You guys are on hear ripping this guy after I just watched some moron play 3 hi hats (horribly and whats the fucking point) and get compliments out the wazoo, all the wrong people seem to get the credit on this site, great job buddy!
You're joking right? The same as playing snare? That's like saying playing trumpet and tuba are the same because you blow in both of them. Yes, there are skills that transfer over, however the ability to open and close the hats with speed that can't be matched by turning on and off snares gives it an entirely different set of sound capabilities, and the knowledge of how to employ them effectively takes study and practice that go to different areas than snare drumming. It's not necessarily harder
you are makin' a very ironic comparation,I WANT HIM TO PLAY A DRUMSET...
well I said "the same as playin' a snare" bcoz' the skill are the same, mmm?
tuba an treumpet??
we're talkin' bout' percusion,I'd be very impressed if he had played a Conga,a marimba or a taiko drum, where da skills are very different, dont come to me tellin' me bullshit please...
Make an honest effort to argue what you're sayin'...
@hybridassassin1991 Tuba and trumpet are the same fingerings in different octaves. The difference between playing hi-hat and snare is pretty much the same.
I promise he's proffesional in marimba and conga and djembe and all that stuff plus some, and I think the only difference really in playing a hi hat and a snare is the rebound and the fact that you can open it. but I mean you're only saying that he's not making a good argument because you don't understand what he's saying. do you need him to use smaller words?
and it's not necessarily easier either, however that's an ignorant statement to make by just putting a blanket statement over something that has obviously merited enough study that there are entire routines based off just the hi hat.

Yeah. he should just stick with snare drum. Hopefully he never moves towards an actual drum set. That would be the worst. Excellent snare playing though - one of the best in history.
He is one of the greatest drummers of all time. He also is obviously just practicing because if he was trying it would be much more groovy and more stick tricks involved. Don't make fun of him because you probably are terrible compared and just want to sound cool. Also, not the clapping hands in the background.
Lulz... who is Jeff Queen... I don't know, do you have a Tony Award at your house? Yeah, he might be a bit past his prime (though he looks great compared to Nick Angeles, who looks like he's ready to fall apart), but I'm betting he still has the chops to school pretty much everyone making fun of him in this comment list, myself included. And as to the dumb bleachers comments, this looks like one of many clinics going on, and they usually only seat people in front of the performer at those. :)
I wish that made sense in some way... because I can't tell if you're trying to argue with me... or not....
Yes, Jeff Queen has an enormous history of excellence in DCI, including a couple back to back I&E Championships, and some PASIC ones as well. However, he can do a hell of a lot more than that.
You guys wouldnt be saying that if you knew who Jeff Queen was, and if you knew any history you would know that many drummers like Max Roach, Papa Jo Jones, and Elvin did a ton of solo's just on the hi-hat
i recently attended a jeff queen clinic and before playing this he said he just ripped this off from steve smith but improvised on it alot so its not like hes claiming it as his, he admits it
Well, most percussionists feel the same, and that's that every instrument should take years and years to master, and that you sometimes have to master each instrument separately. For example, the quad section leader at my school did a piece called Cymbalectomy and played the High-Hat. It wasn't perfect, I'll say that. It ended up being his usual excellent playing, but the point is, it took more work than you'd think to get a piece of metal to sound good, like a drum would.
Probably never, but perhaps when you have a solo in a song on your drumset, you can play more interesting stuff... Maybe. It all depends on the player and how well that person knows the instrument(s) they play. (shrug) It may be a little trite, but I think it's just as valuable as any drum solo would be.
I like your view on it. And I agree with you; but for it to be valuable, you have to practice valuable material. he's playing no differently from a marching snare. there're some drummers who shred the hihat, Gerald Heyward for example. This though, is far from shredding a hihat.
This is true. Oh well. Marching snare king... Heh, I'd love to be known as the "High-Hat King" haha. I'm glad to see someone who can voice their opinion, even though it's different like a civilised person. Grats
