I'm a gay man out at work who has worked with & made friends with many Muslim people over the years, not one of whom ever had any problem with me being gay, none of whom saw women as inferior, many of whom had dogs for pets. They were very friendly to me as an out gay man. Two Christian co-workers used to be friendly with me but now avoid me like the plague after learning I'm gay. I've only been harassed for being gay by Christians and never by those of any other religion, including Muslims.
There is a lot of ignorance about Muslims in N. America. Most don't realize that Islam has many different sects just like Christianity and Judaism or that they all 3 religions worship the exact same god but in different ways. Many seem to think that news about wars/terrorism in middle east tells them something about Muslims in N. America. Muslims immigrated here to leave that behind. I'd encourage people to get to know a variety of Muslims to see how they're essentially the same as anyone else.
Its not just the Muslim community centre open to all like the YMCA , 2 blocks from ground zero being opposed in spite of a majority of Manhattanites where ground zero is, supporting this Muslim community centre, its many new and existing mosques being opposed all over the US far from NYC. Whatever happened to religious freedom in the US? Blaming all Muslims for the 9/11 terrorists is like blaming all Christians for the mass murder/terrorist attack against liberal youth in Norway by a Christian.
In my opinion people should be upset that in spite of people from every religion being killed in the 9/11 attacks & that people from every religion helped in the rescue efforts the only religion being represented in the WTC 9/11 memorial is Christianity & that just because clean up crews found a T shaped girder section. Its illegal for US gov't to promote any religion over others yet its doing so with the WTC 9/11 memorial, either all religions should be represented or none, I'd prefer none.

On Sunday October 31st, 120 innocent children and people went to a Sunday morning mass at Our Lady of Salvation Church in Baghdad. On that day 50 died and 70 injured because of some terrorists. Look at American political history - using fake attacks or self inflicted wounds to create excuses for wars. Scare people into believing there's something worth attacking and then you get their support; Vietnam is a great example of this. America benefited a GREAT amount from the 9/11 attacks, as did oil companies and security companies.
