  • This was horrifying.

  • and sometimes when ur going 170 mph ur car will slip

  • @1IIIIIIIIII1 dumb ass he couldnt control the car obviously

  • You would think they'd realize they should probably close that before it happened again with Mike Harmon 2 years later...man NASCAR was PAINFULLY slow with safety improvements. Major contrast to today's NASCAR, but they're only so proactive today because they lost Dale Earnhardt.

  • @484berkshire Two years later?

  • @gobackto82 Oops...that happened in '02. For some reason I thought this was in '92...my mistake...

  • @484berkshire Haha, it's cool. Mistakes happen.

  • HOW FUCKIN STUPID TO HAVE AN OPEN SPOT IN THE WALL??

  • @hamlinfanVA Burton Smith did not own the track then....

  • watch it with captions on

  • My Father showed me this after a bad crash on Sunday.

  • @WarpPal Dale died at full speed into a wall you notice dale only wore open face helmets and most likely he hit his face head on to the steering wheel. with the inpact of two cars. micheal hit harder but had a full faced helmet.

  • @NascarTheGame2012 yeah, the reason dale died is because of his open faced helmet.. He didn't wear a hans device, and when he hit the wall, his head hit the wheel that hard that his brain was pretty much scrambled eggs..

  • @NascarTheGame2012

This is true. If you can find it, I believe it's still out there on the web, the official NASCAR report on Dale's death had a lot of pics of the inside of the car. In one you can see the wheel bent and what look like teeth marks in the wheel padding.

  • HOLY S***

  • @WarpPal dale was not the "safest" driver he didnt wear all the safety equipent possible (other drivers didnt either) he called the hans device a damn noose and he most likely loosened his belt so it would fit like he wanted so his seatbelt broke on impact. also he hit the wall at a very ankward angle that broke many of his ribs and fractured the base of his skull an injury that many drivers like ayrton senna, jd mcduffie and ronald ratzenberger die from

  • @Mikeskates97 It's Roland Ratzenberger.

  • @anglim45 yeah just a typo sry

  • @Mikeskates97 Yep, a basilar skull fracture, though wasn't Senna's death caused by the suspension piece moreso than the impact itself? If I'm right, Gerhard Berger hit a similar spot not long before Senna and walked away.

  • @DJprofessork72 yeah a piece of the suspension did hit and strike him in the helmet causing blunt force trauma and skull fractures along the base of his skull however i"m not familiar with what happened to gerhard berger

  • @Mikeskates97 Pretty much nothing happened to Berger. Still in Tambruello but just hit a little more flush on the side.

  • Grond prix?l0l

  • @WarpPal Because in this crash, the car absorbed the energy - hence it's destruction. In Earnhardts crash, the energy was absorbed, sadly, by the base of his skull.

  • @WarpPal dale earnhardt's crash was just a minor lick.. its because he wasnt wearing his seatbelt properly (if he was even really wearing it at all).. but when you hit a wall going 185+ mph without wearing a seatbelt or wearing it improperly.. youre gonna die

  • @WarpPal You actually make a really good point but Dale Sr. wasn't one for safety, and sadly he was fatally killed in that crash back at daytona. However, the speeds were MUCH slower at Bristol and Sr. hit the wall in the perfect place sadly that he was killed in that crash.

  • ahhhh he might as well have never been a nascar driver this is what he was famous for

  • @csmall1221 Pretty much. I can't think of another driver that been in more wrecks than him. I mean, A LOT!

  • @jonesy97 ikr its crazy lol his brother was alright though

  • @jonesy97 Jimmy Spencer aka Mr. excitement

  • 27 peple must need glasses cuz they hit the dislike button

  • Why do they call him michael walltrip? because he allways takes a 1 way trip to the wall

  • The lucky bugger!

  • This was my first Nascar race growing up, grew up 30 min from the track, and still have the newspaper clippings from then. Don't remember this as I was only 5 but wow.

  • I don't know how you can even get into another race car after a crash like that.

  • Michael has an uncanny way of putting the wall in Waltrip. At least they didn't have to go through the trouble of cutting off the roof.

  • eye kan spiel chust find eye chust kant tipe

  • @gp75motorsports @gp75motorsports Calm down, this is Youtube, not an essay for a high-end university. Forgive the man if he wrote his comment as quickly without proofreading it and a made a few mistakes. The only person making a fool of themself is you for being a grammar nazi.

  • @Im18nowletmewatch I don't know, but I wouldn't want people seeing me make a screw-up on YouTube.

  • @Im18nowletmewatch, dude stop trolling this had nothing to do with you (or me) and you are calling someone out for no reason no one cares.

  • @Im18nowletmewatch Damn, and I was gonna use this for my thesis.

  • Look at the guy on the right at :45 seconds

  • Mike Harmon had almost the exact same sort of crash here. I think it was the exact same spot and reason too.

  • Kool-Aid guy aint saying "oh yeah" now is he?

  • so glad that wasnt on the driver side

  • "Somewhere, in the debris and the rubble, shits Michael Waltrip."

ANYONE would shit their pants twice if they went through that.

  • Very lucky guy..Micheal waltrip is a great guy but he won't be his brother

  • PRAISE THE LORD!!!

  • @switchhitter08 hes the only one you can give credit to for that one

  • 1:09...the car just "discindergraded" lol

  • @surfgreatwaves his brother just nearly died, i think he can be excused

  • WHHAT

  • WTF. HE WALKS PAST THE AMBULANCE.

  • @nitroboy1212 Wasn't Michael lol. You can tell by the colors of the suit.

  • 26 relatives did not like him

  • Kool-Aid man tried bursting through the wall again, but failed

  • @DunnybrusherPartTwo bahahahaha

  • @DunnybrusherPartTwo I agree. He never will try that again.

  • One of the worst Nascar accidents I ever saw.

  • chinese rol cage? in 1990? amazing

  • Michael is so damn big it makes it even more amazing that he can come through a ridiculous crash like this almost unscathed.

  • This wreck caused michael waltrip to get a disease like tourettes where he can't help but to spit out a sponsor name every 4 words...

  • @RacingsTruth

    hahahahaha!!!!!!!

  • @RacingsTruth Damn, you said it! Even on that show he hosts with Schrader! Just can't stop the plugs comming.

  • @RacingsTruth It's called "NASCARitis".

  • You guys saying things about dale sr. You forgot few thing. Dale sr used shock spring under his seat so his seat wasn't that bolted tighten up good alike other drivers. Nascar told him to changed that but you know dale sr won't. He like his seat the way he have it. And also he were using old way seat belts. They had better thick seat belts. Dale sr choose not use that. Dale sr race his way with loosen seat belts so he could move around lil bit. That's what he likes.

  • @MrZrazies Dale Sr dead.

  • @tryithere I know. That's why he got killed. He won't use new HANS devices. If he do then he would be still alive probby.

  • @MrZrazies And/or a full face helmet.

  • @MrZrazies You're forgetting one thing: the HANS device didn't exist in 2001. It came about as a result of Dale Sr.'s death

  • @elhefe001 Oh that's right. I forgot that. Thanks. But they tried to make dale sr to wear better seat belt which is thicker and wider. He won't wear them cuz he prefer old school seat belts. After his death, Nascar force everyone wear it and later came HANS device or they can't race. I think Nascar respect dale sr too much. Now nascar learn their lesson.

  • @MrZrazies They didnt try to get Dale Sr. to wear thicker and wider seatbelts....he wore the same Simpson belts that alot of drivers wore............The only thing they wanted him to change was to wear a full faced helmet instead of an open face helmet.....they never tried to change the seatbelts!

  • @elhefe001 No, it existed since the mid 90's. I believe. The thing is, it was uncomfortable at the time. I wore one as a Junior Drag Racer and it was awful. Now-a-days they're super comfortable. They barely feel like they're there. That's why in 2001 Senior wasn't wearing one.

  • lol this wreck and he survives but earnhardt taps a wall and dies. lol must mean that earnhardt has no balls and smaller dick to match. fuckin pussy. i've been in worse wrecks in my go cart

  • @xKAOTIXx

    go carts are for pussys

Earnhardt is the dest driver Nascar has had.

  • @xKAOTIXx yeah but your little go-cart wasnt going 190mph...................lol

  • mike harmons did the same thing

  • that gate is a fatal area. that happened twice so far. i really hope this gets fixed.

  • L.D. Ottinger at 0:44 similar to the car he drove at the Scotts EZ Seed Shooutout.

  • The " HANS " device was designed by Dr. Robert Hubbard in the early 1980's and a prototype was developed in 1985 and used in crash tests in 1989. It was promoted and manufactured in 1991, but sat on the shelves until 1994. So you see, they've been around for years and were available for the drivers to use although most chose not to use them.

  • Kool Aid Man said..."OH NO"

  • Who would ever build a wall like that? that has to be the most dangerous thing any racetrack could have!

  • How did he do it? I can`t believe after 20 years he didn`t tell how he made it.

  • ALL ya'll need to shut the fuck up.. Dale didnt wear his shit right bc he was an average red-neck that thought he was un-touchable..Nothing failed bu DALE ( RIP ).. Now shut the fuck up

  • @quasiphatpaul and @paintballer5200 he had his belts on and they did not fail, he simply wore them loose because he did not like to be straped so tightly into his car and when he hit the wall his body flew forward and when the loose belts caught his body his head kept moving and snapped his neck.

  • @jeniuzboyy wrong his neck was never broken the impact caused his open faced helmet to slide forward on his head exposing the back of his head and the back of his head the smashed against the seat and thats what killed him

  • Dang, i'm glad that Michael walked away from that crash unharmed

  • dumb rednecks

  • @paparoach189 Dumb punk bitch

  • so, that's what called evolution? survival of the fittest... go on then...

  • I miss Bob Jenkins announcing. When he left, that's around when Nascar started to lose its popularity.

  • check out the graeme obrain crash in the AUSCARS @calder park

  • Pues tampoco es para tanto Los tengo visto bastante más fuertes y con peor resultado (por ejemplo: Ayrton Senna en Imola 94)

  • WOW! That was amazing...amazing that he walked away from that. What year is this video from? Looks like the 80's is it?

  • @spookespook FAIL, it says micheal waltrip crash bristol 1990

  • @braydenwatkins double check your facts. Was on April 7, 1990

  • @g0ing2n0where the person said he thought it looked like it was from the eighties, but it says, Michael Waltrip crash Bristol 1990, i never even meant to say the day or month

  • If you think about Michael and his career, he has had more flips and almost near-death crashes than wins. I don't even know how many times he has flipped anymore.

  • I was there! I was in the grandstands on the front stretch and you could feel it from there. The place was absolutely quiet until he got out and people on the backstretch started cheering.

  • A bit of a liability issue for the track ?

  • @Blink182DudeRanch okay, let's see you drive in NASCAR, just show us how easy it is

  • @RyDogRidesTheBus i didnt say i was better than a nascar driver, i said wrc drivers were. Its not hard to drive round an oval, no matter how fast you're going. the only excuse would be a blow out

  • @Blink182DudeRanch Not when a fucking tire blows or a tie rod breaks!!!

  • wow...

  • His sponsor was kool-aid :D

  • @LOLWUT431 OHHHH YAAAA

  • I can't believe he walked away from that. It is like watching something from a movie....

  • Dale was old school and just had no time for people who had no "guts".

The bad thing about this crash is that it happened more than once before they finally fixed that damn gate for good. Happened to Mike Harmon as well.

  • He has wrong name.. Wall Trip...

  • On a lighter note........

Youtube's new caption facility powered by Google speach recognition

    'The crowd is hushed'

    Google says

    'The quality is flushed'

  • He was coming off a curve at a half mile track. There's no way he was doing any where near 180 mph. Not that he didn't hit hard, just saying 180's impossible on that track. They qualify in the neighborhood of 125.

  • I saw this car last summer. They have it in a museum right outside of Talledega Super Speedway. It is amazing walking around that car and how it came apart like that.

  • kool-aid LOL thats what he drived

  • After every new nascar wreck, Darrell says that its the hardest hit he has ever seen. Since they have gotten the new cars, none of the wrecks have been as hard as this one.

  • Just like Mike Harmon's crash..... Damn, Bristol, keep that gate shut tight!!!

  • Can't believe he survived. Lucky man.

  • this is my freinds cousin he is "iamKetchupguy"

  • One of the O-boys, from my home town. Michael wasn't great by a long shot, but he was--and is--a good driver. The only thing that separates him from a career like Gordon's or Johnson's os a checkbook that looks like Rick Hendrick's.

  • I agree with that to an extent... he did finally get to use toyota's bank account... they have to be pretty deep pockets lol

  • wow thats a wall that mate hats off to the safety systems

  • A horrible driver doesn't when the Daytona 500 twice. Was he great? no. But he was a good, and very talented driver.

  • Think about what you just said. Almost every winner of the Daytona had someone pushing them to the win. HA!!

And in order to have some pushing you to the win, you have to be in 1st place, right? Well an untalented driver wouldn't be in 1st.

And in order to even get a cup ride, you have to rip of the short tracks and any other racing league you were ever in.

Waltrip won 11 races in the Nationwide(BUSCH) series.

He may not be great, but he is very talented.

  • @stoneydude37 how do you "when" a race...... he most be pretty good to "when" a race...... lol

  • @nr2002vidz .......Ok my bad, but I only did that once.

  • The exact same crash as Mike Harmon here. Amazing they didn't learn there lesson with this crash. And the cars almost look exactly the same after the crash.

  • What is the HANS?

  • It stands for Head And Neck-restraint System. Basically it sits on the shoulders and clips to the helmet via elastic straps to dissipate crash energy and protect the neck from damage.

  • He's talking about the HANSolo device.

  • Head And Neck Safety system

  • O.O son of a bitch.........Jesus how did he survive that damn

  • duane you can shut the hell up

  • impact at 23

  • Dale died because he was too "Stubborn" and he did not want to wear the "HANS" device

  • Didn't know HANS was that old ... I can remember it for 5 years or so, in F1.

  • QWERTY, HANS was invented mid 1980's I think, don't know when it came into common use though.

  • wasnt required by drivers until after earnhardt. hans couldve saved adam petty, irwin, dale, eric martin, roper, etc

  • Even Earnhardt's death didn't bring on the required HANS use (although most drivers started using it afterwards anyway). It was actually Blaise Alexander's fatal crash at Charlotte that was the last straw, they made the HANS mandatory after that.

I don't think anything could've saved Eric Martin...when you're already unbuckling your belts and another car hits you in the door at full speed, you're pretty much done.

  • @duane1344 he went head on into an unprotected wall at 180 mph, if he was wearing his hans, he would have be a dead man with a hans....

  • @duane1344 Not to mention he wore the open face helmet, which didn't help in impact...

  • @duane1344

none of them wore hans devices until dales accident.I was under the impression that it was due to seat belt failure.

  • @ward185 yea but he didn't have his seat belt on the right was eather he had it lose cause he could move around the car more so when he hit the walll his head it the wheel and that what cause his death

  • @duane1344 no he said that the hans was not confatble and it was brand new the year he died

  • @duane1344 From what I remember they developed the HANS device because of Dale Earnhardt's death.

  • @ababyduck1337 The Hans Device was around before Earnhardt's death. Kyle Petty was wearing one During the Daytona race when Earnhardt died. Earnhardt' s seatbelt contributed to his death because they were not installed to manufacturer's specs.

  • @ababyduck1337 yea, @mne1205 is right. I can't believe my comment is one of the highest rated lol

  • @ababyduck1337 wikipedia it

  • @duane1344 u r an asshole there was no HANS device until after he was killed he was the one that inspired the HANS device

  • @zeidy388 wikipedia HANS device asshole

  • @duane1344

There was no HANS device back then you dumb ass god your stupid. Dale was the insporation for the HANS you couldent be more wrong...

  • @ecbadboy101 wikipedia HANS device you idiot

  • @duane1344 if you werent soo simple minded you would know that the "HANS" did not come out till dale had died!!! and on the last lap Tony Eury or however u spell it thought the race was over soo dale removed his belts upon crossing the finish line soo when he hit the wall he did not have any belts on soo if he even had the belts he would have been killed!!!!

  • @paintballer5200 Duane you are so wrong the hans device has actullay been around since the mid 80's its current form has been around before Dale died the day Dale died Junior was wearing the Hans device because his Dad made him.

  • @dhill8561 thats what i was saying!

  • @paintballer5200 wtf are you talking about, the HANS was around before Dale Sr's death, wikipedia it god dang

  • @paintballer5200 Wrong about the hans and the belts. His belts failed dude. You need to research some more before you post.

  • @paintballer5200 Okay the HANS was out well before Dale died. Earnhardt Sr. himself referred to the device as "that damn noose", so obviously it was in use in Nascar. Also, you state he removed his belt upon crossing the finish line and then hit the wall. Um....he hit the wall BEFORE the finish line and no nascar driver in his right mind would remove his seat belt before the race was over.

  • @BMPmama698: Not that long before, but it did exist... It was actually mandatory in CART and F1, but it wasn't mandatory in NASCAR until Blaise Alexander died later in 2001...

  • @duane1344 Were there any other drivers wearing the HANS device at that time? I thought it was implemented along with many other safety equipment after his death.
