Bruckner takes us on an epic journey....passion, ecstacy, depths of despair but then renewal hope and salavation and always back to his 'liebes Gott' is a uniqe oddessy but wow amazing...RIP Wand for realising it here
"At about 3.20. What's going there?..." Up to that point Bruckner has been showing us the main theme - the "TUM TUM ... tum-ti tum tum" - from every different possible angle. At that point, he says, "Ok, let's stop playing with it: here it is, square on, full orchestra" - and the shock of it blows your brain out through the back of your head. If you think that's good, you should hear the 70 minutes that comes before it! - it all gets resolved in this last couple of minutes. Bruckner = genius!
At about 3.20. Whats going there? I know nothing about composition, but my vision goes blurred, my whole body tingles, i can't breath, i feel like i'm glimpsing god, but I don't understand it.
Amazing. Nobody conducted Bruckner like Wand. I heard him conduct this at the Proms in 1987. Just as the symphony ended (and the audience went crazy!) several St John's Ambulance crew were seen making their way through the audience. Within a few minutes it was being said that two people had collapsed, within seconds of each other, during the last orchestral onslaught.
Strefanash-I just think at the end of the fifth, for once Bruckner lets himself go. No restrains. The end of the eighth where the main themes are interwoven in a fugue is one of the greatest achievements in the whole history of the symphony. I just feel that in the fifth he just lets it all hung out with abandon, and for me with no musical education, I am left in exultation.
Although the list of Bruckner works may be the shortest among the greatest composers, their world is so vast, and his mansion has so many rooms, that anyone find always the ideal for him. This simphony has not been one of my Bruckner favorites, perhaps until now: Cramnella comments may be perfectly wright: what I saw like a few nature or few pathos, few tragedy or few despair -8 & 9 are here the top-, is possibly the impassibility of God, here more aristotelic than passionate Jehova.
This is the Bruckner symphony that picks me up and enables me to go on when I lack energy or when I feel tired with events or life as a whole... I am not a musician nor a musicologist. But, without the shadow of a doubt, the Fith conducted by Bruckner seems to to me as the clearest, most lisible version I have come across! And I've listened to quite a few. A sublime rendering of a monumental masterpiece !
I think the main characteristic in Bruckner's later music (as opposed to Symphonies 1 through 4) is the quest for Elevation in a world strewned with reasons for doubt. Bruckner was doubtless a "religeous" man but what sets him apart is the quest for Enlightenment.. That is foremost in the Adagio form the 5, the 8 and possibly the 9. The fourth movement from the 5 appears to me as the affirmation of oneself through faith in God. In that I agree with Cramnella.
I saw Mr. Wand at the Proms in 1994 on the Thursday night before the Last Night of the Proms. He conducted Bruckner's 8th. Many of the promenaders thought that it was the greatest performance they had ever seen. All held Mr. Wand in the highest esteem. He hardly moves, put his power over the orchestra and the music is immense.
@swanningaround I played in a Bruckner 8 at the Proms with Wand and the BBCSO. I thought it was in the 80s though. An absolutely awesome performance. An extraordinary, inspiring and wonderful person to work with.
did you know that Mr. Wand (1912-2002) along with two other great conductors, namely Mr. Horst Stein (1928-2008) and Hans Knappertsbusch (1888-1965) come from the same quarter of the same town in the Bergisches Land, Wuppertal-Elberfeld ? coincidence ?
vielen dank! bruckner is my fav!! luv the polyphony and counterpoint of the mighty 5th! and thanx to all of you for diggin Bruckner too! how old is gunter here? wow!
The ending of this symphony is one of the most moving of any piece I know and Guenter Wand did it better than anybody. He makes it sound like an organ.
Maybe it is the best Perfomance of this Symphony. Maestro Wand was a like GOD for
Bruckner Perfomances, he knew exactly, what he wanted. NDR SinfonieOrchestra is also for
my personal opinion something very special for Bruckner. It is always big Pleasure und Joy
to play there. This Year they play some Symphonys for 100 Birthday of Maestro Wand. I am
going to be there to play Bruckner 5 with also Great Conductor Herbert Blomstedt.

The relationship of Wand with the orchestra - and vice-versa- is beautiful. As the music is. Great group, collective intelligence.

To experience this Coda with the whole brass section is just incredible.

Fantastic. It's great to see the late Wand at the top of his game, with the orchestra that he personally forged a strong bond with.
