Expensive demonstration but I'm sure he knows what he is doing far more than I do.
Myself I have used logs but with a blunt sword.I do that to save my sharp sword from being blunted and me spending hours resharpening it!Guess I'm lazy as much as anything.
But second because wood can get a vice like grip on even a Axe and wrenching or twisting could bend or break an expensive weapon.
I have tremendous respect for this group their discipline an dedication does show through on their postings.
Please note the black pants and red shirt. That is the uniform of ARMA members. He isn't a random idiot in his backyard making a Youtube video and 'failing' at it. He knows what he's doing, expects this result (look at the gloves!) and is proving a point.
@NikovK John did not "expect" this result. Please... Note the expletive "F*ck" at 9 seconds and the way he (quite understandably) fliches away from the cut when he realises the sword broke.
He wasn't trying to proove that swords were brittle, he was trying to proove the quality of that certain sword manufacturer; which evidently, sucked. I know this because I have seen many longswords cut straight though bamboo with one swing before, and they weren't movies ;)
This guy is a renowned master with decades of experience. He's demonstrating a point. Swords are brittle weapons that need care and are not made for crude bashing against hard surfaces.
@radopunk The point is, he's proving exactly that, not trying to chop trees. Swords are not indestructible weapons that some believe can cut through steel armor like butter.
@lockbreak12 He did say that, yes. I believe he said that to be a master you need to have to kill and survive by your skills. Well, let's just say, compared to the most of modern practitioners he is indeed a master.
@Ranziel1 John had no idea the sword would break. He was (somewhat recklessly) hacking away at green bamboo with a Del Tin. He did not realise the sword would break (see his expletive at 9 seconds). I've been in HEMA long enough to remember the original video and posts about this - there was no 'point' intended - this was an accident, not a demonstration of any point.
I like how he runs back over and starts at it again. :)

@Ranziel1 Ok...to me he looked like a teenie trying to do what he has seen in a movie. He should take an axe for tree cutting, not a sword.

@Ranziel1 you do make a fairly compelling point

@Ranziel1 Clements is overhyped and not a renowned master.

He is considered a modern master by many people. If anything the knowledge he possesses on these subjects is astounding.

Weak buddy, weak. Definately not what swords are made for. You want a sharp steel club, pick up a Darksword for half the price of a Del Tin.
