@oliveranthonyrowland Alain Vanzo was born in 1928, so he sang this part in Philadelphia at the age of 57. Mr. Vanzo had his great years from the late 50's to the mid 70's, and he sang Werther, Faust but also Edgardo beautifully.
Not sure about "modern", he was the same generation as Kraus, but I agree a similar kind of light, elegant voice and I like them both. More like a "French Kraus"
Hey it went Ok! I good some good feedback but as I knew it would be I sang it way too heavily. The day before I had a massive change in my voice because I had next to no sleep and all of a sudden all the lyric touches I had tried to put in turned into a helden style blast! Still considering how badly I was doing the day before Im very happy with how well I sang and I cant complain, Still, if I had known what was going to happen, I would have sang "In Fernem Land" Salut! is more lovely though
Ive got an audition tomorrow and Im using this aria! I hope it goes well, Ive been using this performance as a model, in a couple of places Ive made different decisions but on the whole I have a lot to thank Vanzo for, especially the bloody french! Beautiful singing language but almost impossible to figure out!
Superb, what an outstanding artist and to sing this beautifully at 57 shows the rightness of his technique. thank you for this beautiful rendition of this fine, elegant aria.
Super Class!!!!!!!! How can say any bad about maestro Alain Vanzo? sorry but NOBODY!!!! here in this interpretation he show that with more than 50 years old is a great master tenor, Bravo maestro Alain Vanzo, I think you are amazing artist, and that will be difficult to hear never more again on live in another singer this kind of singing.
The intonation in this video is not what one would expect of an artist of Vanzo's stature. Nor is the legato line so fine.A number of final e mutes are stressed accidentally. Perhaps he was indisposed? The diminuendo of the C5 is wonderful.
His interpretation is more internalized than most and this, along with his splendid singing is what provides the fascination and excitement. Vanzo's Faust was always a very private person with deep feelings. Thanks to the 'fond de loge' and/or student tickets, I was lucky enough to see most of his performances of Faust at the Palais Garnier in the mid to late 1970's (with Valerie Masterson as Marguerite). Unforgettable and cherished memories. One of the great French tenors.
@vanzofaust I heard Alain Vanzo in Faust as my first ever opera at the Opera Garnier - I have to say I didn't really take in the opera (I was quite young at the time) He drove my parents and me back to our hotel afterwards.
Absolutely. The ne plus ultra of French lyric tenors pretty much covers it. Limpid and lyric, his Nadir, and Gerald in Lakme, stand out. His recording of Mireille (Gounod) as well. I do have a recital disc of his with other stuff on it, including a lovely lullaby (Fa la nanna bambino). Actually I don't think this recording (Faust) totally shows him off at his best simply because there have been so many terrific versions of this over the years. Great, though.
Vanzo (1928-2002) was the ne plus ultra of lyric tenors in his generation, especially but not exclusively for French repertory. He made few recordings.This cut displays one of his legendary skills: note the amazingly effective dynamic range with which he inflects the words he is singing.
Good and wonderful voice, I thouhgt I knew the mst important voices but, hey, I missed this one out, will researh on his name, anyone know more about him?

That doesn't matter. I only really discovered him quite recently too. And the staging looks modern.

on the "O marguerite..." phrase the viola (as written in my score) is pronounced voi-si, I dont know anything really about french and im wondering if
a) he sings it wrong or "differently"
b) in french that word is written viola and pronounced voisi or some wierd grammatical rule is in play or whatever
c) or my score is wrong (which I will accept, as many do have errors)

@Darean51
Don't worry about Alain Vanzo's French. Trust me, it's just fine.... and a lesson in French: voici and voilà are two different words.........
vanzofaust 1 year ago
@vanzofaust
so its probably a fault in my score then, I should pronounce it as he says it voi-SI. ok then thanks

What a control of "fraseggio"
