God, what an incredible talent. No one else ever wrote story songs anywhere near the caliber of his works. THE most under appreciated and under rated singer/song-writer ever.
I miss the days when songs like this, story songs with adult content, could get played on the radio coast to coast. We've lost something in this country...
It's absolutely amazing that he can perform live and hit all the notes just the recorded one. The more I listen to this song, the more I appreciate his talent.
Good news is I have got the Jim Davidson tribute that Jim performed live in 1999. Jim is a big fan of this song and really did it justice. I'll upload it as soon as I can. Looking forward to the comments on it. Daz

Damn, weren't the 70's magical?! And yes, Mr. Chapin was part of it all. Harry, you will never be forgotten, my friend. God bless you and thanks for all of the memories...PJM
@oldsynth same here thats where i first heard this song........was looking for jim davidson singing it but cant find it,if somebody has it please upload it thanks
That's me.. feeling all of 45 going on 15! Is there an artist now who captures feelings as well as this?? Think not. Harry.. you are loved and missed!
First heard Harry in concert as a warmup for the NY City Rock Ensemble. At the end of his set the crowd called for more and got it. NYRE came on and almost everyone left. The mood had been set. 6 months later our college brought just Harry back, what a concert! Talk about the day the music died...........
That said I have to tell you Harry would be all over you guys for slamming Longboard. While I disagree with Longboards opinion, he is entilted to think and even say what he wants without being called a moron or clueless. Why not explain WHY you think the song is powerful rather than attack him for his views. Food for thought...
this is real music, not manufactored artist working for disney claiming to be rock musicians . This song is beautiful yet sad, a lot of easy listening music seems to have a sad tone in them O.o wonderfun song rip harry <3
@lashlaroo - No, he died in his VW bug on the Long Island expresway. Ironically, he was on his way to a meeting with his record execs to tell them he needed to slow down his touring and music writing to spend more time with his family. Sad and tragic.
Very true song for a DJ at that time. I lived it. This is a such a great song. But r Radio is so bad, a old song like this is to long, and FM is not the old FM. The DJs are kids picking the song we should like. FM is not are FM. So Sad!!!
Gotta say, I sat and cried with a(fellow) drunk old hippy named Mark in Thorhild Alberta in about 2000. If Chapin had made it to age of video, he'd out-your-Lennon.
Actually, 2 were his brothers. Tom Chapin, who is now famous for kids/family music often played with him as did his brother Steve. They played guitar and piano
A TRUE GREAT HUMAN BEING. FATHER. ARTISIT! WISH I COULD BE LOOKIN FORWARD TO OLD HARRY COMING TO MY TOWN TO BE PUTTIN ON A SHOW. CLASSIC TUNES THAT WILL AND HAVE STOOD THE TEST OF TIME. HERES TO YOU HARRY! SO LITTLE OF A COMMENT FOR SUCH A TALENT.
nice words kss, ur very lucky, i wasnt even bourn when he was around. ide never heard of him till bout 7 months ago when i heard cats in the cradle, been obsessed ever since and i learned 4 of his songs. ive got all my friends listenig to him too.
I wasn't alive when Harry died. My dad brought me up on good music like Harry Chaplin one of the most under rated singers of his generation. Thanks dad but most importantly Thanks Harry and Rest In Peace. You died too early.
it is true, the version that was played in the uk did not have the very last verse, although i don't know the actual reason why. it was not until i heard the full live version that i heard the last verse...really it provided closure to the story, albeit a sad ending. many of harry's songs didn't have a happy ending though, but isn't life like that, not sugar-coated all the time...Harry is still, in my opinion one of the greatest singer-songwriters ever though...a great loss to humanity...
The song is simple: a young man making it as a DJ on the radio, impressing his family and auditors. However, the music let the place for a sort of sad completion of the story, kind of a death trap (like the sad end) or a danger thrill all song long.
It's astonishing to know that it was a real radio station in the USA back in the 70's and that Harry didn't receive any sort of bad criticism associated to it.
Harry Chapin, in my opinion, is a very underrated singer/songwriter. If anyone who is reading this comment decides to study his music, I believe they will easily form the same opinion as my own...among my favourites are this one, 'they call her easy', 'a better place to be' and sniper. please don't just listen, study the lyrics too...Harry had a lot to say.....
I saw Harry in concert three times, the last the November before we lost him as he was supporting the release of the "Sequel" album. He did "Sniper" once in those three because, as he told the audience, it took too much out of him. He was the best live performance... rather the best visit with a performer that I have experienced. Long before "We Are the World" Harry'd created his World Hunger Year effort. He was a pathfinder for social responsibility among performers.
@kssocref I'm ashamed to say I don't know as much about Mr. Chapin as i should. I grew up listening to his wonderful stories. What exactly was it about "Sniper" that drained him so? I apologize if this is a stupid question, I've never heard the song.
@Gunstar1701 - Sniper was an intense song, where Harry took on the persona of Charles Joseph Whitman, who killed 14 and wounded 32 as a sniper from the Univ. of Texas clock tower in 1966. It was an event that galvanized the country. The song goes 10 minutes, and Harry (as always) poured everything into it. It's a wonder they didn't have to carry him off after he performed it. The song is available on iTunes, but - as with all of Harry's songs - the studio version dims in comparison to live.
I love Harry Chapin's music. Watched him in a concert... he walked out on stage by himself and just sang his stories. It was beautiful. Until today I never heard of Sniper. Powerful. Thanks.
@Gunstar1701 A live version of "Sniper" is available here. Search for Harry Chapin and Sniper and I'm sure you'll find it. Just finished watching it. Watch Harry's reaction at the end and you'll understand why he couldn't do it too often.
@ianmistben -- If you love Harry's poetry, listen to Greyhound. "Stepping off of this dirty bus, first time I understood, it's got to be the going, not the getting there that's good"

@chatman2a Oh how I completely agree with your sentiments. I was only chatting to the wife earlier today and saying that back in the 70's how much more the artists seemed to take pride in their work, how you could actually hear the lyrics that were being sung, there was no nasty edge to the great singer/songwriter of the period. I only ever watch and listen to the music that was around from that particular period as todays stuff is just, well, what you said it was.
man, i went to the concert that harry never got to: eisenhower park, in east meadow, LI. harry had a heart attack and died while driving the LIE on his way to the show... now, here i am, a first baby in the family, and i suddenly find myself singing "circle" to her... i really miss u, harry! i'm gonna take ur music and pass iton to my wife and baby... thanks, harry!
Saw Harry twice--once in Poughkeepsie, and once in hartford. He didn't keep a penny of either concert, save for expenses. all the rest went to World Hunger. He is my muse.

Some times I get this crazy dream and I just take off in my car..........But you can travel on some ten thousand miles and still stay where you are.......WOW......What a great line--
This is great! I have been listening to the other online versions for months. This is my favourite. I heard it when in my 20's but remembered the song and came back to look for it now. I am pased 60. Amazing how we recall stuff. It's good Harry's message is being understood over and over, he is understood. When young it was just a pop record. Now I've suffered ups and downs like we all do. I sure hope I can help others a bit more before I die.
geez- i listened to this version again tonight and there is so much hidden stuff that is so quality. the guitar part in the very beginning where he is tapping the strings. all the strange bass vocals throughout the song. what a tight band and a very cool and strange song.
the electric guitar player is his brother, Steve Chapin. Both Harry's brothers Tom and Steve were musicians and played with him on many occasions. Harry's father , Jim Chapin , was and is a drummer, still alive at 90 and still playing and teaching although he was pretty much an absentee father as the drummer's life took him on the road. If you wanna see what Harry would have looked like as an old man. Google Jim Chapin and go to his website.
thanks for the update funorbfrank. For those who don't know what he is talking about . Apparently Harry's father, Jim Chapin died about a month ago. He was an outstanding drummer in his own right.
Fantastic video! Thanx from heart. I grew up in poor White family of 15 & only concert I ever went to was Harry Chapin 1973. He put so much 'feeling' into his 'stories,' that with binoculars one could see his forehead straining, his lips pulsating-eyes looking 'inward,' towards soul of America not at audience. Sounds strange, but he even seemed to sing from his teeth to get his story across. Having suffered from White starvation in South Chicago, I truly understand his work toward "World Hunger"
I saw Harry at the Mid Hudson Vallery Winery... In NY just a day or 2 before he passed away. The best part I remember is yellying to .....Harry This is Harry ...play wold hahaha.. I remember his word's I''ll get to it harry .What a cool dude with a great outlook on life.. RIP Harry .

I sure hope I can help others a bit more before I die.

geez- i listened to this version again tonight and there is so much hidden stuff that is so quality. the guitar part in the very beginning where he is tapping the strings. all the strange bass vocals throughout the song. what a tight band and a very cool and strange song.

that hook is keiller and that electric guitar player is great- anyone know who he is????
ztubs6 2 years ago
the electric guitar player is his brother, Steve Chapin.

You kind of get the idea the creators of WKRP in Cincinnati based the character of Dr. Johnny Fever on this song.
