4000 miles away in Afghanistan.

Thanks to the space program we got GPS, the Internet, satellite TV, etc. As for the poverty line, Great Britain has 14% of its population living under it while the US has 12% living under it. So the US is actually doing better there. To answer your other question:

@fiveoscar i can assure though those figures aren't correct. I study economics. Absolute poverty is defined as the lack of sufficient resources with which to keep body and soul together. IN the US this is around 14% or 44million people. The 14% figure you give for the UK is relative poverty (defines income or resources in relation to the average. It is concerned with the absence of the material needs to participate fully in accepted daily life.) UK absolute poverty is around 9% on average.

And our median income is actually higher than that of the UK also. The latest research I've been able to find on absolute poverty shows that the UK is at 13.1% for 2009-2010. No newer research is available yet. The latest I could find for the US is a NY times article from 2008. At the time, AP for the US was at 8.7%. UK at 12.4%.

Granted, the USA has is "richer" overall, but this only furthers my point. IMagine if the USA had same income level as UK, how many more people would be in poverty then?

no, there are many different ways of calculating averages and yes the median is one, but generally if you say the average you are talking about the arithmetic mean, so if you're going to use the median then state it rather than the general term "average". Yes the super rich live in america, that's what drags your ARITHMETIC MEAN income up, your median income is not much higher than our own, but don't forget it'snot all about income, for example health care and standard of living.

On the topic, the poverty rates tend to differ by a few percentage points at best. So If you're trying to argue that poverty rates in the US are "epidemic" compared to those of the UK or the whole of Europe for that matter, you're on a slippery slope. @fiveoscar it is vary hard to get decent poverty figures but it was a general calculation from various bits of data. your data was from the cia factbook which gave figures from 2004 and 2006, since then the USA had a right wing government supporting the rich to the detriment to the poor whilst we had a left-ish government which had a strong poverty reduction scheme. also take into account the UK has welfare support, free (quality) education and a free health service, none of which the USA has.
