Music is just organised noise. And noise is poison to the mind. Please poison me some more. I have the 12" of this, and yet again, nobody seems to have heard of it. I think that the word 'Genius' does not do Holger Hiller justice. This track was so far ahead of it's time, there is a distinct possibility that nobody will catch it up. Kudos!
Did that guy @ the end really say " A gentle nobbing." ?
Cuz th's what it sounds like, but perhaps I've got a dirty mind/nasty subconscious/ and/or "euphemism insertion failure." Which could explain it away..... but if it waliks like a duck etc.etc.etc. I am the king of Siam. etc.etc.etc.
So many etc.'s I guess it's just that sort of day.
@JeffGuidry good analysis....Palais Schaumburg seems to have been a laboratory for interesting people: FM Einheit (Neubauten), Holger Hiller, Moritz von Oswald....
@glomag Oh yes. Bang on target with that. Poor Walter, he really was ahead of his time and that angel of history, well they cut him no slack. Which is sad.
@stereoloov Holger had an Emulator. He got a bank loan to buy it and rented it out with his self as programmer at very reasonable rates. But this was I believe although I could be wrong, done on the video tape using SMPTE code to synch it not MIDI.
As I said I may be wrong but that's what I heard at the time.
@stereoloov If you are interested there's an interview with Hollger on Momus's site. Imomus I think, not his Mrs Tsk tumbler page. It was put up a few weeks back I believe. He talks about buying his emulator when they were VERY expensive, but he says they had got cheaper.
I'm very glad someone has posted this, one of my fave tracks back in the 80s. This was so innovative for it's time, predating even Coldcut's use of video-as-sound-source
Fuck! They used to play this on MTV's Chill Out Zone... one of the best music TV programs ever produced. Come on! even the original tune was Aphex Twin. I also heard there Einsturzende Neubauten, Momus... and the usual suspects Aphex Twin, The Orb, Autechre and Sun Electric.
WAAAY ahead of it's time. I was lucky enough to hear about this when it came out. It was featured on an alternative music show on studio Brussels called Domino. The presenter was Luc Janssen and to this day he's called the godfather of new music.
A masterpiece... Everything Holger Hiller is simply a must. This is work of art in motion, imagine it a living painting - too modern even for modern museums. Duchamp would have been proud of these two : )
karl bonnie from renegade soundwave and holger hiller with editing on the video by akiko hada. i have the cdv but no way of watching it. :( . this is taken from 'night network' on itv from 1989 i think, it's the video review section - reviewers being for this one samantha fox and mark shaw from then jericho. the beeps were the reviewers when they'd had enough.
One of my all time favourite videos! Caught it on tape from some old Russian TV show which just happened to reach abroad, and for some ten frustrating years didn't even know whose video it is...
For the record, though, the name of the "band" is Ohi-Ho Bang Bang, which Hiller formed with Akiko Hada in 1988. I think they only made this one video single - which obviously is a crying shame.
I wish I could download the 12" somewhere but no luck

No - it's not YELLO. But they copied a lot from HILLERS masterpiece. he was, as usual, far ahead of his time.
