Your other critisisms of Dead Space were extremely minute. I understand you feel differently about them, but your wording doesn't accurately portray your feelings. It's very easy to see that. Im not trying to sound like an arrogant nitpicker, but I stand by what I said.
I remember the combat in Settlers being really easy; just hit the enemy territories in the middle and he'll never be able to recover because all his important buildings are gone.
@antisocialfatman It seems like you are. I'l never forget how you left off Mirror's Edge so lightly. You had a good deal of critisism for it in your review.
@gilgamesh310 I didn't 'let it off lightly'. I think it's a great game. That's not my standards changing, that's me having a different opinion to you.
@antisocialfatman No it isn't. You spend 1 minute and 30 seconds critisising it's story. Then you spend about ther two minutes critisising other elements of the game. That's 3 and a half minutes out of 10 minutes. That's a third of the review focused on critisisms.
You critisised Dead Space 2 for being weak on story for proportionally the same period of time. Your other elements of critisism were also for proportianally the same period of time. So you are holding double standards.
@laifalbert In this specific case, they aren't. they are pretty much the same. He gave Mirros's Edge a 5/5 and Dead Space 2 a 4/5. The critisisms are almost identical.
@gilgamesh310 The genre's are entirely different though. Mirror's Edge is a first person platformer (rhythm-ish?) game, while Dead Space is a third person shooter. Certain problems in one genre may be worse than those in another.
@gilgamesh310 Another malformed argument, gilgamesh. I spend very little time criticising Mirror's Edge's story. I acknowledge that it's not especially good, but I'm overall positive about it. The other issues I raise are pointed out to be not serious problems despite being worthy of recognition.
As for DS2, DS is an established, story-driven IP. Mirror's Edge is a new IP. It makes perfect sense to judge the stories differently -- and story was not my only criticism of DS2.
i think it would be a bit awful if the combat wasn't like that because it seems like everything is on those little paths so it would be bad if the combat wasn't and was more like age of empires 2 combat .Great Review though
Settlers 2 = Best of the series! 3 and 4 (which are virtually identical, in terms of mechanics) were pretty good too, but doing away with the roadbuilding also did away with lots of the complexity, imho.
5 (the first part of the series in 3D) was rubbish and bore almost no resemblance to the earlier parts. I haven't played any of the sequels since, though I've heard that 7 (came out last year) is ok.
have you ever heard of Anno 1404 or Dawn of Discovery? They are the same game, and it is fantastic its very similar to settlers, but much more focused on city building and resorce management.
@DragonMagi I am familiar with it, yeah. I was looking for a new city builder and one of the Anno games was top of my list before I just decided to replay Settlers 2.
@antisocialfatman You'll find Anno five times more complicated than this. To produce a resource you sometimes have to construct six buildings to do it, half of which are located on other islands so you'll have to set up trade lines to do bring it to one spot. And it's not a resource you don't have to produce: It's vital if you want your settlements to thrive.
I once sat for 7 continuous hours playing it. Time has no meaning when that game is on.
@YoZ456 Have you played Settlers 2? I'm sure Anno 1404 is more complex, but many Settlers 2 resources take a whole bunch of buildings. Five times more complicated? If that's not hyperbole, that sounds needlessly complex, and bad.
@antisocialfatman C'mon! Why do you have to take everything I say so literally!? It's certainly not five times more complicated and I think there's no way for anyone to calculate exactly how more complicated it is compared to this game. However, it does require a lot more dedication and micromanagement compared to this. I think Anno is The Settlers' father (so to speak). I'm sure you'll enjoy it. So get off of your antisocialfatass and get it!
@MarkArandjus: Cultures is pretty much a Settlers ripoff, actually (and was, like Settlers, made by a german developer - those type of games are really huge here in Germany). I never played it, but I heard it's not as good as the "original". So yeah, you should definitely go and play Settlers 2 :-D
found your voice a little abrasive at first tbh but I'm glad I stuck with it. great review.

SO NOSTALGIC! I spent a large amount of my childhood playing Settlers III and IV among other city building games, thanks for the great review. :D

@gilgamesh310 You think they're minute, but I don't. They were important to me. Important enough for me to give it a 4 over a 5.

Ive noticed, you are tightening the criteria necessary for you to give a game an Excellent. That's good I suppose.
